Woman at the Devil's Door
Woman at the Devil's Door: The Untold True Story of the Hampstead Murderess | Sarah Beth Hopton
4 posts | 4 read | 10 to read
Discover the haunting untold true story of the woman whose crimes inspired speculation that Jack the Ripper was a woman. On October 24, 1890, a woman was discovered on a pile of rubbish in Hampstead, North London. Her arms were lacerated and her face bloodied; her head was severed from her body save a few sinews. Later that day, a blood-soaked stroller was found leaning against a residential gate, and the following morning the dead body of a baby was found hidden underneath a nettle bush. So began the chilling story of the Hampstead Tragedy. Eventually, Scotland Yard knocked on the door of No. 2 Priory Street, home to Mary Eleanor Pearcey, the pretty 24-year-old mistress whose dying request was as bizarre and mysterious as her life. Woman at the Devils Door is a thrilling look at this notorious murderer and the webs she wove.

Bookzombie @Chrissyreadit Yes, they were all on my TBR. I love the books. The film is something for the holder of Apple Air Pods. It‘s a very small envelope so maybe Amazon tossed it in the box by mistake. 🙂 5y

First day in our new house! Our furniture (and the rest of my family) are still in Texas so I‘m spending the day reading in my bay window seat in between cleaning and organizing the few things I brought with me.

Phoebe Hogg and her young daughter are discovered murdered in Hampstead in 1890. The supposed culprit is quickly apprehended—she is Mary Pearcey, the 24 year old mistress of the deceased‘s husband. While the two women had a friendly relationship, did Mrs Pearcey snap and kill her lover‘s wife and child in a jealous rage? Had she purposely lured Phoebe Hogg to her home with the intent to kill her?
