River Thieves
River Thieves | Michael Crummey
7 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
In elegant, sensual prose, Michael Crummey crafts a haunting tale set in Newfoundland at the turn of the 19th century. A richly imagined story about love, loss and the heartbreaking compromisesboth personal and politicalthat undermine lives, River Thieves is a masterful debut novel. Published in Canada and the United States, it joins a wave of classic literature from eastern Canada, including the works of Alistair MacLeod, Wayne Johnston and David Adams Richards, while resonating at times with the spirit of Charles Fraziers Cold Mountain and Cormac McCarthys Border Trilogy. An enthralling story of passion and suspense, River Thieves captures both the vast sweep of history and the intimate lives of a deeply emotional and complex cast of characters caught in its wake.

A beautifully written historical fiction story set in early 19th century Newfoundland. Eye-opening portrait of a world where the First Nations are in a fight to survive the encroachment on their lands by British soldiers and colonists.

So good! 19th century Newfoundland is really his wheelhouse and I loved this book too. So much about his storytelling is what he doesn‘t say

Kindle deal alert: I was reading the blurb and thinking, “Wow, this sounds great!” Only to see I‘d already purchased it. 😏 That is the problem with e-books hidden away from sight.

Penny_LiteraryHoarders It can be a little ridiculous at times. Oh?! I already have this one?! Oops here's another copy/version to go with it then. 😘😘 5y
TrishB Happened to me many a time! 😁😁 5y

underthebelljar I‘m just grateful Amazon has that feature otherwise I would have bought many duplicates 🙈 5y
Susannah @BookishJess ME TOO, though, when new editions are put out, they aren‘t always recognized as dupes by Amazon, which is why I have two copies of Gone with the Wind on my Kindle. 🤦‍♀️ Nevertheless, I‘m glad it‘s only happened a couple of times. 5y

Someone didn't approve of my taking a picture of my pick for #theriver!

I figured that a Canadian song should pair with a Canadian book. This one is from Michael Crummey, set around the Bay and River of Exploits in Newfoundland. Adventure and intrigue, colonist and aboriginal relations, history and family.

#lyricalapril @Cinfhen

Cinfhen Love your book choice but I'm pretty sure Bruce Springsteen is a good ole Jersey boy 😉😜😂😎 8y

TheKidUpstairs @Cinfhen ha! I was thinking the Joni Mitchell song, didn't even think about Bruce (sorry, Mr. Springsteen) 8y
Cinfhen Haha, I'm sure Bruce is happy to share the spotlight with Joni 😍😍 8y
