She Was the Quiet One
She Was the Quiet One: A Novel | Michele Campbell
From the author of Its Always the Husband comes a riveting new suspense novel about privilege, power, and what happens when we let ambition take control. For Rose Enright, enrolling in a prestigious New England boarding school is the opportunity of a lifetime. But for Roses vulnerable twin sister Bel, Odell Academy is a place of temptation and danger. When Bel falls in with a crowd of wild rich kids who pressure her into hazing Rose, the sisters relationship is shattered. Rose turns to her dorm mother, Sarah Donovan, for advice. But Bel turns to Sarahs husband Heath, a charismatic and ambitious teacher. Is Heath trying to help Bel or take advantage of her? In a world of privilege, seduction, and manipulation, only one sister will live to tell the truth. In a novel full of twists, turns, and dark secrets, Michele Campbell once again proves her skill at crafting intricately spun and completely compelling plots. Praise for She Was the Quiet One: "Campbells skillful characterization and her shocking final twist make this follow-up to Its Always the Husband well worthwhile. Readers who enjoyed Simone St. James boarding-school mystery, The Broken Girls, should give this a try." Booklist Praise for It's Always the Husband: Twists, turns, and a puzzling mix of suspects . . . will keep readers turning the pages. Booklist An intriguing whodunit that examines the explosive potential of secrets to destroy friendships, marriages, and lives . . . a page-turner. Kirkus Reviews

I enjoyed the story but I wasn‘t surprised how it ended and I figured out most of the story pretty early on. Kept me reading to see if I was right though! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

...meh.
Found it predictable and the “subtle” clues were blatantly waved right at me, so for me there was zero mystery. Still, I found myself wanting to read on, if only to prove my own predictions were correct. They were 🤷🏼‍♀️

This had quite a few bad reviews but, although I definitely can‘t rave about it, I quite liked it. I enjoyed the two points of view: students trying to fit in to a new school, and the adults, settling in to their own new jobs and responsibilities. A bit predictable at times and there wasn‘t a feeling of suspense about it but it had enough of a pull to keep me reading.

Fraternal twins Bel and Rose become orphaned and their grandmother becomes their guardian. She decides to send the girls to boarding school as is their family tradition. The once close twins start drifting apart as Bel falls in with the wrong crowd and Rose focuses on her studies and doing the right thing. A twisty psychological thriller that will have you re-thinking any plans of boarding school.

Rose and Bel are twins who recently enrolled in a boarding school. While they have different personalities, one item at the top of EVERY female student‘s priority list is alone time with Heath Donovan, a charming teacher on his way to potentially

I predicted the ending after just a few chapters, and I was not fond of the epilogue (unnecessary?). Still if you‘re looking for an easy read set in a boarding school, this book isn‘t too bad.

PRAISE GOD ITS OVER. Yikes. Guessable plot. A “twist” epilogue that wasn‘t a twist at all and was such a disappointing closer. Unrealistic dialogue. This is my second book by Campbell and echoes my feelings about her debut. She just isn‘t for me. ⭐️ #Netgalley

I WANT to like Michelle Campbell but I can‘t believe one single interaction in this book. Like, no two teenagers talk this. Ever. Send help. I still have another 50% to slog through. #netgalley

Hestapleton @AntoinetteBuchanan its a Netgalley book, so I promised them a review! Plus, I‘m in it only to know which of these characters I hate so much died lol (not a spoiler). 5y

I am REALLY having a tough time with this one. I can‘t figure out how such an intelligent author assumes her reader is an idiot (everything is over explained to the nth degree) and has created a cast of female characters who are each dumber than the next! The only character who is remotely interesting and multi dimensional is the handsome yet villainous male lead (🙄)Barf. I‘ll finish it but I don‘t think there is anything that can save this one.

jpmcwisemorgan Sometimes I wish we had an anti-TBR for books we definitely don‘t want to read. 6y
TheFunkyBookworm @jpmcwisemorgan haha i think that‘s a great idea- this one would def make the list! 6y
RadicalReader @TheFunkyBookworm can‘t believe some of the lengths authors go to I felt the same with reading some of Edgar Allen Poe‘s writing where he‘d spend an entire couple of chapters talking about the color and intensity of the background and scenery 6y

For your viewing pleasure- a little blurry slice of heaven. Hubby working late tonight and it‘s my off night from the gym, so I took my book on a date to Bonefish grill for shrimp tacos and delish blackberry sangria. My apologies for the shit picture... I try to avoid flaunting my “millennial-ness” in public 😂 📖 🍷 🍤 🌮

I know this hasn‘t had many positive reviews so I‘m going to go to bat for this book. I absolutely loved this book! I was hooked right away and read it quickly. I could see why some people wouldn‘t like it due to a certain character but for me this is a solid 4🌟 entertaining read! There isn‘t much of a twist and it isn‘t really a psychological thriller. We know a murder happens, it isn‘t so much the who dunnit but the story. 👇

Overall enjoyable mystery about a pair of fraternal twins who are sent to a boarding school after being orphaned. You know from the start one of the twins has been murdered and the other stands accused. But you don't know the victim until probably 3/4 of the way through. How it came to that end is not too twisty, but enough, and the audio performer was amazing, her voice for one of the characters was so spot on, it almost made me giggle each time

I enjoyed this very much. A fancy east coast boarding school is the setting of a murder, which we learn upfront. One of a set of twins has died. The story weaves the twins POVs leading up to the murder with present day police interrogations. We learn well before the end which twin died and also learn who the killer is, but there still some nice suspense and fun twists. I liked the characters and enjoyed the pace and atmosphere. A fun whodunit!

3/5 stars! When I first started this book, I was unsure I would be able to finish. The writing and dialogue just was not working for me. However, the second half of the book got good enough to keep my interest! I found myself wanting to know what had happened to the twins. There were a few twists and even though they were a little predictable, they were very chilling and suspenseful. Thank you to the publisher for my free copy!

The New England boarding school seems like the answer two families are looking for, but when a murder is committed, everyone begins to question what's really going on in this prestigious school. Twin sisters Rose and Bel find themselves pitted against one another as the school brings out a dangerous rivalry between them, and the wife of one of the school's teachers begins to question the man she's married to.

It‘s rare for me to pick up a book set in a boarding school and not love it. Unfortunately, this was one. At the bet you learn that one twin is accused of killing the other only you don‘t know which twin died. The first 2/3 of the book is rewind to get back to the beginning and learn who died. The last third is solving the mystery (which is about as hidden as a baby playing peek-a-boo. #netgalley

Clare-Dragonfly The first 2/3 sounds amazing! But maybe not worth it 😨 6y
