“I know some Big Words,
I'll teach them to you.“

This piece of literature is written in prose and can be counted as realistic fiction and it is great for high-order thinking ESL students who need big vocabulary words to retain in their everyday development. Jamie Lee Curtis has written multiple picture books for children, yet this one captured my eye because of the message behind it.

Follow up in the comments to read the rest!!

Big Words for Little People is a fun RF book to use as both a RA and PR. This book can enhance students‘ vocabulary because it is full of new big words! After performing a RA or having PR, students can pair up and use this synonym sheet (https://www.lessonplanet.com/teachers/big-words-for-little-people)to compare the words within the book, to words they previously knew; which will have them activate their background knowledge.

OliviaBuck UDL 2.1- clarify vocabulary and symbols works well with this book because students are clarifying the vocabulary terms by reading the book and completing the synonym sheet. EL strategy 11- place language in meaningful context also works well with this book. #ucflae3414sp21 4y

“I know some Big Words. I‘ll teach them to you. Although you are small, you can use Big Words too.” The New York Times best-selling team of Curtis and Cornell have brought us an RF, eye-catching, picture book that celebrates words; teaching kids that they shouldn‘t be afraid of big words. The illustrations perfectly align with the vocabulary to help emerging readers comprehend what is going on while portraying events that students can relate to.

TabathaA Best as a RA, using UDL principle 2.1 (clarify vocabulary and symbols), and EL 5 & 17 (teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts and provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language, and facial expressions). 4y
TabathaA There are several resources available at TeachingBooks (https://www.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?tid=14503) including a story map, activities, and a teacher guide. AlexRobinson I saw a few of our peers read this for their teach live presentations and I fell in love with it each time I heard it! Big Words for Little People by Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell promotes advanced vocabulary and opens up new doors for children. The illustrations help paint a picture that is relatable for kids to help them understand. UDL 2.1 and 3.3 are in this book because if helps clarify vocabulary and students visualize so they can better comprehend the text. https://youtu.be/S1y_ppKRXf8 is a terrific video of Jamie Lee Curtis speaking about her book.

Written by Jamie Lee Curtis and Illustrated by Laura Cornell. This RF selection teaches young children in a story-telling and rhyming fashion. The story illuminates big words that children may hear but not quite understand in everyday conversations. Each page consists of its own story with one or two “big“ words. #ucflae3414su20

Ameyer32 The words range from inappropriate to stupendous and near the end the story speaks of “big“ words that are not quite that big but rather have a big meaning. Those words being respect, family and love. This book could be RA to children to boost their vocabulary while being silly.

Ameyer32 A great UDL stratagy would be 2.1 which is to clarify the vocabulary. Make vocabulary pictures to go along with the text to help the students to identify the “big words“.
A great EL stratagy would be number 6, continually monitor students‘ comprehension by asking questions before during and after the reading and making sure to give proper wait time to allow for response.

JoslynB I really like your comment about being “silly“ while engaging students with this. The book sounds like it would be a great way to be expressive when pronouncing those big words. It is a good review and has given me new ideas and thoughts to work with. 👍 4y
Nkaufmann Making vocabulary pictures to go along with the text is a great idea! Especially for those who are visual learners and ELLs as this will advance their vocabulary and in turn, allow for them to get a better understanding of the text. I also think that continually asking questions before, during, and after reading is another great way to ensure that the students are listening and comprehending. Great job! 4y
RamzieM I totally agree with you on your UDL choice! Clarifying the vocabulary and teaching the students these new “big” words is the best way to learn through this book. 4y
DrSpalding I love the videos of the authors reading their own books. That is an excellent choice. You expanded on the universal design and English learner strategy but need to identify the numbers that coincide with them. 4y

Big Words for Little People by Jamie Lee Curtis is a fictional text. This book is great for primary grades because it is a fun way to educate them on more complex words. This book allows for students to see just how fun it is to be able to use big words. A few large words taught included “consequence”, “stupendous”, and “privacy.” An ESOL strategy I would use for this book would be to simplify my speech by making it slower and redundant.

Kcallihan The words in this book are hard even for native speakers, so slowing down my speech could allow for ESOL students to fully comprehend what I am saying. Big Words for Little People (RF) is a great book to use as an interactive RA. This book travels through a series of big words and explains what each of them mean through little real life incidents. Jamie Lee Curtis does a great job with connecting strong vocabulary words like cooperate, respect, considerate and patience to life lessons that children need to know. The book takes you through things that happen as a family.

taywise393 Then at the end ties it together with how love is the most important word of them all. When I read this to my class I will connect it to this vocabulary lesson plan. https://www.education.com/lesson-plan/el-support-lesson-learning-new-vocabulary/ When a student is unfamiliar with a word they write it down and save it for the lesson plan. 6y
taywise393 UDL 2.1 fits with this book because of the vocabulary. ESOL strategies 5 and 14 would be good with this book. For ELL students or struggling readers context clues in this book are very helpful to describe the unfamiliar and big words.

DrSpalding Excellent book selection! Check your genre. If it were NF, the kids in the story would be real! What genre do you think it is now? Life‘s little incidents was a great way to describe this book! 6y
taywise393 Realistic fiction? 6y

Big Words for Little People by Jamie Lee Curtis a (RF) book that takes you through using some big words in the proper way! Words include “Privacy”, “impossible”, consequence”, and “cooperate”! This would be a great (RA) book to introduce a vocabulary routine, or a phonics lesson on sounding out “big” words. This is a great book to use with EL students by (11) placing language in a meaningful context.

KaitlynN A UDL principal that this book helps satisfy is (2.1) clarify vocabulary and symbols. Big Words for Little People helps make meaningful connections from sophisticated vocabulary to everyday situations. (https://www.lessonplanet.com/teachers/big-words-for-little-people) is a resource that you have to pay for, but it is something that would be very easy to recreate for free. It is a worksheet that allow students to match synonyms. #ucflae3414sp18 (edited) 7y
WendyV I was interested in this book too after seeing it in class. I really like your suggestion on how you would use this book in the classroom, especially your EL strategy. 7y
DrSpalding Yes, this is an excellent example of realistic fiction. The higher level vocabulary works beautifully with the UDL principle you selected. Way to go! 7y
morganhillman I definitely need to go get this for my classroom library! Like you said, it would be a fantastic book for EL students to learn some harder vocabulary! The worksheet seems like an awesome idea so the students could check their progress and see if they can remember some of the new vocabulary they just learned by reading the book! 7y
