Antisocial Media: How Facebook Disconnects Us and Undermines Democracy
Antisocial Media: How Facebook Disconnects Us and Undermines Democracy | Siva Vaidhyanathan
3 posts | 3 read | 9 to read
If you wanted to build a machine that would distribute propaganda to millions of people, distract them from important issues, energize hatred and bigotry, erode social trust, undermine respectable journalism, foster doubts about science, and engage in massive surveillance all at once, you would make something a lot like Facebook. Of course, none of that was part of the plan. In Antisocial Media, Siva Vaidhyanathan explains how Facebook devolved from an innocent social site hacked together by Harvard students into a force that, while it may make personal life just a little more pleasurable, makes democracy a lot more challenging. It's an account of the hubris of good intentions, a missionary spirit, and an ideology that sees computer code as the universal solvent for all human problems. And it's an indictment of how "social media" has fostered the deterioration of democratic culture around the world, from facilitating Russian meddling in support of Trump's election to the exploitation of the platform by murderous authoritarians in Burma and the Philippines. Facebook grew out of an ideological commitment to data-driven decision making and logical thinking. Its culture is explicitly tolerant of difference and dissent. Both its market orientation and its labor force are global. It preaches the power of connectivity to change lives for the better. Indeed, no company better represents the dream of a fully connected planet "sharing" words, ideas, and images, and no company has better leveraged those ideas into wealth and influence. Yet no company has contributed more to the global collapse of basic tenets of deliberation and democracy. Both authoritative and trenchant, Antisocial Media shows how Facebook's mission went so wrong.

#Booked2019 #socialmediafocus The author is a professor of media studies. While we love the fact that social media can let us reach out around the world to friends & family, the dark side is ever present as ones that would do us harm , propagandize, create fake news , narrow our information to filter bubbles that reinforce what we already like & believe.Through quizzes & personality tests, what we buy , like, & read. Please read this book!👇

Leftcoastzen Vaidhyanathan was taught by Neil Postman who passed away before this type of social media was prevalent but not surprising, their talks were often about the rise of the internet. He died in 2003 & wrote this incredible book 6y

I hate Facebook! Sorry to rant on here but this actually is book related. Facebook shut me down and put me in jail because I posted that short story that I wrote. Never mind the fact that I had trigger warnings all over the damn place but I'm sure because I wrote about self-harm that some ignorant fool decided to turn me in to Facebook and they decided to shut down my account. I'm more than pissed.
😡🤬😡

rretzler 😡☹️ 6y
Birdsong28 Oh no!!! I saw that post and you were so clear in your trigger warnings. Never mind we love you on here and you have the right audience to appreciate the hard work you have put into your story. 😘 Facebook is not a good place any more, I hardly go on it and when I do I come off it straight away as it's just full of rubbish. 📚📖 6y
Leftcoastzen Oh no! They are awful. 6y

BeansPage @Birdsong28 I'm definitely starting to see that now. I wasn't really on Facebook a lot before. Only to post on my Facebook page but apparently that's not even safe for me to do anymore. I'm just so dismayed by this... 😩 6y
Laughterhp Facebook is the worst. If you can‘t even talk about your feelings on your own page, is ridiculous!! I still have my Facebook, but never use it! 6y
AmyG FB is awful. I am only on there to see pics of my great nieces. And books. They are a horrible platform. 6y
RvnclawWhovian Like @Laughterhp said, Facebook is the worst. They police so much now but miss things that actually should be removed like blatant racism. I deleted the app for Lent and I gotta say, I don‘t miss it. The only reason I still even have one is because of a couple private groups I‘m in that I love. If it weren‘t for them, I‘d delete my Facebook in a second. 6y
ravenlee I hate Facebook. I joined it because my friends are crap (most of them self-professed) and it‘s the only way to stay in touch with them (makes me wonder if it‘s worth having them at all, recently). It‘s such a high-drama place, all the freakin‘ time. 6y
BeansPage @rretzler @Birdsong28 @Leftcoastzen @Laughterhp @AmyG @RvnclawWhovian @ravenlee I'm so sorry to bring the drama here you guys. I really didn't mean to do that I just honestly don't feel that there is any other safe place for me to express my feelings. I'm just so dismayed and I think it is absolutely ridiculous. Thanks for your comments you guys ❤️🤗❤️ 6y
LibrarianRyan @RvnclawWhovian I gave it up last year. I have to keep an account because of my job but only open it about 4 or five times a year. 6y
MaleficentBookDragon I only go on a few times a month to check on certain family members. I hate FB so much. I am much happier without it. I'm sorry that you had this happen to you. You can ALWAYS rate and talk here. 6y
Freespirit That's not good @TheReadingMermaid I still have FB and post for special events but find I use it less and less. I look at Litsy way more and tend to tailor my other social media to groups that I'm interested in like history and reading. I originally joined FB to follow my 3 sons on their adventures but I find now they don't use FB at all! (edited) 6y
cobwebmoth I hate Facebook so much! Sorry this happened to you. *hugs* 6y
Eggs Facebook=Big Brother=Censorship Poor baby 😞 (((hugs))) 6y
Princess-Kingofkings That's awful! What's wrong with honesty?!?! 6y
bullbunny Whaat some people! How rude! 6y
SleepyDragon I use FB to connect with friends/family and read news articles from various sources, and don't have much problems with it, but I have my account privacy set at max so that I can control who sees my content. I also use the block feature often when commenting on news articles, as there are certain bullies about. If it makes you all feel better, FB got taken out by karma today. It's been down most of the day. 6y
SleepyDragon Sorry you got reported. The way FB enforces its standards can be pretty wack. 6y
BeansPage @NeesyBeth I posted the story on my Facebook page and because it is a public Facebook page set as a business all posts have to be set as public. so what I'm guessing is that somebody saw the post didn't like the content of it and reported me. 6y
BeansPage @NeesyBeth and haha they really deserve it 😂😂😂 6y
erank58 I use Facebook strictly to keep in touch with my college professors and to monitor my township's news feed, and nothing else. I stopped posting when I realized I was worried about how many "likes" I would get, which is awful to think about! The less I use it the more confident and self-accepting I become. 6y
jb72 I‘m sorry this has happened to you. FB has gotten ridiculous with its censorship. I‘ve started to read your story, and while I‘m only shortly into it I see nothing wrong with the content. I have a friend on FB who gets “fb jail” all of the time for innocent comments. 6y
HippiesPJparty I've had my account deleted for about a year now. Sometimes I feel guilty for not keeping in touch with some people, but I feel so much happier and more fulfilled without it. People so often use it to bully eachother. I can't believe they censored your story! I used to post screenshots from google about the environment and it would get removed. I don't think FB knows what it's doing. :P 6y
