Louder Than Hunger | John Schu

What is louder than hunger? The voice in his head telling him he is a loser who shouldn‘t eat, doesn‘t deserve to eat. This portrait of a young boy suffering from anorexia and those determined to help him is inspiring. The voice feels genuine and telling the story in verse was genius.

I‘m enjoyed this companion to “Alone”, but I have to say I liked Aline more. As that focused on a singular character, this was split between 4 POVs, all told in either verse, news article style, or like a script which was a little distracting and couldn‘t get as close to the characters. The story is good though, and I‘m glad to see what happened to everyone who “disappeared “ in Alone.

This was a very quick read but didn't captivate me nearly as much as Alone did.

Addison_Reads I agree. I loved Alone and was so excited for this one, but it just didn't connect the same way. 1mo

The Girl in the Walls | Meg Eden Kuyatt

I recently read and enjoyed Kuyatt‘s Good Different, so when I saw this on NetGalley I had to read it as well. V is artistic and autistic, and she‘s not quite looking forward to spending a summer with her very particular grandma Jojo. Then she realizes there‘s a ghost in the walls and starts to learn secrets about women in her family who weren‘t allowed to be their true selves. Must she also conform or will she break the patterns of the past?

Where was this book when I was a child. As a 46-year-old woman I am all in my feels about a book that makes me 11 again. I am lucky that I did not have Ellie‘s mother, but my aunt and my grandmother were just like her. Ellie is a girl who is not small. She‘s been big all her life. She‘s been picked on by people at school, people in neighborhood, and even her mother. This constant referring of “you could be pretty if you lost weight”.

LibrarianRyan “Your problems are your own because you‘re fat”.” We could love you and like you more if you weren‘t big”. If you have a big girl in your life they need this book. Whether they‘re two years old or 102 years old. This novel in free verse is written with love and compassion and hope and bravery. The best thing about this book is how happy it leaves you feeling at the end. Happy and knowing that Ellie will most likely be OK. Because she‘s learned to 2mo
LibrarianRyan stand up for herself. She learns to let others know that their behavior affects more than just them. I loved Ellie in the story. I understand the idea of star fishing and just floating. At age 11, I was in Alaska and the pool was my best friend. So much to not only like but to love about this book no matter your age, no matter your size. It moves quickly, so quickly that you‘re done before you had a chance to fully live out the message in the 2mo
LibrarianRyan pages. I love everything about this book and it will probably be one of my favorite books of the year. 2mo

Wow, I don't know if I have the words to express how much I loved this book. It was heartbreakingly beautiful and the verse style is impeccable. Each word carries weight and right down to its placement on the page matters. And it manages to take readers on a journey that is both familiar and mysterious, with surprises along the way.
