The Disappeared
The Disappeared | C. J. Box
9 posts | 9 read | 3 to read
Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett has two lethal cases to contend with in the electrifying new novel from #1 New York Times-bestselling author C. J. Box. Wyoming's new governor isn't sure what to make of Joe Pickett, but he has a job for him that is extremely delicate. A prominent female British executive never came home from the high-end guest ranch she was visiting, and the British Embassy is pressing hard. Pickett knows that happens sometimes--these ranches are stocked with handsome young cowboys, and "ranch romances" aren't uncommon. But no sign of her months after she vanished? That suggests something else. At the same time, his friend Nate Romanowski has asked Joe to intervene with the feds on behalf of falconers who can no longer hunt with eagles even though their permits are in order. Who is blocking the falconers and why? The more he investigates both cases, the more someone wants him to go away. Is it because of the missing woman or because he's become Nate's advocate? Or are they somehow connected? The answers, when they come, will be even worse than he'd imagined.

Finished the 18th installment of the Joe Pickett series and these books just get better and better. This one has several different subplots that creep along toward connecting. I love Pickett‘s family and his friends, especially his now-adult daughter Sheridan. The bad guys are really really bad in here, and the snowy, wintery weather and terrain is fun to read about while it‘s 70 degrees and perfect outside. #FabulousFebruary

First book I have read in this series, and I would happily read another. The main character, Joe, is a forest ranger trying to solve a missing person's case in a small town. The story was fast paced and the characters were interesting. First book of 2024!

Another good installation from the Joe Pickett series. I feel like I qualify these every time I review them, but I still continue to enjoy them. They can be a little predictable but they are certainly fun to read and I will keep plugging along.

Although I loved the setting, the description of the land with vast and wondrous beauty, interesting characters; I found this story lagging along with no resolution to all who seemed to have disappeared. This story put me to sleep😴 even JuneBug dozed on this story.

Finished this book today and loved it! I liked the interesting twist that this book uses and also the location. Maybe not in winter, though. Sounds a bit too cold and snowy in Wyoming.

Excellent addition to the Joe Pickett series. The new governor wants Joe to track down a missing wealthy British woman, his friend Nate needs a favor, and his daughter is grown up and working at the ranch where he is looking for the missing woman. Box tells an engaging and fast paced story, ties everything together and manages to wrap in some timely issues. When a new CJ Box novel comes out, it always moves to the top of my TBR.

So dig getting lost in Joe and Nate‘s world again. Nate Romanowski is to Joe Pickett as Leonard Pine is to Hap Collins, as Joe Pike is to Elvis Cole. Series detectives need a good bud, who‘ll go that one step further. Wonder if this dynamic goes across the fence to urban fantasy? Wonder why these are all dudes I‘m talking about? Do women detectives also have this kind of sidekick/friend? I guess in fantasy-fantasy, animals often fill this role.

readinginthedark 🤔Yeah, I don‘t think female detectives usually have another female as their back-up. It‘s generally an animal or a male...unless you‘re Jessica Jones. 😆 7y
