Benjamin Franklin: An American Life
Benjamin Franklin: An American Life | Walter Isaacson
In this authoritative and engrossing full-scale biography, Walter Isaacson, bestselling author of "Einstein "and "Steve Jobs," shows how the most fascinating of America's founders helped define our national character. Benjamin Franklin is the founding father who winks at us, the one who seems made of flesh rather than marble. In a sweeping narrative that follows Franklin s life from Boston to Philadelphia to London and Paris and back, Walter Isaacson chronicles the adventures of the runaway apprentice who became, over the course of his eighty-four-year life, America s best writer, inventor, media baron, scientist, diplomat, and business strategist, as well as one of its most practical and ingenious political leaders. He explores the wit behind "Poor Richard s Almanac" and the wisdom behind the Declaration of Independence, the new nation s alliance with France, the treaty that ended the Revolution, and the compromises that created a near-perfect Constitution. In this colorful and intimate narrative, Isaacson provides the full sweep of Franklin s amazing life, showing how he helped to forge the American national identity and why he has a particular resonance in the twenty-first century."

Bailedbailed

I can‘t believe I bailed on this one. I really admire Isaacson as a writer, but half-way through, and I am having trouble connecting with Franklin as a person. One of the reasons I love Biographies so much is the ability to connect with, learn from and find myself in the people. This wasn‘t happening right now. Maybe another go later will be better.

I confess that I do not entirely approve of this Constitution at present; but sir, I am not sure that I will never approve of it: For, having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged, by better information or fuller consideration, to change opinions even on important subjects, which I once thought right, but found to be otherwise.

Interesting biography of Ben Franklin. Probably one of the most misunderstood of the founding fathers. 3.5/5 🌟

My Dad and I are having an inadvertent book club at the beach. Every time we talk about what we‘ve read so far we say “me too!!!” It‘s delightful.

Chelsea.Poole Gorgeous photo! And how nice to have a dad who is a fellow reader ♥️ 2y

No other Founding Father cared for the average American the way he did. Full review https://www.facebook.com/1082882538/posts/10224548532035781/

Enjoyable biography of Benjamin Franklin. He‘s definitely not my favourite Founding Father however, I was certainly more impressed with him after reading this book. The book‘s enthralling but not as well written as David McCullough‘s John Adams. Still well worth the read since I‘m on an early American history kick right now. Next up: Thomas Jefferson!

Franklin went on to catalog the most common conversational sins...the greatest being "talking overmuch...which never fails to excite resentment." He joked (about)watching two (people of this type) meet: "The vexation they both feel is visible in their looks and gestures; you shall see them gape and stare and interrupt one another at every turn, and watch with utmost impatience for a cough or pause, when they may crowd a word in edgeways."

Weekend #AudioBook. Lately I'm listening books (than reading). Has anyone experienced similar change in their reading habits?

Ericalambbrown Yep! Especially with seasons. I listen more when the weather outside is nice and I need to be moving. Colder/rainier times I read more. 6y

As an editor, this passage made me LOL --it's a story that Ben Franklin told to Thomas Jefferson when the latter was distraught over the heavy-handed edits that members of the Constitutional Convention were making to his draft of the Declaration of Independence. It's still funny--because it's so true! 😄

Isaacson writes highly readable biographies. I especially enjoyed the chapter on the Constitutional convention, where Franklin's thoughts about compromise resonate in contemporary political dilemmas. Since Franklin's convictions draw from liberal and conservative theories, most should find something to admire about the subject. The text is pictured with a turkey, the bird Franklin preferred to the bald eagle as a national emblem.

Ben was a fascinating guy. Another well-written book by Walter Isaacson. I also enjoyed "The Innovators", but I think "Steve Jobs" is his crowning achievement.

Perfect. This is what happen when one overachiever write about another overachiever. I believe that all kids should read it to start appreciating the weight of history and how very cool it is to be an intellectual and to love knowledge.
