It is 1911, and Jean is about to join the mass strike at the Singer factory. For her, nothing will be the same again. Decades later, in Edinburgh, Connie sews coded moments of her life into a notebook, as her mother did before her. More than 100 years after his grandmother's sewing machine was made, Fred discovers a treasure trove of documents. His family history is laid out before him in a patchwork of unfamiliar handwriting and colorful seams. He starts to unpick the secrets of four generations, one stitch at a time.

Crazeedi I thought it was worth reading. I loved the description of the factory work(my first job was in a sewing factory!) I thought how the childess couple took in the pregnant woman and made her their daughter was very well done and woven into the story very well. Of course the names are escaping me right now, read it too long ago! Lol 😉 4y

Butterfinger I feel like I should have liked it. I don't understand why Jean had such a mystery about her. I've already forgotten what was in that envelope that was so important when she died. The ending was too neat. Jean's descendant finds Kathleen's descendant. 4y

Chrissyreadit I feel like this was what should be a character driven story written from a plot driven perspective so both felt flat to me. 4y

Crazeedi I enjoyed the book. Though keeping track of timeline and people was a bit frustrating. And the ending a bit abrupt. But overall just a glimpse of a sewing machine journey and how it was woven into the fabric of 2 family lines was cool 4y

megnews @Crazeedi I usually love these books. I recently read another that tracked two different families and it didn‘t work for me either. I think I prefer tracking one family. Easier to understand 4y

CoffeeNBooks I feel like the story was just really slow in unfolding, and it kept adding what seemed like irrelevant people/information, so it was hard to connect to so many different things going on. 4y

Readswithcoffee I liked it well enough. I was hoping that the note left on the bobbin was more dramatic. 4y

CogsOfEncouragement I thought this story was excellent, and gave it 5 stars. I was surprised there were so many bad reviews. I liked how the characters helped each other in such concrete ways. The sense of community, not only of what was made on the machine but how they had a garden out back and shared seeds and plants. I've lived in the same town for over forty years, you do end up meeting people in the same family you were once connected to in another way... 4y

CogsOfEncouragement ...people move away only to return after a few years. I interact with parents of the kids I used to help in some way years ago - they love me for the connection they only find out about twenty years later. I easily relate to these characters caring for each other as well as caring about the other's extended families they never met. I could also relate to having my grandmother and mother sew countless garments. I sew very little, and not well... 4y

CogsOfEncouragement ...but as I read I remembered sewing projects I had done years ago that I had completely forgotten about. There is something special about making a garment for someone, even if it is just a costume or part of a costume. Especially if they choose the pattern and the fabric. It is different from choosing something at the store. 4y

CogsOfEncouragement I liked that the author had a character create from sewing machines in a totally different way - by tearing the machines apart. Ellen, who turned out to be Jean's great-granddaughter connected to the machines in a different but amazing way. Jean made sure they worked, Ellen made beauty from them when they no longer did. Fred wanting to repair the machine and continue to use it, makes a great opposite/compliment in friendship (and more) to Ellen. 4y

megnews @CogsOfEncouragement I agree about the special connection to something homemade. I have an Easter dress and jacket my Gran made me. My two girls have worn it and so has my granddaughter. I hope even my great great kids will wear it. 4y

I think maybe I went into it with specific expectations from other similar books I‘ve read about something passed down through generations. I shouldn‘t have done that. So glad you liked it so much! Butterfinger I really loved this idea. As I said in my review, I do something similar in my journals for home and school. I'd like to think of them as primary documents. The sewing journal was special to the family. I get it. 4y

Chrissyreadit I really appreciated how she documented- and I do not think that was odd based on “books” kept in history I learned. 4y

Roary47 That was one of my favorite parts. You can go back and remember the work you did. Sort of like a portfolio. Maybe the prices as a record or a guideline for future clients on how much she should charge. 4y

Crazeedi I absolutely loved this idea. Wish I had kept a journal of everything I made and repaired over the years. I would have as many notebooks as Kathleen. I think it was just for her to have a memory of her work, and maybe a gift to the future generation 4y

Readswithcoffee It was a document of her life‘s work. It was about her and the people she touched along the way with her sewing. 4y

CogsOfEncouragement The machine, that she paid for herself, was a new start for Kathleen. I have never had a situation of paying for something with the work I did with the item I was paying for, but that is what Kathleen was doing. Once that machine was paid for, I can see why Kathleen would want to continue on with the journal of what was made on the machine. Pretty cool record of what she fixed or altered for longer use or what she created and for who. 4y

Butterfinger Maybe she left it as a lifeline to someone sympathetic. A way to ask for prayers. Kathleen reacted by building a business for herself. She was abandoned and this opened opportunities for her. Hey, while I am analyzing the story, I am finding a new appreciation. Kathleen's daughter then became a help to the pregnant nurse. Maybe the book was written to show a Pay It Forward theme. 4y

Chrissyreadit @Butterfinger good thoughts. I‘m not sure how I felt about the message on the bobbin. Maybe leaving an expression of anger towards the factory and marking it in some way. 4y

Roary47 I think she left the message because they were going to leave suddenly and this was the only way she could say goodbye. I‘d feel sad that I wasn‘t able to say goodbye. 4y

Crazeedi I think it was a message to the future owner, a piece of her left with the machine to say she was there and she was going into the unknown. Kinda like when you start to sew something it's an adventure into the unknown 4y

megnews @crazeedi I agree with you. Her life til now had been there. She took a risk that led to leaving. She wanted to leave a memorial that they had been there, that it meant something to her. 4y

Readswithcoffee I think it was the only way she had to express her anger and frustration with their situation. It was her way of saying that they mattered. 4y

CogsOfEncouragement Jean had touched many machines, making sure they worked properly before they were sent on to people who needed them to function well. Jean felt pretty alone at that time, leaving everyone she knew, and going with Donald to the unknown. It makes sense to want to make a connection with someone in any way possible. Why not connect with the person she made sure this machine was going to perform for? 4y

CogsOfEncouragement Kathleen in strengthened by the note during a low point in her life. I think I would have appreciated the message no matter what season of life I was in. A secret message like that makes me think of the best in humanity. Caring connection between strangers, trusting that the person in possession of the machine would empathize. 4y

megnews @CogsOfEncouragement I agree. Though I don‘t have a connection to sewing machines, I can see how excited I would be to open a product and find a message from the person who made it. It would feel like a connection and I would want to solve the mystery of who left it. 4y

Butterfinger I wish I could remember names after I read a book. My favorite timeline was the strike and then the war. Was it Jean? And how she took control of her own life and stood up to her father. I don't understand why she put the note on the bobbin. 4y

Butterfinger My least favorite was the most recent. I understand how he would appreciate the notes left from his grandmother, and I would love to have something similar from my own grandmother. She made my mom's wedding dress, but it didn't make a memorable story. 4y

Roary47 I‘m not sure I liked one more than the other. I‘m also bad with names. I think I liked the grandson the best because he was doing the uncovering. I don‘t feel I didn‘t like any view. 4y

Maybe I have an unpopular opinion but I liked the story. It is a bit confusing keeping track of characters, but the story comes together at the end. The only thing is that the ending seems abrupt. #OverbookedClub @megnews @sblbooks #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

This story is heartwarming. While it has historical events it is more about the internal story and family mystery. It was predictable for me. It jumps back and forth through time which is not something I normally enjoy, but it was done well. Read for #overbookedclub

I always say that I keep my planners (for personal and professional use) to one day become primary documents. I think that is the idea from this book, but I realize only families will care about the history found in these everyday items or very serious minded historians. Outsiders will find these documents boring.

I really wanted to like this book, but I just didn't connect with the characters and their storylines. The only ones I was really interested in were Jean and Donald. So, I skipped most of the chapters about the other characters until closer to the end of the book. I see how it all connected back together at the end, though.

Family secrets across multiple timelines linked by 1 object. Usually a recipe for success for me. At 60% I almost posted “did I miss something? Is anyone else confused?” I gave this 3 stars. There‘s nothing particularly wrong with it. But I‘m giving it a so-so. It‘s not a book I‘d rave about. Maybe it took too long to come together. Chrissyreadit Yes!!! That is exactly how I felt. The only real reason I did not give it a so so was because I cried during a specific section and believe in more credit if a book elicits an emotional response. But this is not a book I would share or specifically recommend. 4y

Deblovestoread @Chrissyreadit @megnews I am at 32% and am pulling the plug. Usually at this point in the story I‘m invested in at least one of the characters or am interested enough in the plot to know what happens next but I‘m confused and not that interested. Plus I am listening through Chirp for the first time and it doesn‘t seem to play well with my phone. 4y

This #overbookedclub choice was not my favorite. For me it was a slow start and I really did not become invested in the characters until the last third of the book. Im still giving it a pick because it was interesting, and I enjoyed getting a view of life in Scotland during these times.

Roary47 My mom taught me to sew. She used to make my Halloween costumes. Made my prom and wedding dress. 4y

megnews @Roary47 my Gran tried to teach me and we did a short sewing unit in home ec but the machine and I seemed to fight. 😂 my other grandma knit and crocheted. She also made some beautiful quilts. 4y

rubyslippersreads My story is very similar to @megnews 😊 I can‘t sew, but my mother made me beautiful clothes and knit me beautiful sweaters. And both grandmas crocheted lovely afghans. 4y

CoffeeNBooks I like to sew, so I was very curious about this book. My mom tried to teach me to sew, but I wasn't really interested until I was in graduate school and wanted a new dress. I took fabric I already had, bought a pattern, and taught myself how to sew. I took a quilting class after that, and have made several quilts over the years. I also cross-stitch. I never quite figured out how to knit or crochet very well. 4y

Butterfinger My Nanny had an antique sewing machine that was passed through the family. She sewed everything. Whenever we needed anything for school - Pioneer Day comes to mind. She made my veil for my wedding. I'm starting to cry. I miss her so much. 4y

Butterfinger She also crocheted, I never could get the hang of it. My next door neighbor taught me to knit and I flew with it. 4y

Crazeedi My mother sewed for 4 daughters, made all our clothes, wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses. I took home ec for 6 years in high school. Then used my skills as a mother to sew for my girls, and then as a professional seamstress for several years. My grandmother was a quilter, but she did all her stitching by hand. My great grandfather was a tailor, made mens suits. I have a long heritage of sewing. 4y

Deblovestoread I first started sewing in Home Ec...made hot pants and a peasant blouse. After that I sewed periodically until my I started sewing dresses for my daughter. I found my real passion in 2000 taking a quilt class with a friend. I also do cross stitch, embroidery and can crochet. My grandmother taught me embroidery. 4y

Readswithcoffee I took Home Ec in seventh grade and learned to sew a little bit. Taught myself from that point, but only sew well enough to make costumes and very simple skirts. I owned the same sewing machine (a used trade-in) for decades. It was SO HEAVY. Finally bought a new one a few years ago. 4y

CogsOfEncouragement My mom made most of my clothes when I was little. Fewer as I got older, but still quite a few. We spent a lot of time in the fabric store designing outfits. She made my prom dresses, and my wedding dress too. 4y

CogsOfEncouragement I learned to sew in jr. high home ec. I do not consider myself good at it, or think I have sewn all that much. Since I started reading though, a bunch of memories came back to me about the things I have made over the years. It is actually more than I realized and having the experience helps me visualize the characters at their machines more easily. 4y

Debdeb I saw it recommended on a Facebook book club ... I‘m a sew-er which drew me to it ... definitely recommend it but have a tissue ready for the last couple chapters 5y

This is a lovely, gentle read with some history thrown in about the Singer sewing machine factory which used to be in Clydebank, Scotland. It‘s a multi timeline tale, all of which are connected in some way. I really enjoyed it.
