Gentleman's Murder
Gentleman's Murder | Christopher Huang

The year is 1924. The cobblestoned streets of St. James ring with jazz as Britain races forward into an age of peace and prosperity. London's back alleys, however, are filled with broken soldiers and still enshadowed by the lingering horrors of the Great War. Only a few years removed from the trenches of Flanders himself, Lieutenant Eric Peterkin has just been granted membership in the most prestigious soldiers-only club in London: The Britannia. But when a gentleman's wager ends with a member stabbed to death, the victim's last words echo in the Lieutenant's head: that he would "soon right a great wrong from the past." Eric is certain that one of his fellow members is the murderer: but who? Captain Mortimer Wolf, the soldier's soldier thrice escaped from German custody? Second Lieutenant Oliver Saxon, the brilliant codebreaker? Or Captain Edward Aldershott, the steely club president whose Savile Row suits hide a frightening collision of mustard gas scars? Eric's investigation will draw him far from the marbled halls of the Britannia, to the shadowy remains of a dilapidated war hospital and the heroin dens of Limehouse. And as the facade of gentlemenhood cracks, Eric faces a Matryoshka doll of murder, vice, and secrets pointing not only to the officers of his own club but the very investigator assigned by Scotland Yard.

This was an engaging, cosy mystery with elements of politics thrown in. It is set in 1920s London, still recovering from WWI. It focuses on a group of ex-servicemen at their gentleman's club, Britannica. A murder/s, a cold case, race, PTSD, addiction, & womens rights all infringe on the plot as it unfolds.
This is the first in a series with Lieutenant Eric Peterkin. I can't wait for more from Christopher Huang.

I think I'm going to enjoy this. This decision is based on the fact that Eric Peterkin has a Usual Armchair at his gentleman's club. Lol, reminds me of A A Milne's extensive use of capitals.
Settling down with a cosy mystery is the best when it's raining and blowing a hooley out there 🌬

Excellent descriptions of settings and a good mystery, but I had trouble keeping the characters straight and I was kind of bored.

Read two books this weekend. Although very different (a murder mystery and a reflection on art and spirituality), both referenced the trauma of World War I. Huang‘s characters coped with shell shock and the effects of mustard gas and Madeleine L‘Engle‘s father was a WWI vet disabled from lung damage due to mustard gas. #NewYearSpecial @Andrew65

What an interesting mystery! In the style of a golden-age detective story but with some twists. The subject matter isn‘t light by any means, with many of the characters suffering from PTSD and other conditions stemming from their service in WWI, but it was well-plotted and written.

Kimzey Amazing basket! Who is the artist? 3y
bookwrm526 @Kimzey We saw it in the art museum in Richmond, VA. This is from the artist‘s website “Jeremy Frey is a Passamaquoddy basketweaver in Maine. He comes from a long line of native weavers. He specializes in ash fancy baskets, a traditional form of Wabanaki weaving.” 3y
Kimzey Thanks for the artist info. I‘m glad to know of this basket maker and his tradition. 3y
Kimzey Well, you inspired me to read the book. My last of 2021! I enjoyed it. 3y
bookwrm526 @Kimzey Excellent!! I really hope he writes another with the character. 3y

Glad I picked this up off my #TBR. Fascinating glimpse into English classism, white superiority,anti-Chinese or “Orientals” discrimination, Post WWI.Maimed men and the ravages of war explored as well. In one scene an artist paints wounded/disable war Vets to pull them out of their shadow world in an effort to render them visible to society. #discrimination #classism #WWIVets #artinspires #artforsocialchange #TBR #AxetheStacks

Catching up on my 2019 book posts: This is a good mystery with a new perspective. It is set in one of my favorite time periods (the interwar years).

This was a fantastic book! The plot kept me guessing and I couldn‘t put it down. I really loved having a Eurasian main character and I groaned in sympathy with some questions and comments Eric was subject to!

Sally refused to look at the camera for this 😹 Just finished this historical murder mystery and found it highly enjoyable. Somehow most of my books lately have been murders based around WWI, which I know very little about. This one had a really interesting take on shell shock, as it was known then.

Louise Have you read the Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear? The time period spans WWI and WWII, and they are excellent mystery/crime novels! (edited) 6y
brennahawleycraig @Louise I‘ve read the first two!! The third is waiting on my nightstand. She‘s a lot of fun! 6y
Louise Yes! I‘d love to meet Maisie for tea and a long walk! 💕 6y

Received book as Goodreads giveaway. An old timey murder mystery in a gentleman‘s club after the Great War. A little too many characters for me to keep track of at times but all in all a good book.

This is billed as a mystery but the parts I most enjoyed was the descriptions of the impact of war on soldiers, nurses and other healthcare workers. #24b4Monday #boutofbooks

I just wasn't able to continue this book despite the intriguing plot & great writing. It was painfully slow and I was overwhelmed with details to a point I think I was reading non-fiction. Hopefully I'll pick up this book again in future.
