Killing Forest | Sara Blaedel
#1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLERSara Blaedel, author of the #1 international bestseller The Forgotten Girls--which was roundly praised as "gripping" with "uncompromising realism" (Washington Post) and "tautly suspenseful" (BookPage)--returns with the thrilling next book in her series featuring police investigator Louise Rick. Following an extended leave, Louise Rick returns to work at the Special Search Agency, an elite unit of the National Police Department. She's assigned a case involving a fifteen-year-old who vanished a week earlier. When Louise realizes that the missing teenager is the son of a butcher from Hvalsoe, she seizes the opportunity to combine the search for the teen with her personal investigation of her boyfriend's long-ago death . . . Louise's investigation takes her on a journey back through time. She reconnects with figures from her past, including Kim, the principal investigator at the Holbaek Police Department, her former in-laws, fanatic ancient religion believers, and her longtime close friend, journalist Camilla Lind. As she moves through the small town's cramped network of deadly connections, Louise unearths toxic truths left unspoken and dangerous secrets. "Crime-writer superstar Sara Blaedel's great skill is in weaving a heartbreaking social history into an edge-of-your-chair thriller while at the same time creating a detective who's as emotionally rich and real as a close friend."--Oprah.com "One of the best I've come across."--Michael Connelly "Sara Blaedel is a force to be reckoned with. She's a remarkable crime writer who time and again delivers a solid, engaging story that any reader in the world can enjoy."--Karin Slaughter "Will push you to the edge of your seat [then] knock you right off....A smashing success."--BookReporter "Blaedel delivers another thrilling novel...Twists and turns will have readers on the edge of their seats waiting to see what happens next."--RT Book Reviews

An initiation ceremony for an ancient Nordic religion (in the present day) has major consequences, with Louise Rick and her team searching for a missing boy. I really like this series and enjoy traveling to different parts of Denmark with Blaedel. I‘ve been reading these out of order and it seems to be working fine for me!

While I was reading THE KILLING FOREST I decided to answer some questions. The Best part of the book so far is the beginning because so don't know anything and you get dropped into this world.

A very late monthly wrap up for a very slow reading month. 3 great reads, an average read, a work read, and a disappointing audiobook. Looking forward to finally getting back in the zone in July.

The Killing Forest is classic, reliable Scandi-Noir. Louise Rick is a compelling character, suitably flawed and complex. This is a well-plotted novel, which moved quickly, and didn't rely to heavily on the readers' knowledge of earlier books in the series. This was just what I needed for a midterm read.

I didn't realize until last night that this is a book in the middle of a series of books! It could probably read as a stand-alone, but they keep talking about events and characters that aren't in this book. I'm not bailing, just pausing until I can get and read the previous books in the series.

Here's a picture of pups that has nothing to do with the book 😉

GypsyKat Don‘t you hate it when that happens? But at least the doggies are adorable. 😊 7y

I was too caught up in this book and didn't realize Bailey dug a hole. This is the perpetrator at the scene of the crime

lhseidel Let's not jump to conclusions...Bailey probably happened upon some other perpetrator digging that hole and scared it away, saving the day! I mean, that certainly doesn't look like the face of a guilty pupper...😉 7y
Karkar @lhseidel I totally agree! Too cute to dig a hole🐶🐶🐾🐾❤️❤️ 7y
GypsyKat Hahaha! Oh that‘s just too cute! 😍 7y
batsy It's ok Bailey, you're too adorable... So it's more treats for you 😁🐶 7y
CouronneDhiver That‘s a pretty cute little face... you needed a hole right in that spot, didn‘t you? 😍 7y

While I did like this better than The Forgotten Girls it‘s a little bit of a forgetter for me. I‘m bailing on the series here.

Another great one from Sara Blaedel! I love Louise Rick and all of the characters in these books. The crime centered in the this one was personal to Louise and it made the story even better! 4 stars!

This was my first book by this author. I didn't realize it was part of a series when I started it but the book read like a standalone so I had not trouble following.

I couldn't put this book down. From the first word I was sucked in. The action and characters kept me so intrigued that I finished this book in one sitting. A thrilling story with Ancient religious cults and sacrificial woods in a small town was a win for me.

I got this after seeing some ads for it and reading the description. What I didn't know is this is Book 7 in an ongoing series. This is important because throughout the book, there are LOTS of references to previous books with the assumption you read them. I still got through the book, but kept feeling a bit lost as characters who seem to have a history cross paths. It was a fun read, but I wish I knew one had to read the others, hence the so-so.

How is Sara Blaedel not more popular in the US? Also, why aren't the first 5 Louise Rick books available in English? Starting a series on the 6th book is frustrating.

I was expecting it to be as good as Jo Nesbø's work, but sadly it wasn't. It wasn't bad, per se, just less than I expected. Also, the translator either goofed or didn't research fully, but deadmau5 is neither American nor a DJ; he's Canadian and an EDM producer.
