I want to wish my fellow Littens - Jewish and non-Jewish a peaceful Shabbat. A Shabbat quotation posted by my rabbi “never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead

Kaye Can you explain what the celebration is , and what the symbolism is ? Only because I don‘t know anything about your different religious days. It‘d be good for us all to learn. Do you eat special foods ? 6y

AmyG That is so lovely. I always say “good shabbos”because my grandparents said that. Wishing you all a good shabbos. 6y
alisiakae @kaye Shabbat is the Jewish sabbath (comparable to Sunday in Christianity). It starts at sundown Friday through sundown Saturday. Typically, Jewish families light the Shabbat candles at sundown, and say the Shabbat blessing. You often see challah on a Shabbat table too. Shalom means peaceful, so Shabbat shalom essentially means: have a peaceful Shabbat. It is often said as a greeting or goodbye at 🕍 services. 6y
alisiakae @AmyG My hubby‘s NYC relatives (which is most of his family, lol) all say good or happy shabbos. Doesn‘t the “good” derive from Yiddish in some way? (edited) 6y
Kaye Very beautiful. Thank you for explaining. I live in an area that has no diversity in any area of life, so I‘m greatly lacking in knowledge of other religious customs. Is the embroidered cloth something that was handmade and passed down ? It‘s very pretty. I wish you all a peaceful Shabbat. 6y
AmyG @4thhouseontheleft I grew up in the suburba of NYC..so maybe that‘s a regional thing. Could have been Gut Shabbos and I googled. It‘s the Ashkenazi was of saying good shabbos. (edited) 6y
AmyG @Kaye the embroidered cloth is a challah cover. I got one when I got married. It coukd be passed down. 6y
Kaye Thanks @AmyG Will you pass yours down to one of your kids or is it a custom to buy them a new one when they marry ? 6y
Alfoster Beautiful!😍 6y
Blaire @kaye @amyG mine was a wedding gift as well. And @late thanks for your question as others have explained Shabbat is the Jewish day of rest. It starts at sundown Friday night and ends when there are three stars in the sky on Saturday night. Challah is the special braided egg bread that people eat. If you are more strictly religious you don‘t do any work or use electronics on Shabbat including lights, phones, tv, and cars. 6y
AmyG @Kaye I gave my mother-in-laws to one daughter. My other daughter isn‘t very interested...maybe yet? 6y
Kaye Thank you @Blaire. It‘s very fascinating. I‘ve seen a braided bread type item in bakeries but not sure that‘s the same thing. I think all religions have different levels of strictness on some of their rules, or at least all the churches in this area are like that. Can I ask, and I‘m honestly not asking to be rude, but who looks for the 3 stars ?Does everyone watch for their own ? (edited) 6y
Kaye Don‘t give up , @AmyG Maybe someday 🙂 6y
Blaire @kaye that‘s sort of the traditional rule but if you google your city you can find an official end time on line. But if you see three stars you know you‘re good. 😍☺️ 6y
Kaye Well I think it sounds like a beautiful tradition and a religion to be very proud of to continue these traditions. Thank for you answering my stupid questions. @Blaire I think if more people tried to understand our differences, we‘d all learn to respect each other more. 6y
Blaire @kaye yes. I agree and that was part of the reason I posted. After the discussions re that buddy read the last few days, I wanted to emphasize this as a place for warmth and kindness. 6y

Today I will walk my daughter through the doors of our synagogue under the shadow of an anti-Semitic hate crime in Pittsburgh, which happened at a temple her father attended when we went to Pitt.

My heart aches for the Jewish community of Pittsburgh, who had the peace of Shabbat violently destroyed.

Yesterday & today I struggle to open a book, but I am volunteering to help progressive women get elected. We will not be intimidated or silenced.
