Flash Boys
Flash Boys: A Wall Street Revolt | Michael Lewis
In this book the author argues that post-crisis Wall Street continues to be controlled by large banks and explains how a small, diverse group of Wall Street men have banded together to reform the financial markets. A report on a high-tech predator stalking the equity markets, this book is about a small group of Wall Street guys who figure out that the U.S. stock market has been rigged for the benefit of insiders and that, post-financial crisis, the markets have become not more free but less, and more controlled by the big Wall Street banks. Working at different firms, they come to this realization separately; but after they discover one another, they band together and set out to reform the financial markets. This they do by creating an exchange in which high-frequency trading, source of the most intractable problems, will have no advantage whatsoever. The characters are each completely different from what you think of when you think "Wall Street guy." Several have walked away from jobs in the financial sector that paid them millions of dollars a year. From their new vantage point they investigate the big banks, the world's stock exchanges, and high-frequency trading firms as they have never been investigated, and expose the many strange new ways that Wall Street generates profits. The author shines a light into the darkest corners of the financial world, where anyone in contact with the market, even a retirement account, is part of the story. But in the end, this is the story of people who have somehow preserved a moral sense in an environment where you don't get paid for that; they have perceived an institutionalized injustice and are willing to go to war to fix it

Awesome narration and technical detail of a very complicated system of events

There‘s something about describing complex systems using clever metaphors which never ceases to awe me. I came away with ethical questions and answers, the resolute need to Google several allusions, and a more nuanced understanding of “the big banks.” (Kuba rec)

I love anything that Michael Lewis writes. This book was educational and frustrating. Frustrating because well the system is screwed up and when someone tries to fix it they are always meant with a ridiculous amount of resistance! I would suggest you reading this because I found I learned more about the financial system, legal system and Wall Street culture.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Really Michael Lewis could write a book on corruption in the paper clip industry and I would read it. This was a page-turner for me as I love reading about the hijinxs of Wall Street. It is not quite as good as Money Ball or The Big Short, but for making the world of high frequency trading at least somewhat comprehensible it does a brilliant job. As usual it is the quirky character studies that make this so readable.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Love your review—the corruption in the paper clip industry is rampant!! 6y
Redheadrambles @BarbaraTheBibliophage haha I have no doubt - it‘s a high stakes industry;) 6y

Fabulous and eye opening read about the past decades “unhealthy” volatility of stock markets; increased pseudo trading volumes and how small retail investors are ultimately impacted by the sharks aka HFT firms...must read for anyone in finance

I thought the book would be pretty dry, so I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I knew pretty much nothing about the stock market before reading this book, and now I feel like I get maybe... 2% of what‘s going on? Lewis‘ writing was straightforward and very easy to follow, and by focusing on the human aspect of the story, really drew me in.

If I didn't need to get up with the kids in the morning, I would still be buried in this book.

Lewis could make the inside of an empty box seem fascinating. It's the characters that always draw me in, and these characters are varied and complex. It's no wonder his books get optioned for movies. Don't wait for the movie, for you'll miss out on detailed research which makes this a page-turner.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I just read his The Big Short earlier this year and I couldn't agree more, he does wonderful things with complex characters. I just picked up Moneyball, and I'll definitely be looking for this one. 8y
