The author accompanied naturalist George Schaller into the Tibetan plateau in the Himalayas in search of blue sheep (more goat than sheep) and their predator, the snow leopard. For months they hike the treacherous mountains to & from Crystal Mountain. A very slow but lovely read, although I tired quickly of the Buddhist history. The author experiences extreme ups and downs and it reminded me so much of Bernard Ollivier‘s walking the Silk Road, ⬇️
Why is it the women who have the vices?

“dead yetis everywhere”

The author describes the blue sheep among the higher elevations in the Himalayas, about as high as humans can survive and live year round.

The author is describing a local inhabitant and I love this phrase: “possessed by the fury of acquisition.” Heaven knows that happens to me in bookstores and craft stores! 😂

Crystal Mountain & village of Shey #Nepal
“The power of such a mountain is so great and yet so subtle that, without compulsion, people are drawn to it from near and far, as if by the force of some invisible magnet; and they will undergo untold hardships and privations in their inexplicable urge to approach and to worship the centre of this sacred power. . . .”

More about the snow leopard.

I‘m finally learning about the snow leopard. Maybe that means they will see one soon in the book.

He‘s perfectly described my reaction to heights given my immense fear my whole life. He probably has a better excuse, he‘s on a ledge that‘s barely as wide as he is, over 100 feet above the rocky edge of a lake.

This is part of the author‘s somewhat lengthy discussion about whether yetis exist in the Himalayas (or Sasquatch or Bigfoot).

Hiking in the Himalayas. No room for a misstep here.

I found this quote humorous, his future wife being “drawn to a man shouting at the sky”

The author received this letter from his 8-year-old son before he left the last place in #Nepal that had mail. Kids are so blunt. I underlined the sentence about the cat and dog. Truer words were never written.

I still find it odd how much I enjoy travelogues these past few years, which I never read before without having the inspiration of Litsy challenges. But I learn things I find fascinating like this tidbit. Who knew?

Written about the author‘s travels in 1973. Not sure if this is still true today.

GS is the author‘s traveling companion, a field biologist he met in Africa
The origins of the Buddha

To put this in perspective, this book is about the author‘s trek through Nepal in 1973, 48 years ago (when I was 4 years old)

Picking out my next ebook and thinking about this one. Looks like it may work for more than one country in Asia but we will see. It definitely works for #Nepal #readingasia2021 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB
Flea just announced this book to be the one for his bookclub. He is so awesome doing this. Discussion will be on Instagram on April 27.
I am hesitating to read the book. It doesn‘t appeal much to be honest. Or is it good? Any thoughts?
I will attend the discussion anyhow! ❤️🌶 #RHCP
Not sure where I read rave reviews on this one, but I ordered it immediately! It has sat on my shelves ever since. #tbr #higherground #getmovin
Have already failed at my goal of not buying any new print books in August. 🤷🏻♀️
Peter Matthiessen describes his heroine journey through the Himalayas in a way that has the reader lost in the mountains. The Snow Leopard tells the tale of a long trek that brought Matthiessen closer to frostbite and exhaustion than a normal person would care to go. But in doing so, Matthiessen describes how this journey brought him closer to himself, and uses local philosophy of Buddhism and history to explain the mountain's serenity.
