Mother, Can You Not?
Mother, Can You Not? | Kate Friedman
'Happy birthday, spawn. Welcome to the wrong side of twenty-five. The expiration date on your eggs is officially in sight. Tick tock. Love, Mom' This was the text message Kate Friedman woke up to on the morning of her twenty-sixth birthday, but her mother's maternal adoration and helicopter parenting began while Kate was still in utero. Never shy about pushing her only daughter to study harder, to dump her loser boyfriends, to move to 'less rapey' neighbourhoods, Kate's mum has given some truly hilarious but often sage advice over the years. It wasn't until Kate began sharing her mother's messages online that she realized quite how many people would find her mother as hysterical as she does. Over, 700,000 people follow @CrazyJewishMom on Instagram, and this side-splittingly funny mother-daughter duo has been featured in media around the world. From taking Kate to buy her first bra at a speciality drag-queen shop, to stalking a Princeton admissions officer across state lines, to posing as her daughter on multiple dating sites, Mother, Can You Not? is Kate's brilliantly funny and affectionate story of life with her fabulous, eccentric mother.

I totally forgot that a friend of mine loaned me this book and already started another! Should I put my (900+) page book on hold for this one? Anyone else read it? The excerpts she shared with me do look pretty funny! 📚🤓

Dollar Tree haul.
They had like seven boxes they weren‘t opening and stocking. Maybe I opened them myself. I hate waiting.

KathyWheeler I love how you do these posts of what you listen to while you walk. This is when I do most of my listening. I may start doing posts like this as well if you don‘t mind. 7y

The last message is: No, not really. Don't ignore my texts.

This one just came into the library today. I opened it to the part where her mother busts a rescue cat out of the humane society...including hiding it a purse, running, and a squealing tire get away. It looks hilarious. 😆

I'm pretty surprised by how much I liked this. Yes, it is a fun, easy, light read but I actually felt inspired by the end. While I don't want to drone parent nor do I have the cojones to pull have the stunts Kim did, I greatly admire her 💯 support of her daughter's dreams, even the wacky ones, and she reminded me that life is what you make it. I need to remember and to teach my kids to grab what I want and not be afraid to fail. #LitsyAtoZ

Be warned: lots of posting is about to happen. My tree is now bare and I have some quiet time so I'm catching up on reviews, etc. I'm thinking it would be nice if the next @Litsy update could maybe include timed/delayed posts.

raelaschoenherr I would love that too! 8y

A funny, light, and very quick read. I've been following her instagram account for a while now and the book is just as amusing. Although if my mother did some (most) of these things, I would die of embarrassment!!

Wonderful back story on the mom who started it all. A choice read for anyone with a close family, follower on Instagram, or who just want a few laughs about a larger-than-life woman.

I don't follow Kate Siegel's Instagram but I had heard good things about this book. So glad I picked it up! There were parts where I could not stop laughing! As crazy as Kate's mother is, it's obvious they're very close. It's too cute. As a mother, I hope my daughter loves me for all my crazy too.

I devoured this book in an afternoon. Kate is super witty and genuine, and her stories are relatable (even if the exact events they detail aren't). I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quick, lighthearted read!

Absolutely loved this book! My favorite chapter being the cat-stealing one 😂. It's honest, hilarious and extremely entertaining.

Sue Just read the title to my daughter who said 'she must know what she's talking about'. I hear these three words a lot! 😂 9y
