Travel as a Political Act
Travel as a Political Act | Rick Steves
8 posts | 7 read | 8 to read
Change the world one trip at a time. In this illuminating collection of stories and lessons from the road, acclaimed travel writer Rick Steves shares a powerful message that resonates now more than ever. With the world facing divisive and often frightening events, from Trump, Brexit, and Erdogan, to climate change, nativism, and populism, there's never been a more important time to travel. Rick believes the risks of travel are widely exaggerated, and that fear is for people who don't get out much. After years of living out of a suitcase, he still marvels at how different cultures find different truths to be self-evident. By sharing his experiences from Europe, Central America, Asia, and the Middle East, Rick shows how we can learn more about own country by viewing it from afar. With gripping stories from Rick's decades of exploration, this fully revised edition of Travel as a Political Act is an antidote to the current climate of xenophobia. When we travel thoughtfully, we bring back the most beautiful souvenir of all: a broader perspective on the world that we all call home. All royalties from the sale of Travel as a Political Act are donated to support the work of Bread for the World, a non-partisan organization working to end hunger at home and abroad.

Read about 7 hours so far for #33by33. Started tackling Grapes of Wrath and did some #audiopuzzling with the tagged book to finish my puzzle of the Trevi fountain. Will make much more reading progress in the next few days. @MatchlessMarie

MatchlessMarie I love #AudioPuzzling! And you coffee is gorgeous. (edited) 3y

I miss being able to travel more easily. Scheduling a hibernation vacation for July meant asking how far I could travel comfortably without needing a pit stop. 🤔 I‘m hoping the answer is 3.5 hours.

I‘ve encountered people who didn‘t like to travel, felt no need to visit other places. I‘m the opposite. I‘d be happy to spend a whole lot more time traveling, staying in new places for an extended visit. Someday....

March / April TBR. Almost finished with the tagged read. It‘s very thought-provoking and makes me want to travel to Morocco, Iran, Palestine... well, everywhere! ✈️

Redwritinghood @Lindy Gosh that sounds delicious. Love those spices and it sounds like it would be great for Christmas. Thanks. 6y
Lindy @batsy @Redwritinghood Thanks. I bake this at least once a year because it‘s a favourite. I was asked to bring something baked to the party and I knew there would be figgy pudding (set on fire) so I chose to make this not-very-sweet cake that‘s traditionally served without icing. It was a hit. ☺️ 6y

tpixie @ferskner hoping to go Sept 2019. I just should‘ve gone back in high school or college when I was fluent in French! In Dec heading to Niagra Falls Ontario- my son is dancing in a Christmas dance/ ice Capades show at the Fallsview Casino there! 6y
ferskner @tpixie those both sound like awesome trips! I didn't have my passport with me when I went to Niagra Falls (spur of the moment) and I've always regretted not seeing it from the Canadian side. 6y
tpixie @ferskner ah snap! I went as a young child before we needed passports, but barely remember it. I accidentally let my passport lapse, so luckily I got a new one in time to go see my son & the sites! 6y

I've barely begun, but this book has already brought me to happy and sad tears as I contemplated our giant world and my potential place in it. Also, this is the first time in days the air quality has been okay enough to spend a few minutes outside!

Rick Steve's provided a unique way of looking at travel and taking the fear out of exploring new cultures. He put an interesting spin on the success of European issues that Americans struggle with. I am ready to embrace traveling with an open mind. @sunflowers @tpixie
