Ya sort of about wwii and also sort of about being a stage performer.
Lillia, her sister Naomi, and her father flee Warsaw for Shanghai to escape the Nazi‘s. Unfortunately, her mother gets separated from them and they don‘t know if she survived. A haunting novel about growing up where nothing is familiar. Lillia struggles to adapt, to learn Chinese, to earn money to help feed her family, and makes friends with Wei and his sister Aili. DeWoskin brings to life an interesting and little known slice of history.
Lillia is a Jewish refugee from Poland who finds her way with her father and young sister to Shanghai in the 1940s. I never knew Jewish refugees were welcomed into China during Hitler‘s reign. This was a whole new insight for me and I really enjoyed this book! I will be looking for other Rachel Dewoskin books 📚🙂
Yay! The Chicago Young Adult Book Festival is almost here! I‘m super excited that our school is once again hosting this fantastic—FREE—event. It‘s another great lineup of authors this year. Today, Rachel DeWoskin visited our middle school to talk about the tagged book. The students were interested in learning about the book but even more fascinating to them? The writing process. There is nothing better than bringing authors & readers together.
I don't know how to explain this book other than "touching." It truly is a very different type of story and experience that Lillian goes through . The cultural and language I pact alone but then add I. Your mother, hovering Japanese soldiers, poverty and having to step up at 15 to take care of your sister who clearly has some disabilities...you just can't not feel for her. Decent pacing, interesting characters and some heartbreak
I have never read a book that talks about Jewish refugees using Shanghai as a haven during World War Ii so I'm insanely curious about this one
This is a fictional #YA book about a Jewish girl named Lillia who escapes along with most of her family to Shanghai. They are refugees living in extreme poverty trying to survive. Not much is written about Jews that escaped to Shanghai so it was interesting. I wish there had been more description and depth about the time period and character relationships. So much of the book is Lillia‘s internal thoughts. Will definitely recommend to students!
Just starting this. It‘s already good! #currentlyreading
