The sequel to Unmasked By The Marquess. This volume of the Regency Imposters trilogy tells the story of Verity, a bisexual publisher who is trying to get over a break up with a woman and Ash, her friend who is working with her to write and publish a book and who is hiding a secret about his past. Interesting subplots about Verity‘s brother and her looming financial ruin. Two supporting characters from the previous book feature prominently.

An utterly delightful, perfect historical romance. Verity Plum is a radical bookseller whose childhood friend Ash, an engraver, has come to board with her. Their friendship and intellectual connection teeter on the edge of romantic love/lust. But when Ash--who always assumed he was illegitimate--discovers he's the heir to a duke, it drives a wedge between them. Superb writing! Fascinating historical details! Plus, Verity is prominently bisexual!

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian One favourite passage:
"For all she was one of Ash's dearest friends and one of the few constants in his life, for all she and her brother were now the closest thing to family that he had in this country, being near her was a pleasure he meted out for himself in small doses, like the bottle of French brandy he kept in his clothes press, lest he succumb to the emotional equivalent of gout."

You know, ignorant people say romance writers don't write well, but the first page of this book has the delightful and clever phrase "the emotional equivalent of gout." I love it.

llwheeler ❤️ Cat Sebastian's writing! There is a super excellent close reading of this intro too, if that's at all your thing: https://closereadingromance.com/2020/01/29/lest-he-succumb-subjects-and-subjunct... 4y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @llwheeler oh my god I am officially obsessed with that blog now!! Thanks so much for linking it. Very much my thing. I used to love doing close readings in school. 4y
llwheeler No problem! I'm glad your post reminded me of it, it had been quite a while since I'd checked it. I loved doing close readings too. 4y

This book sold me on Cat so hard. Flirting through sedition. Angry cat whisperer. A man fully supporting his love's autonomy. Said man having some sub leanings. Just read this book because it is beautifully written. Okay? #romantsy

quote
charl08

“Dear Miss Plum, I have these five years been married to a man most would account a most excellent husband. .... However...he has become a proponent of free love...”

Verity wrote a four-page tirade on the merits of spinsterhood, the urgent need to reform divorce law, and the benefits that would devolve to all by banning men from the public sphere.

She feared this would not be a suitable answer ...but she found it moderately cathartic.

Current kindle screen. Recommend me more romances featuring LGTBQI+ characters and POC main characters (both is great but either or will do too!) pretty please!

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian Have you read any Alisha Rai? She's got lots of POC characters, plus a bi main character in 6y
Beachesnbooks Have you read this one yet? 6y
Verity @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I am in an endless hold queue for her at the library. I‘ve heard such good things! 6y
Verity @Beachesnbooks I really want to - but can‘t find it on the library catalogue yet, and I‘m not meant to be buying books atm because we‘re hoping to move house... 6y

I've seen this described as Cat Sebastian's first "traditional" historical, which I think does it a big disservice. Yes it's her first “traditional" m/f but to reduce this book to that is to underplay what Sebastian is trying to do. All I can hope is that that descriptor will tempt readers who haven't yet read Sebastian because they "don't do" lgtbqi+ romances to try Sebastian's work and see what they're missing. Because this is really great.

On the one hand the pacing is kind of weird, but on the other hand the hero sees the heroine wearing a hat and is so shocked by this turn of events that he just mouths "hat" at her, so it's a pick.

khooliha Also, the fact that I lifelong friendship is abandoned for a chunk of this book and I only cried a little bit is proof that I am healing and I will not hear otherwise!! 6y

I would give this 3.5🌟
The pacing is slow and the descriptions of various things a bit too exacting making the book tedious at times, so it took me far longer to finish then the author‘s previous books. I do like the characters and it is a fresh take on the Duke hero trope. FYI, the cover makes no sense for these characters, she would never wear that gown. #romantsy

BookishMarginalia It drives me nuts when the cover illustration is at odds with the book‘s content! #bookishpetpeeve 6y
Nessavamusic Yes! And often the author has no input 6y
llwheeler I did think this cover was not very in keeping with her other books, so glad to know it's not reflective of the characters. I'm still excited for this one, I love her books! 6y

Friends to lovers romance with a wee bit of sedition and Perkin Warbeck slash-fic. What‘s not to love?

If you were hoping for a little Pembroke-and-Robin action, they don‘t appear as characters here, although Mrs Allenby and Amelia appear as wonderful additions to this story. This narrative is almost parallel to that of Unmasked by the Marquess.

(To the cover designer: Verity would NEVER wear that gown.)
