I‘ve also found beavers cute, but I never had any idea how important they are to developing habitat, preventing catastrophic flooding, balancing the ecosystem and more. This book is completely fascinating and so engagingly written. I‘m truly a beaver believer now and can‘t recommend this more! 🦫🦫🦫🦫🦫

This was fascinating. I never knew how important beavers and beaver dams are to the environment. The author explains their significance in an easy to understand and engaging manner. Anyone interested in nature would enjoy reading this.

A definite pick! Terrific storytelling about beavers and how they effect ecosystems. Goldfarb is a terrific writer and the best kind of science writer who can make complex ideas seem understandable. You don‘t have to like beavers to appreciate this tale of their role as a lynchpin species with an outsized role in shaping landscapes and ecosystems. Recommend this title to anyone interested in a good nature story!

Ducks nest in the grasses that spring up around pond fringes. Songbirds perch in coppicing willows... turtles and lizards are more abundant near beaver ponds..; that beavers increase plant species, ... fishes... mink... raccoons... frogs... mosses...‘

I really liked this book! Finished listening while gardening today (forgot to take a pic and now it‘s dark). I learned so much about beavers and am convinced of their importance in our ecosystem. plus there were a lot of references to the Northwest, where I grew up, and California, where I now live. It was nicely written with an overall appreciation for nature. I‘d give it about 4.5🌟

Goldfarb is a journalist who did a ton of research for this, but it‘s written like a great story, totally engaging! Superb on audio with Will Damron narrating! The book just won 🏅2019 PEN/E.O Wilson prize for literary science writing!

5 stars. Part natural history, part plea to bring beavers back to landscapes. Excellent writing. Ben is smart, funny and passionate about beavers! Solastalgia: the emotional distress we feel at witnessing the destruction of beloved homelands: the dissonance of change, the rapidity of loss, the disorientation wrought by environmental grief. Soliphilia: the notion of political commitment to saving loved home environments.

Goldfarb will make any reader a Beaver Believer with this lyrically written ode to our castorid cousins.

Wonderfully written book. Halfway through. I work on river restoration and have lived near beavers so it is right up my alley. But anyone could get engrossed in this interconnected story involving American history, ecology and a large industrious rodent. No wonder the Washington Post included it in a list of best non-fiction of 2018.
