Absolutely Normal Chaos
Absolutely Normal Chaos | Sharon Creech
7 posts | 13 read | 5 to read
Mary Lou Finney is less than excited about her assignment to keep a journal over the summer. Boring! Then cousin Carl Ray comes to stay with her family, and what starts out as the dull dog days of summer quickly turns into the wildest roller coaster ride of all time. How was Mary Lou suppose to know what would happen with Carl Ray and the ring? Or with her boy-crazy best friend Beth Ann? Or with (sigh) the permanently pink Alex Cheevey? Suddenly a boring school project becomes a record of the most exciting, incredible, unbelievable summer of Mary Lou's life. But what if her teacher actually does read her journal?

I read this for the first time in 8th grade and didn‘t really like it. Rereading it now, 17 years later, I enjoyed it a lot more. The characters act their ages and interact in realistic ways. I also liked all of the references to The Odyssey sprinkled throughout, and I‘m always a fan of epistolary novels.

I‘ve been mostly absent from Litsy for a while now - I got busy at work, and I found a new hobby (#powerlifting), and for awhile I wasn‘t enjoying books the way I usually do. Which was my own fault - I tend to set really ambitious goals for myself (Read all the Hugo/Nebula/Locus Award nominees!) and force myself through them even when it‘s awful. But I‘m back! With a super messy #shelfie for #Riotgrams, because I am a mess.

Absolutely Normal Chaos is an RF novel by Sharon Creech that would be good for an IR. This book is told from the perspective of a teenage girl writing in her journal for a school project - she also reviews Greek literature for another school project within it! This book teaches vocabulary, literature, and lessons about friends and family. I read it until it fell apart as a kid! #LAE3414sp19

alexandracarpenter Find a teaching guide on Sharon Creech's website www.sharoncreech.com/book/9780064406321/absolutely-normal-chaos 6y
alexandracarpenter I think this would work great with UDL 1.1 - offer was of customizing the display of information and 9.3 - develop self- assessment and reflection. The fact that it is written in a journal format works well with these guidelines! 6y
alexandracarpenter For ESOL strategies I would use 38 - assign short readings for homework. 6y
DrSpalding This author is excellent! She recently began following me on Twitter. What an honor. 6y

1. Read mysteries; write poetry; submit poetry and a short story to contests.
2. Tagged, although I've never read or even heard of the book before. Anyone else ever read it?
3. NYC or Washington DC, I guess; not really a city person. I've lived in a small town for the last 40 years.
4. Neither
5. 77, rainy & humid

The story of my life.... Thing go wrong and I expect it. I read this book on a plane with horrible turbulence when I was 12. 17 years later I still remember it. #24in48 Title could be the story of my life.
