A Bride's Story | Kaoru Mori
21 posts | 19 read | 12 to read
Acclaimed creator Kaoru Mori's tale of life on the nineteenth-century Silk Road heads back to Amir and Karluk. In the year since his marriage, Karluk has grown a good deal, but Amir can't help but feel overprotective of her much younger husband. Karluk wants nothing more than to prove that he can be a strong and competent man--and he may soon have the opportunity to prove just that. Desperate for land to feed their flocks, Amir's former tribe prepares to attack her village with a fearsome arsenal of cannons and guns provided by their new allies. This time the Halgals are not interested in capturing Amir--no one is safe from their terrible assault! Crafted in painstaking detail, Ms. Mori's pen breathes life into the scenery and architecture of the period in this heart-warming, slice-of-life tale that is at once wholly exotic, yet familiar and accessible through the everyday lives of the characters she has created.

I loved the artwork in this first volume of A Bride‘s Story, set in Central Asia along the Silk Road. It‘s a great example of historical manga and I loved how the culture and traditions of nomadic Central Asian tribes were woven into the storyline. Set along the Silk Road, I‘m counting this for #Mongolia #ReadingAsia2021

Librarybelle Good choice! 3y

Lovely as always. This volume features Smith and Talas finding each other again and then traveling from Ankara to Antalya, in 18th century Turkey. Gorgeously detailed illustrations and story as usual. Can‘t wait for volume 12!

I had breakfast with volume 9 of A BRIDE‘S STORY. It‘s a gorgeous series with an astounding amount of detail. Kaoru Mori‘s assistants must be among the hardest workers in the manga industry. #stayhome24in48

Volume 5 continued this amazing series. The artwork and attention to detail continues to be the most incredible I've seen on a manga. The history and work out into the research on the time period and real cultures is just as incredible. If I had to recommend a manga for fans of non-fiction or historical fiction this would be it.

This one was sitting on my to-read shelf for way to long.... and now I must go looking for vol 2.

Set in the 19th century among the tribes of the Silk Road, it chronicles the life of a 20 year old girl sent off to marry her new husband, who is 12. Much of this deals with their meeting and getting to know each other as she moves in with his family. The story is sweet, but takes some unexpected turns. Gorgeously illustrated in black and white.

TheHeartlandBookFairy @Riveted_Reader_Melissa wow, it sounds amazing! I both love and loathe it (lol) When I find out a book I'm reading is part of a series and I must immediately find the rest of the series and read them 😂 This is in part why my TBR stack is always growing and never diminishing lol 😅 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @TheHeartlandBookFairy Yes! The struggle is real, and luckily the people on Litsy seem to understand. 5y

Eyelit I‘ve had my eye on this series for a while now... the only thing preventing me from starting is the fact that my library is missing a few in the series (2 and 5 I think) so until they reorder I‘ll have to love vicariously through you 😄 5y
JazzFeathers Wow! Sounds good! 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Eyelit maybe try interlibrary loan for those? I‘m really jealous, my library doesn‘t have any of them. 5y

This series continues to blow me away. It is not only stunning art, it is a truly beautiful age gap romance. This 20 year old woman is wed to a 12 year old. She has to wait for him to grow more before they start their family. She still gives everything to their relationship, and he gives everything that he can. It's amazing.

This series is so great. Historical fiction, girls as main characters, set on China‘s Silk Road. This one focuses on the twins‘ schemes to find husbands.

For today‘s graphic novel a day-athon, I have started the manga Bride‘s Story by Kaoru Mori. I am not very far, but the artwork is beautiful. Even though it‘s all in black and white, the detailing and texture that they create in the different fabrics, are gorgeous. Thanks to the random customer that recommended this to me! #manga #currentlyreading #bridesstory #gorgeousartwork #itsallinthedetails #latenightreading

AvalonRoselin Glad you enjoyed the art on this one! My friend was happy to hear you liked it. Also hi, finally on Litsy way too long after you recommended it!! 6y

I‘m still awake and reading, and still loving this series. I‘ve had volumes 8 and 9 on my TBR shelf for a bit and I‘m glad I saved them for tonight.
Most of my reading this time around has been mangas and GNs, but with a house guest around it‘s been easier to focus when there are pictures involved.
I‘m hoping I can get another “regular” book read, but since it‘s 2AM and the #readathon ends in 5 hours, that seems unlikely. Shorties to the rescue!

LauraJ It‘s only midnight here. Five hours to go! 6y
LauraBrook @LauraJ Are you to try and make it for 5 more hours? 6y
LauraJ @LauraBrook To be fair, I didn‘t start until 7am. I‘ll probably crash around 4am. 6y
Readerann Next time, I‘m adding GN‘s to my stack. Way to go on staying up so late! I decided I needed to try to sleep, but ended up tossing and turning so I should have just kept on reading! 😬 6y
LauraBrook @Readerann You should, it‘s an easy way to get some pages under your belt and back into the swing of things (especially after an interruption). I hope you got some sleep this afternoon! Thanks for readathonning with me again, I can‘t imagine this without you! 😚💖 6y

A Bride's Story is one of the most gorgeous and moving mangas I've ever read. If you want to learn about history, especially women's history, that you've never learned about before--and also cry over characters--then this is a must. #manga

I'm up to volume 5 and as usual the art is astounding. I'm less fond of this one than previous however as I don't find the twins (prominent in the first part of the volume) as interesting and as much as I admire the author's devotion to historical accuracy I could have done with less sheep slaughter

kammartinez I adore, ADORE this manga. Have you read Mori's Emma? That was a lovely story as well,m :D. 8y
Soscha Yes! I loved Emma. I found this series by looking for her other work. I mostly do shojo. My other fave mangakas are Mitsukazu Mihara, Kaori Yuki, Riyoko Ikeda, Ai Yazawa, and Setona Mizushiro. 8y

I found the first two volumes of this at the library today and loved them. It's a light and incredibly beautifully drawn historical fiction manga about a nineteenth century Silk Road bride. It's definitely a fun read, and full of historical details and tidbits.

My first manga! Extremely impressed with the art and a solid 3.5 ⭐️ on the story. Quibble: I really do prefer my serialized works to have some kind of internal story arc, and this on just ends in the middle. Very cool slice of life about a time and culture I know little about. Likely to continue!

BookBerries Looks beautiful!! Will check it out. I'm just now dipping my toes in manga waters too 🤓 8y

Now why did I take so long to read this manga? It's set along the Silk Road and Amir is a 20-year-old, skilled in archery and horsemanship, wed to a boy 8 years younger. It's a gentle kind of story, one where she learns to adapt to her new life with her new family - and they to her. Beautiful!
