Into the Dim
Into the Dim | Janet B. Taylor
"Instantly engaging, constantly suspenseful, ultimately poignant and satisfying. Loved it!"--Diana Gabaldon, author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Outlander series When fragile, sixteen-year-old Hope Walton loses her mom to an earthquake overseas, her secluded world crumbles. Agreeing to spend the summer in Scotland, Hope discovers that her mother was more than a brilliant academic, but also a member of a secret society of time travelers. And she's alive, though currently trapped in the twelfth century, during the age of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Hope has seventy-two hours to rescue her mother and get back to their own time. Passing through the Dim, Hope enters a brutal medieval world of political intrigue, danger, and violence. A place where any serious interference could alter the very course of history. And when she meets a boy whose face is impossibly familiar, she must decide between her mission and herheartboth of which could leave Hope trapped in the past forever. Addictive, romantic, and rich with historical detail, Into the Dim is an Outlander for teens.

My mother and sister in law read this beauty before me, so the hype was real. This was a wonderful journey and I am “patiently” waiting for the library to get the next in the series.
This is one that I‘d recommend going in blind with. That‘s what my mom did and she had so much fun! I knew what it was about, and didn‘t have as much fun. But it was still good!

This book was so good. It was a nice change from what I typically read. I am a history nerd so I loved all of the historical references and being immersed in a different time period. Highly recommend and can‘t wait to get my hands on the next book.

This was a fun, fast read that would make a great palate cleanser in between heavier books. Not a perfect book but definitely a good first in a series. The characters could use more fleshing out and the time travel technique needs to be expanded on, but the historical details and the story being set up are both incredibly intriguing. Looking forward to reading the second book to see if the series delves deeper into its own mythos. 👇🏼

Laalaleighh Extra points for YA genre originality, lack of a love triangle, and picking a fascinating and sorely neglected era of history to explore. I‘ve never read outlander and can‘t comment on the comparison but if it‘s anything like this, I‘m much more interested to pick it up. Recc‘d for anyone that likes a good ancient rival organizations type feud, time travel, or medieval England. Not recc‘d for people who need lots of depth to their magic systems. 7y
LauraBrook Great review! I had no idea that's what this book was about. Now, I can't wait to read it! #superstacked 7y
Laalaleighh @LauraBrook thanks!! I hope you like it! Like I said it‘s light and definitely not very deep, but it‘s fun and has a lot of potential, Series wise. 7y

Bakingbookworm I enjoyed it (and its sequel) as did my 12 year old niece. I like how she combines some history into her plots and has strong female characters. 7y
JSW Agree completely. Nice quick read. 7y
JSW Also, really the only similarity to Outlander is time travel. IMO. 7y

Next up. I know nothing about this other than it contains timetravel and includes Eleanor of Aquitaine. Sold.

ValerieAndBooks Ooh, I should look into this! Eleanor of Aquitaine is an ancestor of mine 😊. 7y
Laalaleighh @ValerieAndBooks that is so cool! How did you learn that? 7y
ValerieAndBooks My grandma and aunt was/were into genealogy, and over time, traced our lineage all the way back to her 😊 7y

Heretherebedragons Ooh, this sounds intriguing. One question tho: how is it even a dilemma between a) rescuing your mom, and b) staying with your new crush?Does it play out differently in the book than in the synopsis? (edited) 7y
Pagehabit Hey Laura!! We're PageHabit, a book subscription box with a twist. We're going to be doing a very large giveaway soon and we'd love to work with you on promoting it on Litsy. We'd love it if you could email us at hello@PageHabit.com so that we can share the details and compensation with you. Thanks for your consideration 😊😊❤️ 7y
Laalaleighh @Valerie that‘s fantastic! My family traces back to Scottish royalty through the Stuart line and I always feel a bit of a special connection anytime I read books set in Scotland or with those figures as characters! Do you feel the same? (edited) 7y
Laalaleighh @Heretherebedragons I‘m not sure yet! So far it‘s a really unique blend of sci fi and magic set in the Scottish highlands with a hint of a possible romance to come. I‘m about to dive back in and will be sure to tag you in my review when I‘m done so I can answer your question better! 7y
Laalaleighh @Pagehabit sounds lovely! Just sent you an email✨ 7y
Laalaleighh @Heretherebedragons just finished it. That synopsis is incredibly misleading. There‘s not even the slightest bit of choose between rescuing your mom and your crush in this book. It‘s just badly worded there toward the end. 7y
Heretherebedragons @Laalaleighh Ahh, that makes more sense :). On the up side, it's nice to be pleasantly surprised by a book/not get spoiled by the synopsis. 7y
Laalaleighh @Heretherebedragons I agree! I never read the synopsis anymore. And if I do I wait til I‘ve forgotten it to read the book. Synopsis spoil way too much. 7y

Time travel seems to be a recurring theme in my reading recently. I liked the blend between the ancient mystical and the "modern" Tesla tech that made the whole thing possible. Add a few folks out of time, throw in Eleanor of Aquitaine (yay!), Thomas a Beckett (boo!), and a ginormous opal and there's your adventure. Wish there wasn't the "chosen one but unaware of it" trope but that's a YA special these days. Book 2 gets released today 8/1/17.

This novel was so captivating! There is so much detail and thought put into every word on the page. While some of the plot was a bit predictable, I wasn't really bothered by it, as it felt like it was where the story should naturally go. I give this book 4/5 stars

Into The Dim by was one of my absolute favourite books of 2016. I'm a huge fan of time travel books, and Into The Dim is about a girl that discovers that she is part of a secret society of time travellers and ends up travelling back to the 12th Century to find and rescue her mother. It had all of the time travel elements that I love, and more. So when I was sent an ARC of Sparks of Light I was pretty freaking excited (the book in the picture).

Um, how is no one talking about this book?? It's bonkers! Everything I love in a good book - action/ adventure, mystery, and romance all so well written you get swept along for the ride! It beautifully crosses genres and brilliantly includes story elements of fantasy, science, romance, historical fiction, family drama, mystery, thriller, and coming of age tales. This is one of my favorites of the year, can't wait for more from Janet Taylor!

I'm perplexed by the mixed reviews for this book - I thought it was great!

A few thoughts:
1-it takes some time to build up to the time travel + action, but worth the wait
2-there are lots of reveals, historical details + colorful characters
3-the romance aspect is my least favorite part of the story and could probably be a little tighter
4-audio narration by Amanda Ronconi is fantastic! 👏🏻

The long wait between series books is killer! 😩

SO MUCH FUN!

Of my almost-three books completed: two were print + audiobook and one was ebook only. The audios tend to make my reading slower but I don't mind a bit! I didn't do extra giveaways/contests this time, but I'm sure I will next time ⭐️

Thank you to Litsy + #24in48 for making this event so great! I'm excited that I was able to read so much even with a busy family all around me for the full 48 hours. I totally want to do this again.
