In the Forests of the Night | Amelia Atwater-Rhodes
9 posts | 37 read | 9 to read
I was born to the name of Rachel Weatere in the year 1684, more than three hundred years ago.The one who changed me named me Risika, and Risika I became, though I never asked what it meant.I continue to call myself Risika, even though I was transformed into what I am against my will.By day, Risika sleeps in a shaded room in Concord, Massachusetts.By night, she hunts the streets of New York City. She is used to being alone. But now someone is following Risika.Someone has left her a black rose, the same sort of rose that sealed her fate three hundred years ago.Three hundred years ago Risika had a family -- a brother and a sister who loved her.Three hundred years ago she was human. Now she is a vampire, a powerful one.And her past has come back to torment her. This atmospheric, haunting tale marks the stunning debut of a promising fourteen-year-old novelist. From the Hardcover edition.

Began fallowing Amelia Atwater-Rhodes from the author's first book.

Discovered way back when Target devoted a huge portion of the stores to books, music, & DVDs (oh, those were the days, 🤔, although not really that long ago 😂).

When I leaned the author was only a couple of years older than me, I became an immediate fan.

Since it has been years, I cannot give this a indepth review, yet this book & author will always remain among my favorites.

DaveGreen7777 I can so relate to your comment about when Target sold books, CDs, and DVDs! I still lament the loss of my local Borders bookstore that sold all three! 😭 7mo
AnnCrystal @DaveGreen7777 Oh, Borders!! I spent hours upon hours there as a teenager...they even sold magazines...🥲that was a magical store📚! (edited) 7mo
AnnCrystal @DaveGreen7777 did you ever shop at Fry's? They didn't sell books (only movies, music, magazines). WOW, they were a place of fantasy. Every store was fashioned after a theme. Alice In Wonderland, space, etc. Oh, I miss them too! 7mo

DaveGreen7777 @AnnCrystal Oh, I‘m not familiar with Fry‘s, but it sounds amazing. I live in the Northeast, and we had Newbury Comics, which was similar. No novels, but they sold comic books and magazines, as well as CDs, DVDs, and collectibles. They didn‘t do cool things like fashion their stores after a theme, though. ☹️ 7mo
AnnCrystal @DaveGreen7777 any book/comic/movie/music store is a rarity these days. Actually, I haven't been to an actual bookstore in years...I know, shame on me👀! (edited) 7mo

In the forests of the night is an short vampire novel from the 90s, written by a teenager. It‘s been a while since I read this but I remember it being really good!

phantomx I should re-read this novel. I didn't get too far into the series, but I loved the authors Shapeshifter series 2y

After a disappointing string of mediocre, boring, bail-worthy reads, I‘m returning to something familiar and comforting. I love this author and I can read her YA novels in just a few hours. Perfect for a little pick me up palate cleanser

#WildestDreams

The writing in all three of these books has a very dreamlike quality. Lyrical and flowing prose tells 3 very different stories, with a supernatural/paranormal element.

In the forests of the night: A reluctant and reflective vampire who has a strong bond with a Tiger at the zoo
A certain slant of light: A love story between ghosts
Deerskin: Based on the fairytale donkeyskin (Trigger Warning)

Cinfhen Nice choices 🤘🏽✅😊they all sound like just the right amount of dreamy & disturbing 7y

These were the first vampire books I remember reading, and they still have a place on my shelves!

However, compared to the more adult books I read now, there are definitely some very vague plots and limited characterisation. I still love them though! ☺️

The covers leave something to be desired though! 😂🤣😅
