Try Hard: Tales from the Life of a Needy Overachiever (Extra Sass Edition)
Try Hard: Tales from the Life of a Needy Overachiever (Extra Sass Edition) | Em Rusciano
5 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
The bestselling, hilarious memoir from one of Australias most adored performers and host of breakfast radio on Sydneys 2DayFM with Harley Breen Funny, feisty and fabulous, Em Ruscianos insights into her world of mayhem, marriage and motherhood are a laugh-out-loud, cry-out-loud balm for the soul. From her exploits at the Miss Sheila Fancypants School of Dance and her efforts to secure a solo at her end-of-year performance, to embracing the spotlight as an Australian Idol contestant and her deep and abiding love for John Farnham, Em Rusciano is a self-confessed bottomless pit of anxiety with a taste for glitter. And behind the stage make-up Em is an overachiever of epic proportions, camp to the core and fiercely maternal. She has all the insecurities of a person who spends their nights racked with self-doubt and all the confidence of a woman who can walk out onto a stage in front of a sold-out theatre and absolutely slay the crowd. Em has an army of gay men she adores, tells the best dirty jokes and loves those closest to her ferociously. When the chips are down you definitely want her by your side. This all-singing, all-dancing, all-emoting, leopard-print clad warrior is fearless, fabulous and pants-wettingly funny. Her words on the page are silly and sacred, bawdy and heartfelt. The stuff of life. Try Hard is her story. Because she is. And she does.

Ahh! Went with my Mum to Em Rusciano‘s Rage & Rainbows show... brilliant night, about a wide range of topics - including the female tendency to swallow rage - and how this is a form of self harm... but she had us singing along to RAGE and it is a TUNE (recommend a listen on Spotify)

Lizpixie I love her! I saw her on The Project last week talking about the show, it looked fabulous. And who doesn‘t love a unicorn named Gary!🦄 5y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Lizpixie, she‘s brilliant! Went to her show with my Mum - we both had a great time ☺️ 5y

I have worked out why I fail reading challenges. Ok, I already knew it was because I join too many. But I made a TBR-2019 shelf on Goodreads and put in all the books I know I'll use for challenges + some leftovers from 2018 + my current library books.

I reached a total of 118 books (+8 currently reading). 😐

Add upcoming group reads, new releases, and impulse grabs at the library etc.
I'm doomed!
🤣

julesG Don't worry about it. Really. There are worse things than failing a book/reading challenge. 6y
Literary_Siren I fail them them because I‘m a mood reader. I tried to do a BoTM challenge around this time last year because I have a whole shelf full of them and hadn‘t read a single one. I think I read about 6 or 7 of them before I got tired of it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
JuliaTheBookNerd As long as you have fun trying 🤷🏻‍♀️ why not fail spectacularly with an unattainable goal 😉 6y

Leniverse @julesG @Literary_Siren @JuliaTheBookNerd Failing spectacularly appeals to me. And the reading challenges help push me to read more and better. So yes, having deemed my task impossible I shall now venture intrepidly forth. 😂 6y

AmyG Reading is reading. I find it fun to set up challenges (I only do one). At least you have high goals!! It‘s books.....just have fun. 6y
CouronneDhiver Maybe it‘s more about the journey than the finish line? I refuse to do challenges because I know myself. The minute reading feels like an assignment, I lose my motivation. 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego It's not a failure. You don't have to follow any set plans. As long as you're reading, and enjoying it that's all that matters. You can set goals, but you shouldn't get too hung up if you can't meet them always. C'est la vie 😊... I never join challenges cuz I'm too moody of a reader. 6y
Bklover @AmyG I‘m only doing one challenge this year too. I‘m doing #Booked2019. Which one are you doing? 6y
AmyG I am doing the same @Bklover and only doing this one. 6y
Leniverse @AmyG @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I enjoy the planning stage a lot. List making. Exploring options. Discovering new books and authors. I guess that‘s why I join so many challenges. 😂 6y
Leniverse @CouronneDhiver Sometimes it‘s definitely about the journey. I‘ve been on a journey to read every country in the world for a couple of years now. As long as I can manage ten new countries each year, I consider it a success. 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego That's fair & fun! Just don't beat yourself up if you don't meet your targets. 😊 6y

Got the book at the concert!
(But accidentally buried it under a pile of clean washing)

I bought my Mum tickets to her show, Evil Queen, for Christmas because she adores her and is forever sending me links to her interviews ☺️.

I get a bit nervous when Disney Princesses are the punchlines to jokes but this was brilliant! And it wasn‘t all Disney bashing - she touched on all number of subjects from her miscarriage to different words people use to talk about their periods... I‘ve come away a big fan (with a signed copy of this book)
