#DivineDecember Day 1: Perfect for #Elves prompt. Reminiscent of Grimm Brothers‘ The Elves and the Shoemaker, this story tells the story of elves who do things for the baker, the carpenter, the winemaker, the tailor (among others) – as they sleep. My full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-e85

This is a picture of me and my rescue dog Max. He is the sweetest! This picture has nothing to do with this post! 🤣
I‘m wanting to read an Anne Tyler book. I‘m not sure where to start? Suggestions please? Which one is your favourite?
Thanks in advance 😊❤️

Cathythoughts Gorgeous picture 👍🏻❤️ 4y

JennyM Hi my lovely 👋 I read this one a few months ago and it was pretty good. It‘s also in the Booker long list. 4y
MemoirsForMe Thanks @Tanisha_A ! 🤗❤️ I‘ve read most of her books and I‘m sure whichever one you pick will warm your heart. My top faves are Redhead by the Side of the Road, Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, Breathing Lessons and 4y
CarolynM Lovely photo😍 My favourite Anne Tyler is 4y
CarolynM I started once but couldn't get into it. It probably wasn't the book's fault. I've always intended to try again but never quite got there. 4y
CarolynM I've just remembered the other one I loved 4y
MrsMalaprop I love her & have read heaps of them. Not sure you can go too wrong. I really liked . 4y
MrsMalaprop Earlier this year I read and loved . 4y
MrsMalaprop @Curiouser_and_curiouser is working her way through Anne Tyler‘s work. She may have some tips 🤔. 4y
Curiouser_and_curiouser Thank you for bring this issue to my attention @MrsMalaprop ☺ I definitely agree with you on Spool of Blue Thread, loved that one! The first I ever read of hers was Patchwork Planet which was really lovely. I haven't had a chance to read Breathing Lessons or Back When We Were Grown Ups, nor The Accidental Tourist but all 3 are sitting on my shelf patiently waiting their turn. I think they all have a very similar feel & style, just pick 1 & enjoy! 4y
Rissreads @Curiouser_and_curiouser @MrsMalaprop I‘m leaning towards either Back when we were grownups or dinner at the homesick restaurant. These story‘s interest me the most 😊 4y

A week ago I asked for help in breaking my slump... and then I disappeared... for good reason.
That night, my sister-in-law had a stroke. We didn‘t know if she was going to survive the night.
So two things...
First, here‘s the list, starting with @Laughterhp ‘s pick, Deliver Her.
Second, now I‘m going to ask you for more books. If you know any good books for an 8 & 7 y.o. dealing with an ill parent, tell me about it.
Thanks, Littens ♥️🙏🏻

TrishB Sending love and healing wishes ❤️ 5y
Sweettartlaura Thanks, @TrishB 🙏🏻. We have a long haul of a recovery. But we are so grateful to have the opportunity of a recovery♥️ 5y

Cinfhen Oh wow, I‘m so sorry to read about your sister in law. Sending much love and prayers. Don‘t have kids suggestions but maybe @LibrarianRyan or @Lmstraubie might xx 5y
Sweettartlaura Thanks, @Cinfhen - it was quite a shock. We could use all the prayers we can get - thank you 🙏🏻 5y
Balibee146 Sending love and healing Vibes 🙏🙏 5y
Sweettartlaura Thanks, @Balibee146 - we gratefully accept them 🙏🏻 5y
LibrarianRyan So sorry. Most of the ones off the top of my head are when a parent dies like When a Monster Calls. Or the sibling is sick like Alcapone does my homework, or rules. I kill giants is excellent but is about cancer. Let me do some looking. 5y
LibrarianRyan Might be reaching a bit but not the best for your specific situation 5y
LibrarianRyan There‘s one more but I can only get 1/2 the title right now. I can picture the cover. It has magic in the title and I remember it because parents wouldn‘t let their kids read it because it was about “magic”. It wasn‘t. It was about machines. And the machines are an allegory for fixing a “broken” human. I really liked it when I read it over a decade ago but I can‘t roll the title off my tongue at 2:30 am. So when I remember I will post it for you. 5y
Sweettartlaura @LibrarianRyan thank you!!! And we‘re good with books about magic, either actually or metaphorically 😉 - in fact, the 8 year old & I are reading Harry Potter together these days⚡️ So if you come up with that third one, I‘ll take it 😉. It might be perfect right now. Thanks again! 5y
CoffeeCatsBooks Sorry about your sister in law. I hope her recovery is a speedy one. 5y
Librarybelle Sending positive thoughts ❤️ 5y
Chrissyreadit I‘m so sorry that happened. It‘s really hard when a parent becomes disabled, especially when children are young. One suggestion I have is to see if the hospital she went to has a Child Life department. The Child Life Specialist May have some good suggestions to help children in tough situations. The second thought I have is to read books about children with disabilities- goodreads has a list I will link here- but this can help children understand 5y
Chrissyreadit The different ways challenges can be faced, break down stigma and show loving supportive friends and family. I have read several from this list and would use them too https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/14211.Best_Children_s_Books_with_Disability_... 5y
Chrissyreadit A third book I love to use at work is 5y
Chrissyreadit I‘m not sure of your exact situation, but feel free to bounce ideas. I went into my field largely because my dad became disabled when I was 14 and my brothers were 7 and 10. It is wonderful that you can be a support for them! 5y
CBee I am so sorry to hear about your SIL, sending positive and hopeful thoughts for a successful recovery ♥️♥️ 5y
Laughterhp Sorry to hear about your sister in law. Sending positive thoughts💚 5y
Sweettartlaura Thanks, @Chrissyreadit ! These are great ideas. Right now, they haven‘t even been able to get a full neurological assessment to know what her deficits are & where they‘ll be starting. But there will surely be some disabilities to conquer ~ maybe permanently adjust to. This is great - I‘ll keep this list handy as we move through this 🙏🏻 5y
ValerieAndBooks I am so sorry this has happened to your SIL. Looks like you‘ve gotten a few good suggestions on reading material. Sending good thoughts for a good outcome for her💖. 5y
Samplergal How is your SIL? I am a speech pathologist if I can help with any rehab type questions. 5y
Sweettartlaura @Samplergal good to know! It‘s been 10 days since the event, and she‘s still “out of it.” She‘s no longer under sedation. But she‘s still not really awake/aware. She‘s responded to her name, and my brother‘s voice. But they can‘t do a full assessment yet. We do expect speech issues - the stroke was in that section of the brain, and she couldn‘t speak at all when it happened. So I‘ll keep you in mind moving forward - thanks 🙏🏻 5y
Samplergal Please do. Sounds like she is in good hands. She will likely understand more than she‘s able to give back. Keep talking to her. Audiobooks when she‘s up to it. Slow your speech to her and allow her time to try and respond. Ask for speech consult and see what MD is thinking. 5y
Samplergal Ask the SLP where your SIL is if she has any books for that age child. I‘m retired and not active with the latest. She may be able to write a social story for your niece if nothing else is available. I‘ll let the librarians suggest if they know something for that genre. 5y

Litsy, help! I am in a serious reading slump. And I need to get out of it. So I‘m going to ask you to pick a number from 1 - 75 - we‘ll do it like real Bingo. I‘ll assign a number to my TBR, and work down your suggestions until I get over this slump.
Thanks, everyone 🙏🏻

Pickpick

#SeasonsReadings Day 10: #ElfOnTheShelf indeed. This story tells the story of elves who do things for the baker, the carpenter, the winemaker, the tailor (among others) – as they sleep, because apparently Cologne is reputed to have easygoing, fairly-laid-back townsfolk who love sleeping more than working.
