Sanctuary | Judy Nunn
8 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
In Judy Nunn's latest compelling novel, compassion meets bigotry, hatred meets love, and ultimately despair meets hope on the windswept shores of Australia. On a barren island off the coast of Western Australia, a rickety wooden dinghy runs aground. Aboard are nine people who have no idea where they are. Strangers before the violent storm that tore their vessel apart, the instinct to survive has seen them bond during their days adrift on a vast and merciless ocean. Fate has cast them ashore with only one thing in common . . . fear. Rassen the doctor, Massoud the student, the child Hamid and the others all fear for their lives. But in their midst is Jalila, who appears to fear nothing. The beautiful young Yazidi woman is a mystery to them all. While they remain undiscovered on the deserted island, they dare to dream of a new life . . . But forty kilometres away on the mainland lies the tiny fishing port of Shoalhaven. Here everyone knows everyone, and everyone has their place. In Shoalhaven things never change. Until now . . .

Long time fascination, this is my first Judy Nunn novel. Im listening to this on audiobook as well as reading the ebook inbetween.
I recognize the narrator, John Derum's voice from Australian TV and/or radio. I understand it's set in Australia & written by an Australian author but Derum's voice feels strange to hear when I'm listenng to him read the voices for over 9 Middle Eastern characters in an Aussie accent.
Otherwise, I'm enjoying it so far.

ljuliel That‘s how I like reading my books if I can get ahold of the audio and kindle both. That way, I can read a bit, then listen a bit when I have other things to do. 5y
Curiouser_and_curiouser @ljuliel yeah, it's cool, I did that with the end of The Power of One because I loved the narrator's way of reading and his accent so much! He was brilliant! This book I would prefer to read the words alone as the aussie accent is throwing me off a bit. But I'll listen to the audiobook when I am on the move :) 5y
ljuliel That‘s another reason I like audiobooks. You get to hear lots of different accents , depending on where the book is set. 5y

Mehso-so

This book could have been edited more thoroughly. Although the story was quite good ( though not realistic) the writing was standard. First Judy Nunn I‘ve read and I‘ll go back for more but listening is likely the best option.

Pickpick

This book was a gift and I haven‘t read any other Judy Nunn novels. I enjoyed this story and would recommend it to others. It‘s a fictional recount of the arrival of a group of refugees at the Abrolhos Islands off the coast of Western Australia near Geraldton. It accurately depicts many of the places around Geraldton and Perth. The plight of refugees arriving in Australia was well represented. I think I‘ll read more Judy Nunn in the future.

BookwormDownUnder I have that one! Been meaning to read it. She wrote one about the Pilbara or Darwin that I loved. Can‘t remember which. She‘s quite good. 6y
TheLorax Funny, I was going to ask you if you wanted it. 6y

My first exposure to anything by Judy Nunn and it was a really fantastic read. I would recommend it to anyone who wishes to learn something about compassion toward refugees. It‘s especially relevant for Australian readers, who‘s shores are often approached by those who seek safety and refuge from their war-torn countries. 5 stars from me.

Nunn is a prolific #ozfiction author. She‘s also a well known actress (Ailsa from Home & Away). I had not read her before & only read this because it was chosen for my book club.
I was interested to see how the topic of refugees, set in my state of Western Australia, would be tackled by a ‘best selling‘ author. The first half of the book explored relatively interesting back-story of the refugees. The second half was a silly, implausible romance.

CarolynM I've always avoided her books because they looked like soap opera type sagas. Sounds like I made a good choice. Have you read any Di Morrissey? I've avoided her for the same reason. 6y
MrsMalaprop @CarolynM Lots of people love Nunn and a quick scan of Goodreads reveals how much love there is for this particular novel. A fellow bookclubber last night described her style as pedestrian, which is apt. No I haven‘t read any Di Morrissey. No need when there are too many authors I‘m dying to read/read more of 📚📚📚📚📚. 6y
TheCuriousHousecat 100% agree. 5y

This is our latest read for book club. Thinking it might be the first one I don‘t finish. I‘m finding it heavy going. I‘m not enjoying her writing style at all. She is very popular so glad lots of people like reading her. Just not for me. If this was a review I would have picked bail I think . Book club will be interesting I think. Love that I get to read books I would not normally read. However this is very hard for me. @MrsMalaprop

#HeyJune #Ifeelfine

I have a chesty cold and am definitely not feeling fine 🤧😪. However I‘m sure this hot toddy and some of my #currentread will change that.

Generally speaking I‘m not a whiskey drinker. I remember doing a tour of Bushmills Distillery in Ireland in my 20s and wanting to make sure I took advantage of my free sample. As I had no interest in straight whiskey I opted for the hot toddy. And boy did #Ifeelfine 😋😁🥃👍.

Cinfhen Sorry you‘re feeling bleh 😔but how‘s the book?!? 6y
MrsMalaprop @Cinfhen So far so good. I‘m about halfway through. I have to admit to a bias against Judy Nunn, but not because I‘ve actually read any! Just book snobbery really, due to her being a prolific, popular author. May have to eat my words....? 6y
Jeg Sorry to hear you are unwell @MrsMalaprop . I‘m waiting to read the book. I‘ve felt the same about reading her books. We shall see. Hope you are feeling better soon. Speaking of whiskey— on one of my earlier visits to Scotland I went to a distillery. Sampled a single malt and fell in love! 6y
