Leanora Sutter. Esther Hirsh. Merlin Van Tornhout. Johnny Reeves . . . These characters are among the unforgettable cast inhabiting a small Vermont town in 1924. A town that turns against its own when the Ku Klux Klan moves in. No one is safe, especially the two youngest, twelve-year-old Leanora, an African-American girl, and six-year-old Esther, who is Jewish. In this story of a community on the brink of disaster, told through the haunting and impassioned voices of its inhabitants, Newbery Award winner Karen Hesse takes readers into the hearts and minds of those who bear witness.

I loved the setup of the story told by those bearing witness to the klan coming to a small Vermont town some who got swept up in the message and others who saw through the glamour and fought to send them packing.

The parallels between this historical fiction novel and the present day are chilling.

I don't buy multiple copies of the same book unless it's for my classroom, so usually those have the same cover. This wonderful novel in verse is one of the few exceptions where I have a couple different editions in my class library. The one with the different photographs is definitely my favorite.

Quick read. This is a middle grade novel written in verse with 11 narrators. It was a bit difficult to keep them all straight in my head so luckily there's pictures of each with short description at the beginning. I like the story and the idea of showing differing viewpoints of everyone in this Vermont town when the klan comes, but I think middle graders might lose a little in this with not keeping the narrators straight.

I've only read this and Out of the Dust by Hesse, and love both. My sixth grade students overwhelmingly liked Witness more than OOTD; it is definitely more immediately engaging.
