Freaky Green Eyes
Freaky Green Eyes | Joyce Carol Oates
6 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
"Later, I would think of it as crossing over. From a known territory into an unknown. From a place where people know you to a place where people only think they know you." Sometimes Franky Pierson has a hard time dealing with life. Like when her parents separate and her mother vanishes, Franky wants to believe that her mom has simply pulled a disappearing act. Yet deep within herself, a secret part of her she calls Freaky Green Eyes knows that something is terribly wrong. And only Freaky can open Franky's eyes to the truth.

What a strange story. Not at all what I expected. Only a few more hours now for me left in #24in48 !!

Since I'm awake, here's something that's bugged me for years. Sue Grafton's the worst offender, but now I see that Dennis Lehane (see above) has the same tendency to give far too many characters green eyes--they're not that common in the real world. Since Patrick Kenzie's abusive father had green eyes, maybe this goes to character, but it doesn't explain the other Kinsey. Is this a detective fiction trope? Or am I just being too picky? #petpeeve

I love how, at nearly 80, Joyce Carol Oates can grab the reader's attention in the way she writes about young people and the issues which affect them. I loved this as I have a couple of others of hers.

Don't really remember much about this one, except that this book came on a Vegas road trip with me, & that I never really understood the point of the "Freaky/Franky" dual persona thing (I think it could have been really interesting, but wasn't fully explored). But I love JCO, so maybe I'll try again

Maggie4483 I should also probably mention that I read this six months after my (wonderful) father passed away, and the subject matter was probably not right for mourning. 9y
