Walks With Men
Walks With Men: Fiction | Ann Beattie
14 posts | 15 read | 4 to read
Ann Beattie arrived in New York young, observant and celebrated (as The New Yorkers young fiction star) in one of the most compelling and creative eras of recent times. So does the protagonist of her intense new novella, Walks with Men. It is 1980 in New York City, and Jane, a valedictorian fresh out of Harvard, strikes a deal with Neil, an intoxicating writer twenty years her senior. The two quickly become lovers, living together in a Chelsea brownstone, and Neil reveals the rules for a life well lived: If you take food home from a restaurant, dont say its because you want leftovers for "the dog." Say that you want the bones for "a friend who does autopsies." If you cant stand on your head (which is best), learn to do cartwheels. Have sex in airplane bathrooms. Wear only raincoats made in England. Neils certainties, Jane discovers, mask his deceptions. Her true education begins. "One of our eras most vital masters of the short form" (The Washington Post), Beattie brilliantly captures a time, a place and a style of engagement. Her voice is original and iconic.

Book 2 completed for #LittenListen #audioathon.

I‘m not sure if this would be a short story or novella at 2 ish hours. It‘s about relationships, mostly gone wrong. I found it pretty unsatisfying. I‘m not sure what the author meant to convey here besides disappointment in love and trust.

#curiouscovers black and white.
From the holiday list this fits for National Columnist day, about a journalist.

I'm not sure if I liked it or not. It begins as a typical story you might see in The New Yorker in the eighties about a young writer's experience in a relationship with an egotistical older male writer who cheats. But the narrative soon unravels into stranger territory. It seems like a parody of high brow writing of the period it is set - there are character names like 'Goodness' and 'Destiny' that strike me as tongue-in-cheek. Overall it was a 🤷

This was nearly a Pan - but a few intriguing lines/concepts resonated with me enough to save it. I feel like there's something left here to be desired... maybe I just didn't "get it"? Short enough that I slogged through... but if it had been longer I likely would have bailed. No likeable or accessable characters here for me!

Did not enjoy #walkswithmen - I found it meandering & cliche. Thankful I only paid .69 cents. Moving on...

My first completed read for #24in48 and it is a book where nothing happens other than a young woman making bad decisions and somehow she tells it twice in 100 pages. This was a filler book on Book Outlet to get to my $35. @24in48

The other part of my Book Outlet order... All.of these were $1-3! Some of the covers are striking. Others were selected for location (cold weather islands.)

vivastory I discovered Book Outlet due to an article about how to stick to a book buying ban. Backfired badly. 😂 7y
ReadingEnvy @vivastory yeah my husband's response was "maybe it's time to admit you have a problem" 7y
vivastory @ReadingEnvy The prices are irresistible though! 7y

ReadingEnvy @vivastory yes and you have to get so many more to get to free shipping!! Heh 7y
vivastory @ReadingEnvy That's the trap 😬 7y
saresmoore @ReadingEnvy I'm LOLing at your husband's comment. @vivastory I just managed a Book Outlet order yesterday of $35.03. It was a proud moment. Oh, and that order included a book specifically for my husband, so maybe I'll get away with it? I must adhere to a ban now, though, as my children need backpacks and sneakers for school... Ahh, the struggle. 7y
vivastory @saresmoore That's a good plan, soften your husband with a book 😂 I am trying to stick to a book buying ban (unsuccessful) as I'm going to Left Bank Books when I visit St. Louis & i want to have plenty to spend. 7y
ReadingEnvy @saresmoore @vivastory the cost is one thing and important but right now our big issue is space... So I didn't spend a lot.but ended up with 13 books... Doot doot doooo 7y
