Wonderful graphic novel that I think is a good read for a middle aged audience trying to figure out were they belong and how to “fit in“
Graphica. Published in 2019. This book tackles what is like to be the new and how nerve-wracking that can be. The main character is convinced to join the soccer team but she had never played before. She one of the lower teams that specializes in drama more than soccer but in the end they all become friends. This book gives us a picture of what it can be like trying something new and they good things that come from doing so.
Catching up on some recently challenged books. I was not impressed with this one about middle school misfits on a losing soccer team and the friendships that form during the season. I thought it was choppy and skims the surface on many topics without enough detail or emotion.
This middle-grade graphic novel centers on Faith joining the school soccer team and realizing the friendships are worth more than the games. It's a slice of life on middle-school anxieties of friendship/family tensions & romantic inclinations and represents a diverse cast of ethnicities, body types, and sexual orientations, but there are too many characters for the book to feel cohesive.

i read this almost a week ago but kept forgetting to write a review. this was a great book! this was an entertaining short read with an interesting storyline and intriguing characters. this is a great book for graphic novel lovers who want a fast and easy read!
My niece told me to read this and so I did. It is a cute graphic novel that delves into the lives of a bunch of people playing in a soccer league. There are diverse characters - including trans and queer kids - and lovely themes of friendship. I would have read a separate book on each kid - it felt like it jumped around a bit more than I would have liked. I did quite enjoy it! #middlereaders #queerbooks #transbooks
Multiple representations of how girls can girl. Realistic depiction of middle school experiences. Spoiler critique in comments. Not read for #24in48. Just catching up on posts.
Super cute & diverse middle-grade graphic novel about a bunch of kids who are on a soccer team & aren‘t good at it at all. They‘re good are being a pretty accepting group of friends, though. Cute art that will appeal to readers of Raina Telgemeir. Critique -there are too many characters whose story we follow. I think it would have been better to make this a series - focus on one character in each book. None of them get the attention they deserve.
Johnson‘s latest comic with First Second is a cute and silly comic focusing on a team of elementary school girls each struggling with their own growing pains and slowly becoming friends.
I‘m very interested in reading more by Johnson and can easily recommend this book to kids and adults.
I loved the representation in this book. Their are tomboys and preppy girls, punks and studious kids. Everyone has a distinct personality and get a bit of backstory to give them depth. The different interactions are super cute. Bonus, if you‘re looking for positive LGBTQ+ rep, this book has it.
I really love the sketchy look to the illustrations in The Breakaways. It gives the girls energy and personality in every panel. Kevin Czap‘s colours pairs wonderfully with Johnson‘s work.
I‘m working on a big book order for work at the library, so I‘m falling into the rabbit hole of upcoming books. Unfortunately, it means I‘m losing interest in all the books I have already and only want to think about what‘s new! Here‘s hoping I don‘t go too deep on #Netgalley— I‘ve been really good about pacing myself so far, but the temptation is getting strong... 😬 #kidlit #sendhelp
