Was good until he started talking about visiting "child whore houses" with friends in Bangkok! I do see he possibly was a very sick individual!

quote

Travels | Michael Crichton

Often I feel I go to some distant region of the world to be reminded of who I really am. There is no mystery about why this should be so. Stripped of your ordinary surroundings, your friends, your daily routines, your refrigerator full of your food, your closet full of your clothes—with all this taken away, you are forced into direct experience. Such direct experience inevitably makes you aware of who it is that is having the experience.

quote

If you‘re a writer, the assimilation of important experiences almost obliges you to write about them. Writing is how you make the experience your own, how you explore what it means to you, how you come to possess it, and ultimately release it.

For one thing, when we take responsibility for a situation, we also take control of it. We are less frightened and more practical. We are better able to focus on what we can do now to ameliorate the illness, and to assist healing.

Preparing for my week in Norwich 😁 I know that for a lot of people the suitcases would be the other way round, but I tend to over-pack clothes and toiletries!

I‘ve heard there are LOADS of bookshops and charity shops in Norwich and I can‘t wait 💸💸💸

TrishB Enjoy 👍🏻 7y

The best doctors found a middle position where they were neither overwhelmed by their feelings nor estranged from them. That was the most difficult position of all, and the precise balance — neither too detached nor too caring — was something few learned.

stargazerblue49 The first few chapters of that book made the first year of medical school a lot more bearable. And got me off on a Michael Crichton kick for the rest of the year 😬 8y

I gave it 4 hours. While the narrator was talented, I do not care for Michael Crichton not do I want to know any more about his life. I leave this audiobook certain that Crichton thought a lot of himself. I think Hollywood ruined him. #ArmchairAudies category complete. This is not the winner.

skrishna I loved his fiction but I couldn't get through this book either. 9y
AvidReader25 I wasn't a fan either. Too much self indulgent navel gazing. 9y
LitHousewife @skrishna @Avidreader25 I am glad not to be alone. Far from the best introduction to his work. 9y

An hour in to this audiobook. It was never a consideration, but I will not be donating my body to science. Once off the topic of human dissection, my experiences improved. Narrator Lane performs pot smoking admirably. I'll continue listening.

Imlostinbooks Interesting. Now I want to know what it says since I'm wanting to donate mine to fibromyalgia research. 9y

This is my last #ArmchairAudies listen in the Autobiography/Memoir category. I have absolutely no expectations, but the prospect of a nearly 16 hour listen right now is not necessarily appealing. Hoping for a pleasant surprise from Crichton and new to me narrator Christopher Lane.

BethsBookBlog You totally turned me on to audiobooks! This year I took a new job an hour away and they are life savers!! 9y
bookwormkara What did you think? 9y
LitHousewife @BethsBookBlog I'm so glad! What's been your favorite audiobook so far? 9y
LitHousewife @bookwormkara So far it's been discussing his life as a medical student. No traveling yet. The jury is still out. The narrator is good, though. 9y
BethsBookBlog @LitHousewife I loved a lot of them but I particularly loved ECHO for audio and EDGE OF LOST because it's hard to do accents well! Z right now is done well, too! 9y
