1.) Drivers going straight despite having the turn signal on.
2.) Oxford, England
3.) Max Perkins: Editor of Genius. It was fascinating!
4.) A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
5.) What book do you want to read or finish before year's end?
I've been working my way through the third volume of Thomas Merton's journals for way too long. Time to finish it.
Haven't had a lot of reading time lately but I was determined to finish this excellent biography. Berg captures the humanity of the legendary editor Perkins as well as the legends he discovered: F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Thomas Wolfe. The book is also provides an inside look at the publishing industry at the time. Some things have changed but much is interestingly the same.
I recently saw the film Genius and when I read in the credits it was based on this biography I had to get it. Now I can't stop reading it. Fascinating to read about how writers like Fitzgerald and Hemingway went about their work, and the lengths Perkins had to go to to convince his conservative publishing house to open up to their fresh new voices.
Just watched the movie last night and have added the book to my TBR list. Something the movie emphasized was Maxwell Perkins' great gift for friendship. He gave so much of himself in order to help his writers shine.
Even going to the movies adds to my TBR list! You might not think that a movie about editing could be warm, earnest, and heartening, but Genius is. And don't worry if you're no particular fan of Thomas Wolfe's (I'm not, at all); Jude Law flies his crazy flag and Colin Firth exudes editorial love.
"... But if I have understood some of the things you have said to me, I believe you think the most living and beautiful thing on this earth is art, and that the finest and most valuable life is that of the artist... "
- Thomas Wolfe
Saw this movie today. I would highly recommend it. Great performances by all. Now I need to read the book.
We're very excited that Max Perkins: Editor of Genius is being made into a film starring Colin Firth and Jude Law! Max Perkins was a brilliant editor who worked with Fitzgerald, Hemingway, & Wolfe. We're re-releasing the book with a new cover to match the film, & we're giving copies away on Twitter!
