Astrix - Astrix et Cloptre - no6 | Ren Goscinny, Albert Uderzo
post image
Mehso-so

(1965) Astérix, Obélix, and Panoramix go to Egypt to help build a temple that will settle a bet between Cleopatra and Caesar. Hijinks ensue, but the usual fun is soured in this one by some racist caricatures that should really stay in the 1960s.

I did a reread of this childhood favourite in the original French. I‘ve always loved this explanation of how the Sphinx‘s nose was broken.

This fills my 1965 slot for the #192025 challenge. @Librarybelle

Librarybelle Great choice! 2y

Very sad to hear that Asterix' founder Albert Uderzo passed earlier this week at the ripe old age of 92.
Thank you Sir, my childhood reading habits soared when I found my father's stash of Asterix and Tintin comic books. My world would not be the same without them.

1️⃣ Someone was talking about it on Twitter, but it took a year before the Android app came out
2️⃣ Can I get a full head of hair back?
3️⃣ There are so many! I've not had snake yet.
4️⃣ I don't think I feel guilty about watching any show. I watch too many home reno shows when I could be reading, but I don't feel guilty about it much.
5️⃣ Tournevis is Amonbofis's henchman in tagged. Been that online since 2002.

As per @kaye's question: how I came about my online name.

I've been Tournevis online since 2002. He's Numérobis's henchman in Astérix et Cléopâtre, one or the best animated musicals ever made.

Clare-Dragonfly I just realized I‘ve probably been pronouncing it wrong. 6y
Clare-Dragonfly I thought YouTube would help but it didn‘t. Does “tournevis” translate to “screwdriver”?! 6y
tournevis @Clare-Dragonfly Yep! I like it because 1) The best film and 2) Being a woman online sucks and screwdrivers are "manly" 6y
tournevis @Clare-Dragonfly You can watch the whole film here before they kill the stream https://youtu.be/8qVDyVDbU1k 6y
Clare-Dragonfly Well, I don‘t understand French at all, but I like your reasoning! 6y

Tournevis has been my online name since the early 2000s on fanfic BBSs and on LiveJournal. I've been online since before the advent of graphic interfaces like Mosaic (I'm old), but I later adopted Tournevis because I liked the throwback to Astérix et Cléopâtre (the animated movie) and its little shifty henchman. It's been a nifty way to hide my identiy.

julesG Interesting story. I do remember Mosaic being a new thing and everyone trying to hog the two computers in the university computer lab that had it. 7y
tournevis @julesG I remember those days! In 1992, before Mosaic, there were two connected computers in the Humanities library at my uni (there were banks of them in the sciences lib) and I was one of a handful of people using them, talking fanfic on BBSs! Good Times! 7y
BookNAround I loved Asterix. We read the first comic in my French class in high school (way back in the dark ages). I still have my French copy but could never read well enough now to keep going in the original language. 7y

tournevis @BookNAround Astérix is so full of puns, it's a challenge for sure. 7y
Chelleo Great backstory!! How is it pronounced? I‘m sure I‘m butchering it in my head. 7y
tournevis @Chelleo Like it sounds, it's screwdriver in French. 7y

MOVIES! These are my five favorite movies which I own as physical media. 📽️Astérix et Cléopâtre is my no1 of all time. My online name is taken from it.

📽️Citizen Kane, 📽️Wizard of Oz, 📽️An American in Paris and 📽️Singin' in the Rain would displace all four after Astérix if I owned them in DVD/Blue-Ray.

Another set of books that I loved as a child were the Asterix & Obelisk books. Once I got my library card for our local library system, I was set free as a reader! I read every copy of these books in the library multiple times, and loved every single read through. Definitely on my list of #LizsLibraryLoves

tournevis My internet name is from the Astérix et Cléopâtre movie, you know. Amombofis's henchman. 7y

I inherited these from my mother. She is not dead just done with these. I don't read too many comics nowadays but during my childhood I must have read these about a thousand times.

drokka When I was at elementary school, we would argue about who would get to read the new one first. Love them. 8y
Martta @drokka I always borrowed them from the library. I must have read these and the rest of them tens of times. 8y
Martta I think the Olympic one was my favourite this Cleopatra was a close second. 8y
drokka The Olympic one is fantastic! 8y
