I. Loved. This. I‘ve seen reviews saying it‘s sexist, and in some ways it is. But it‘s very focused on consent, which is nice. And sometimes, it‘s nice to get lost in a fun, smutty book. Plus, I actually like the dystopian story of it! Aaaallll the spices for this one! 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

I didn‘t like the plot and was not drawn to the characters or the world building. I really disliked how gendered the roles in this post apocalyptic world were and how the female mc always needed protecting. But the sex scenes were good and I liked that consent was a big part of them. I also liked how the author played around with the dynamics of withholding and giving in/allowing.

I decided to focus on digital freebies with my August Must-Reads. I‘ve got:

• an early (and troublingly low-rated) dystopian by a writing duo getting lots of praise for their latest
• the second (I think) Peter Whimsey mystery
• a queer YA fantasy from my chunkster checklist
• a high-rated historical romance

effani I'll be interested to hear what you think of Beyond Shame - it wasn't for me, but I still want to read their later work. 4y
xicanti @effani I‘m not feeling too optimistic based on the gender dynamics you talked about in your review, but I‘ll still give it a go. 4y

This is a higher-heat romance than I normally like, so I was expecting it to be sexy, but I wasn't expecting it to be so sexist. In this world, men are dominant and women are submissive; men fight and women dance; men think about business and politics and women think about how to please the men.

But for all that, I found myself caught up in the world and the characters, and wondering where the overarching plot is going to go.

effani I suspect that the things I was annoyed by might have been influenced by the particular characters that this book focused on and might get more nuanced later in the series. I'll probably pick the next one up at some point, though I'm in no hurry. 4y

I follow the authors behind this pen name on Twitter and I‘m finally going to start their books. I was waiting until their series with mercenary librarians comes out but 🤷‍♀️

Eyelit Mercenary librarians?!? I‘m gonna want to read that when it comes out. 😁 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @Eyelit Right? I think it‘s the same universe as their other books but has different characters. 5y

Cripes.

I started this on holiday but it's taken 3 weeks to finish it because I can't read it in public. Blimey. And I'm still not sure that I liked it.

sprainedbrain Love this review because of the first word. 😂 8y

#riotgrams #bookishconfessions - I love reading steamy romances, but I can't handle talking about them in person. Someone asked about readalikes for 50 Shades at work last week, and I blushed so hard I could feel myself turning red as a lobster 🤗

Leelee08 Same😊 8y

There were some things I really enjoyed about this book: consent was a priority, sexuality was fluid and didn't "need" to be defined and it explored the importance and power of saying "no" as well as saying "yes."

However, I didn't love the writing or the plot. I didn't feel the connection between Jasper and Noelle.

I might try the next book in the series, but I'm not rushing to do so.

Loved this romance and will definitely be reading the whole series. Kit Rocha isn't afraid of writing things like polyamorous relationships and giving her heroines their chance to find what brings them pleasure. Along with some very steamy sex scenes, this was a book I could not stop reading.

I've been trying to not read multiple books at once, but having a mystery and a super steamy romance going is working out well and this series is super hot and good! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥#KitRocha #BeyondSeries

Couldn't even finish this. I love me a dystopian future novel, but this was just sex scenes strung together with spiderwebbing of plot and world-building.
