Zombies have infested a fallen America. A young girl named Temple is on the run. Haunted by her past and pursued by a killer, Temple is surrounded by death and danger, hoping to be set free. For twenty-five years, civilization has survived in meager enclaves, guarded against a plague of the dead. Temple wanders this blighted landscape, keeping to herself and keeping her demons inside her heart. She can't remember a time before the zombies, but she does remember an old man who took her in and the younger brother she cared for until the tragedy that set her on a personal journey toward redemption. Moving back and forth between the insulated remnants of society and the brutal frontier beyond, Temple must decide where ultimately to make a home and find the salvation she seeks.

I love horror & zombies!
1. I have a hard time picking my favorite, but I‘ll go with The Reapers are the Angels by Alden Bell. Very existentialist!
2. Just one? 28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead, The Dead Don‘t Die, Train to Busan, Warm Bodies, Juan of the Dead, Zombieland, Little Monsters, Reanimator (hon. mention to Girl with All the Gifts and WWZ-but the books were better!)
3. Raising Stony Mayhall and eager to try Zone One by Colson Whitehead!

Chili Omg! I Love Reanimator!! 4y
Readergrrl @TheNeverendingTBR Sequel? No!!! I now have my latest addition to my own never-ending TBR!!! How did I miss that there was a sequel?!?! 4y
TheNeverendingTBR @Readergrrl Yes, the second book of this unfinished trilogy is also great but the third book won't be happening because Alden Bell can't find a publisher for it and the last time he tried was like nearly a decade ago. Sad that it isn't happening. I've tagged the third book which isn't coming 😏 4y
Readergrrl @Chili Yes!!! Great movie! Just talking about it makes me want to see it again! 4y
Readergrrl @TheNeverendingTBR I put Exit Kingdom on my wish list!!! Sounds great! It really is too bad that Bell can‘t get a publisher. I‘d heard something about him having difficulty with The Reapers Are the Angels, but so long ago that I don‘t remember specifics. I‘ll keep my fingers crossed regardless. 4y

1.) I'd say the Loch Ness Monster, the pictures took of it could easily be fakes but it's funny because it also looks like a Plesiosaurus in those pictures - so you never know! 😋🤷‍♂️

2.) I'm happy that I made some decent progress on my current read, it's been a crazy week so far and not found much concentration! 😏

A quick zombie read very much about holding on to your humanity, retaining some sense of honor & perspective in the midst of unspeakable loss & horror. The story follows a young girl named Temple who is wandering across the country from enclave to enclave until she meets someone she can help...which she does while trying to stay one step ahead of the zombies & something worse. Temple is a dynamic, interesting character & I enjoyed the book.

Mehso-so

I wanted a bleak zombie novel, and that is what I got. In that sense, I don't hate it. That said I can't believe the author, editor, or pre-readers spent 10 seconds between them researching ANYTHING. I couldn't go a page without being pulled out if the story by things that simply don't work the way the author described them. Most frustrating "good book" ever.

KathyWheeler I have always loved the title of this book but haven‘t read it yet. 5y
Exbrarian @KathyWheeler It has excellent prose, a solid plot, and there is plenty to like. I am intentionally withholding my many criticisms because I don't want to ruin the book for those who won't notice or care about the things I find irksome. 5y

5 out of 5 stars -This is a gruesome and beautiful book. This allegorical tale of a 15-year-old girl wandering a barren wasteland should not be beautiful, because she's fighting off zombies and a guy who's dead set on executing her. But it is. The writing is lush and gorgeous, the kind that makes you want to sink down and roll around in it until some small part of it is absorbed into your skin.

Reggie When I‘m planning a vacation, always in the back of my mind is Niagara Falls, for Temple. This book was such a surprise for me. One of my favorite zombie books. 6y
MrsGagnonreads2024 @Reggie I read it in 2.5 hours lol yes that would be perfect for her 6y

Book mail!

I had to complete my hardcover collection of LOTR, and I found this lovely edition on thriftbooks... so naturally I needed to order a couple more books to get free shipping. 😂

I decided on some scary stuff for my fall reading. 👻 🎃

quietjenn Reapers is so good! 7y
Tamra That "free" shipping gets me every time. ? 7y
Dogearedcopy I *love* 'The Reapers are the Angels'! I listened to the audio (narrated by Tai Sammons), but bought the book so I could highlight passages. So... lyrical/poetic! I ended up pretty much highlighting the whole thing! 7y

#diamonds (in the rough? feel the stretch) Temple, a girl much older than her 15 years suggests, struggles in a post apocalyptic world. She's kickass and smart, she just doesn't know it. You kinda wanna shake her and tell her to give herself a break, that she's deserving of her own love. This book is No Country For Old Men meets zombies. Internal struggle paired with lots of action, I was surprised how good this book turned out to be.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Always thought this was such an eerie title. 8y

This was a well done, literary take on the zombie novel. Temple is a 15 year old girl traveling an America that has been battling a zombie problem for 25 years. However, this book is less about the zombies and more about the Human Condition and finding beauty & purpose in a world that seems to have none. There is a fair amount of violence and gore though, just FYI. Even if you think you don't like zombie /dystopian novels, give this one a try.

The Reapers Are the Angels is the zombie novel I wish got all the attention. It's a moving, violent, philosophical, zombie road novel with an incredible voice to be exact. It did win ALA's Alex Award, but--at least judging the number of GR ratings compared to other zombie novels--it deserves sooooo much more recognition. #AllHallowsRead

This book about a 15 year old girl living in a worlds filled with meatbags (zombies) has only learned to live by a kill-or-be-killed philosophy. Always alert to the dangers around her, Temple can still find beauty in a ruined world. I never knew a zombie novel could move me into crying buckets. An amazing read. #recommendsday

Book Featuring the Day of the Dead: "TRATA" is a beautifully written novel in which a young woman/girl treks across a gruesomely stark landscape of a near future populated by zombies. The writing is stunningly elegant and mesmerizing, the audio (narrated by Tai Sammons) hypnotic. #AllHallowsRead

Dogearedcopy @LitHousewife I know you're not really into the whole zombie sub- genre of horror; but I really think you would love this one! It's more like lit-Fic; and the writing is so amazingly, for lack of a better word, beautiful! Also, it's worth mentioning that this is one of @Guildedearlobe 's titles in his #audiobookpantheon 🙂 8y

This gruesome, beautiful post-apocalyptic western follows a 15-year-old girl named Temple who wanders the wasteland. Her encounters with other survivors include a family wasting away in their elegant mansion, a band of vicious mutants, and a mute, helpless man. And zombies! Did I mention there are zombies? :D

The writing is absolutely gorgeous, and this is one of my favorites in the literary horror genre. (Also adult fiction, despite her age.)

Awesome book about the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse. Like most zombie books this really isn't about the zombies, the undead are just a framing device to discuss grief and how we deal with loss. Great, intense, quick read.
