Speaking Up | Gillian Triggs
9 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
As president of the Human Rights Commission, Gillian Triggs advocated for the disempowered, the disenfranchised, the marginalised. She withstood relentless political pressure and media scrutiny as she defended the defenceless for five tumultuous years. How did this aspiring ballet dancer, dignified daughter of a tank commander and eminent law academic respond when appreciative passengers on a full airplane departing Canberra greeted her with a round of applause? Speaking Up shares with readers the values that have guided Triggs' convictions and the causes she has championed. She dares women to be a little vulgar and men to move beyond their comfort zones to achieve equity for all. And she will not rest until Australia has a Bill of Rights. Triggs' passionate memoir is an irresistible call to everyone who yearns for a fairer world.

I found this to be a really powerful book. Gillian Trigg is an inspirational woman, who not only overcame her own gender discrimination but in her role as the President of the Human Rights Commission fought to eliminate discrimination.

She explains legal specifics in relatable terms. And reminds me that we still have a work to do in terms of discrimination.

I did this as an audiobook and loved that it was read by the author.

So after many hours, one coat of stain and three coats of varnish, my bookshelves are finished. I've really enjoyed the process and the time to listen to some fantastic audiobooks. Now to give them time to dry. Cannot wait to fill them.

MayJasper Oh wow. 4y

Having followed her story in the Australian media and seen her speak at a recent Writer‘s Festival, I was keen to read this memoir.
Triggs covers human rights regarding refugees, Aborigines, women, Muslims, Marriage Equality and more.
She makes a case for why Australia has strayed from human rights principles and advocates for a charter or bill or rights to help guide us back on track.

In 2007 the Australian government suspended the operation of the Commonwealth Racial Discrimination Act (1975) in order to intervene to ‘protect children‘ in the Northern Territory.

The government seized control of many aspects of the daily lives of residents in remote Aboriginal communities. 😢⬇️

MrsMalaprop And 10 years later, has it worked? “The Commonwealth has reportedly budgeted more than $2 billion...yet Indigenous domestic abuse, alcohol-fueled violence & high rates of incarceration have grown significantly worse...[&] the number of indigenous children in out-of-home care has increased more than three-fold.” 6y

MommyWantsToReadHerBook Wow, that is so incredibly sad 😢 6y
Chrissyreadit That is sad- I did not realize it was still a struggle outside of US. I‘m heartbroken for the pain these generations have faced. 6y
tournevis @Chrissyreadit Australia, Canada, Peru, Columbia, Domonican Republic... Colonialism is so very alive still. 6y

🤔 I recently saw Gillian Triggs speak on this issue. She seemed hopeful that if elected the Australian Labor Party, under Bill Shorten‘s leadership, would work to develop such a charter or bill of rights. 🤞🇦🇺

CarolynM I'm old enough to remember the last time we tried this (it was Gareth Evans's baby as A-G). When the small constitutional changes they wanted got rejected (and I will never understand why people voted against requiring the States to pay them compensation for compulsory acquisitions) they kind of just gave up. The chances of getting any kind of bipartisanship theses days is zero and without it you won't get public support for things like this. 6y
CarolynM That doesn't mean I don't think we should have a Bill of a Rights, just that I think it's an unrealistic goal while our politics are the way they are. 6y
MrsMalaprop @CarolynM 😞 The state of our nation. 6y

Freespirit Is her book good? 6y
MrsMalaprop @Freespirit I‘m a third in. A little dry at times, but a worthwhile read in terms of developing my understanding of why human rights are currently not properly protected and about her time as HRC President. 6y
Freespirit @MrsMalaprop I admire her. She had a tough job😬 6y

#Currentlyreading

I am pleased to be getting my teeth into this memoir after following her journey as President of the Australian Human Rights Commission in the media and then seeing her speak about her book at the Ubud Writers Festival in October. #UWRF18

How have we “regressed so far”? Indeed 😔

Freespirit I was wanting to hear her speak recently in Sydney but I live 5 hrs away and couldn‘t make it. I really admire her. 6y
CarolynM I'm glad she related back to the Tampa incident. That was an outrage on so many levels. 6y
MrsMalaprop @Freespirit She was a very good speaker & gave some fascinating insights. I wondered whether she may have been even more candid than usual given she was speaking outside Australia! 6y
Jeg Indeed Why??? 6y
