Impulse (Reprint)
Impulse (Reprint) | Ellen Hopkins
Sometimes you don't wake up. But if you happen to, you know things will never be the same. Three lives, three different paths to the same destination: Aspen Springs, a psychiatric hospital for those who have attempted the ultimate act -- suicide. Vanessa is beautiful and smart, but her secrets keep her answering the call of the blade. Tony, after suffering a painful childhood, can only find peace through pills. And Conner, outwardly, has the perfect life. But dig a little deeper and find a boy who is in constant battle with his parents, his life, himself. In one instant each of these young people decided enough was enough. They grabbed the blade, the bottle, the gun -- and tried to end it all. Now they have a second chance, and just maybe, with each other's help, they can find their way to a better life -- but only if they're strong and can fight the demons that brought them here in the first place.

Turns out I think I had read this already. Appreciated the different struggle within each character and how they interacted with each other and the same scenes from different POVs.

Long car rides call for back up books and long lost half read reads. Been wanting to start writing poetry again but hasn't flowed like it used to. Maybe this will help open it back up, too.

Didn‘t realize that Perfect was a sequel to this book, so I went back and read it. Again, Hopkins did not disappoint. I loved hearing the inner workings of her characters‘ minds and seeing how they dealt with their demons.

Crank was so well crafted in its verse. Impulse on the other hand has random line breaks that serve no purpose.
The love the characters fall in feels remarkably unrealistic - no buildup whatsoever.

I might have loved this had I read it as a teen. But my adult brain, not so much. It's definitely not Hopkin's best work.
This sat on my shelf for over a decade, and while not the worst book I've ever read, it wasn't worth the wait.

It‘s a rainy Sunday, so yet again no walking today. I am starting a new hardback because sometimes I just need a break from the kindle!!

Currently reading. I've had this book for more than ten years. It has been ages since I last read an Ellen Hopkins novel. In this book she wrote a very minor character with schizophrenia, except he *clearly* has sociopathic personality disorder. They are nothing alike. It's grating on my nerves, I expect better from her. Otherwise, it's Ellen Hopkins as I remember her.

#RumorHasIt okay almost every book with modern day teens in it has kids spreading rumors and gossip. It's just a classic teen cliche that is unbelievably true 😂😂😂

Mdargusch So true! How about this one 6y
Cinfhen I was just about to type the same thing @Mdargusch and the same book!!! I loved it!! 6y
fandom_hellspawn99 I've been wanting to read that, but I forget the name!! @Mdargusch @Cinfhen 6y
Reviewsbylola These covers look great together! 6y
gradcat And it is writ large with social media as a tool for spreading gossip. I would have never made it if social media had been around in my day! (edited) 6y

Ellen Hopkins‘ writing is an example of perfection in YA poetry and tough topics. She really grabs hold of the reader and doesn‘t let go when she writes. This one is excellent and deep and dark and definitely worth the time to read.

My third Ellen Hopkins read this month and my least favourite so far. I listened to the audiobook and found it hard to differentiate between Conner and Tony which made it hard to get into. I kept waiting for something big to happen and it never did. I was bored by the end.

I indiscriminately loaded Impulse as an audio book, but it's written in verse. My inner middle-highschooler was engaged enough that I wanted to connect visually with the text. Fortunately, the collection has a copy. Hopkins is slated to come here for the Tucson Festival of Books in March. #tfob

Bailedbailed

I ended up abandoning this book. I thought this book would delve into more psychological aspects of the characters and of mental illness but the silly romance between the characters was a big turn off for me and changed the entire direction it was going. I read up to page 500 so maybe I bailed early and the series got better, but eh I expected so much and it ended up being very disappointing to me.

I may update this later depending on how I feel about the full ending... My e-book from the library started mixing up the headings and cut off the last few sections after the major final plot point! Darker than what I usually lean towards but I liked how the free-verse form kept things moving.

This is quite possibly my favorite book by Ellen Hopkins. All three characters are beautifully flawed, and the ending gets me every single time.

This was good, but having read Identical and a few of her newer books it was not quite there. I'd say probably a good starting point for Ellen Hopkins though!
