In the race to save one of their own, Sigma Force must wrestle with the deepest spiritual mysteries of mankind in this mind-expanding adventure from the #1 New York Times bestselling author, told with his trademark blend of cutting edge science, historical mystery, and pulse-pounding action. Arriving home on Christmas Eve, Commander Gray Pierce discovers his house ransacked, his pregnant lover missing, and his best friends wife, Kat, unconscious on the kitchen floor. With no shred of evidence to follow, his one hope to find the woman he loves and his unborn child is Kat, the only witness to what happened. But the injured woman is in a semi-comatose state and cannot speakuntil a brilliant neurologist offers a radical approach to "unlock" her mind long enough to ask a few questions. What Pierce learns from Kat sets Sigma Force on a frantic quest for answers that are connected to mysteries reaching back to the Spanish Inquisition and to one of the most reviled and blood-soaked books in human historya Medieval text known as the Malleus Maleficarum, the Hammer of Witches. What they uncover hidden deep in the past will reveal a frightening truth in the present and a future on the brink of annihilation, and force them to confront the ultimate question: What does it mean to have a soul?

"Uncertainty is a key aspect of human reasoning. Without uncertainty, we would never doubt ourselves or our decisions. We would be certain that we‘re right all the time. It‘s this certainty that can make an AI‘s ability to learn turn brittle over time. But if an AI is uncertain and capable of doubt, it can begin to judge itself, to question whether an action or decision will have the consequence it desires and test it more thoroughly."

This one sat on my shelves for years until I picked it up. Whenever characters start to settle down, marriage, kids etc, I start to lose interest. I shouldn't have doubted Rollins ability to keep a book action packed. Not my favorite of the Sigma stories but an enjoyable read none the less.

Don‘t ever change Kowalski! And PLEASE Rollins, do not kill him off. EVER.

WorldsOkayestStepMom Kowalski is my favorite member of Sigma Force! 3y
MaleficentBookDragon @WorldsOkayestStepMom Mine too. Then Kat and Monk. I also wish there was more Painter in action. I‘m really over Seichen and Gray. 3y

Ebook by my fave author on sale today. Not one of my favorites but if you‘re into the Sigma Force novels it‘s a must read.

GingerAntics I have this one and a few others. I think I finally started getting them from them in the proper order. 4y
coffees I read the summaries of his books since one of his books with a blue cover was a bestseller at my job and they're so interesting! 4y

#wondrouswednesday @Eggs

1. Monk and Grey in the Sigma Force novels (see tagged)

2. Charles Dickens

3. 1) Dante‘s Inferno (read in middle school), 2) Crime and Punishment (read for senior term paper)—the age I read them probably explains why they were so intimidating

Almost still Friday! #friyayintro

1. We have beautiful wildflowers here in Texas. So traveling the backcountry roads to see them. Once Mom and I drove hundreds of miles in Texas on a genealogy trip and collected countless different kinds of wildflowers. Mom, I still have them! 💐🌷🌼🌸🌺🌻
2. Extrovert w/ a healthy dose of introvert

A good book by Rollins but different. He most often tells about a historical mystery, which creates a current crisis. The history here is the Malleus Maleficarum, but no mystery about it. It‘s a plot device for a story about artificial intelligence, sci fi that initially slowed me down. But it picked up again & was hard to put down. I think Rollins writes about science that scares him, but AI seems to top his list. #readingeurope2020 #france ⬇️

It took me SIX months to finish this book by my fave author. First, it initially wasn‘t that compelling to me (but it definitely got there once I was halfway through). Then, I stopped for #wintergames and other Litsy challenges. I finally picked it up again a few weeks ago and couldn‘t put it down. The Rollins I know and love was back. A real review to come. #readingeurope2020 #France but also works for #Spain #litsyatoz #letterC

This is the first for a Rollins book, or any adult book I remember reading. It sounds ominous...here goes.

GingerAntics Oh my. Keep us posted. 5y
Texreader @gingerantics It was very very dark. If you want to know, remove the spoiler tag on the next comment. 5y
Texreader @GingerAntics End of the world dark. Funny, that‘d be the case for most of his books if he did alternative endings. He always points out what‘s true science- and history-wise in his books and I think this one really scares him. 5y

GingerAntics I own this book. I think I‘m going to have to read this for myself now. Was it you who recommended this author to me? 5y
Texreader @GingerAntics yes ma‘am! 5y
GingerAntics So much to read that I already own. I don‘t even know where to start. I guess I‘ll have to figure it out come June when I don‘t have a job anymore. Eek 5y
Texreader @GingerAntics Off for the summer or end of a contract? 5y
GingerAntics Neither. We‘re moving, and I don‘t have a new job yet. Hopefully I‘ll have one before I leave, but it may be easier to get one when I have a local address. 5y

True confession. Rollins is my fave writer. But I can‘t get through this one. I started this well before #wintergames and well, here I am trying to finish it. His books are ordinarily fast-paced can‘t-put-it-down. Not this one. At least I‘m slightly more than halfway finished and I remember what was happening when I stopped reading. Diving back in! I need this for #readingeurope2020 #France and #litsyatoz #LetterC

Thanks for the tag @Eggs ! #wondrouswednesday

1. As an adult: James Rollins; as a teenager: Stephen King
2. 9, not counting those in my husband‘s library; most of mine hold my scrapbooks and craft supplies
3. I prefer to alphabetize by author, but my book hoarding habits often lead to random accumulations here and there

Eggs I do the same-store scrapbooks on some of the lower shelves 5y

My fave writer ever has signed up to write fantasy, not my genre, at all! 😬 But then I read this article and it looks pretty good! I fear it‘s the end of Sigma Force though. He‘s working on the next book called The Last Odyssey. Sounds ominous. Oh please don‘t let it be the end! You can do both!!

I didn‘t know he started out writing fantasy as James Clemens. I guess I‘ll have to dip my toes into fantasy.

amsu311 Noooo...I hope he doesn't end Sigma Force... 5y
LibrarianRyan I didn‘t know he was James Clemens. Cool. 5y
Texreader @amsu311 Hopefully not. I couldn‘t handle it. I do need to reread the series. When I started it I read them out of order. 5y
Texreader @LibrarianRyan Me neither until I read the comments to this article. Off I go to read fantasy. Crazy how love of an author can send you places you didn‘t think you‘d go. 5y

1. The Sigma Force series of which the tagged book is the latest. I‘d finally get to read them in order
2. Socks except during summer in Texas
3. Breckenridge CO. I thought it‘d be the highest point in Norway, in the Jotunheimen mountain area, where it looks like you‘re on top of the world. But it‘s a good 4000 feet lower than Breck
4. Strawberries, bananas, or coconut
5. Not this year

I‘ve given up Stalking Jack the Ripper for now in favor of my favorite author. Seems like brilliant timing as he explores the lingering mystery of the Malleus Maleficarum, the book used in the Middle Ages to identify and prosecute witches, in this latest Sigma Force novel. Hello October!

1. Sigma Force, the tagged book being the most recent
2. Stranger Things
3. The what now? Do you mean the World Cup cuz I love women‘s ⚽️! (just joking: No)
4. I made turkey & dressing tonight. The family loved the Thanksgiving preview on the 1st night of cold in south Texas (55F)
5. Nope. If anything, he‘s anti-reading unless it‘s a how-to manual (to take care of his bees or his cows, or to build his airplane)

As much as I go on about my new favorite authors, no one beats James Rollins. I‘ve waited almost a year for his new book to come out in paperback (I‘ve given up hardbacks for the most part because of the space they take up), and today I finally got it. Rollins is the perfect mix of historical mystery, scary but true science, and on-the-edge-of-your-seat thriller. He‘s simply the best and I can‘t wait to dig into this one.

Crazeedi I cant say I've read him, but your blurb makes me want to get one to read! 5y
jenniferw88 @Crazeedi same here! 5y
Texreader @Crazeedi @jenniferw88 I didn‘t read them in order for years but given the chance I would now. So I do recommend starting with book 1 of the Sigma Force novels. 5y
Crazeedi @Texreader good, cause I hate reading out of order, it just bugs me! Loo 5y
Texreader @Crazeedi Some of his books are better than others, but the last ones have been really good. I loved them from the start. He always ends the book with a “what‘s true” in this book. It‘s so cool. 5y

Oh my gosh @Bookwormjillk my #mysterymessageswap 📦 is amazing. It is so thoughtful and thought out. The hand written recipes are a beautiful touch. I have a backyard now so I am planting flowers and veggies. I am very into aromatherapy as well. And the icing on the cake is the signed James Rollins! Thank you so much!!!
Thank you @TheReadingMermaid for hosting such a fun personal swap. Let's do more of these!

Hmmm. Love the Sigma Force gang - but this was definitely not a 5 star (or even a 4 star) read for me. The ending was my favorite part, but man it seemed like it took forever to get there.

Wow. This isn‘t meant to be horror but it scares me to death. Gray and his Sigma team are after an evil group trying to destroy the world with the ultimate weapon. That weapon is Eve, an AI entity that wasn‘t created for evil but is capable of it in the wrong hands. Another great book by Rollins!! Combination of science, history, and action packed suspense.
