Agatha Raisin and the First Two Tantalising Cases
Agatha Raisin and the First Two Tantalising Cases | M. C. Beaton
16 posts | 10 read | 8 to read
Introducing Agatha Raisin! The Quiche of Death High-flying public relations supremo Agatha Raisin has decided to take early retirement. She's off to make a new life in a picture-perfect Cotswold village. To make friends, she enters the local quiche-making competition - and to make quite sure of first prize she secretly pays a visit to a London deli. Alas, the competition judge succumbs after tasting her perfect quiche, and Agatha is revealed as a cheat and potential poisoner. Definitely not the best start. So Agatha must turn amateur sleuth - she's absolutely got to track down the real killer! The Vicious Vet Agatha Raisin is enjoying life in her pretty Cotswold village of Carsely. It even seems likely that the attractive new vet, Paul Bladen, has taken a shine to her. But before romance can blossom, Paul is killed in an accident with Lord Pendlebury's horse. Only the circumstances are rather suspicious. Agatha decides she must once more play amateur investigator. And this cloud has a silver lining - she can persuade her stand-offish neighbour, James Lacey, to become her partner in the quest. As usual, Agatha rushes in, heedless of the lurking menace to both James and herself. Agatha Raisin is a Mammoth Screen and Free@Last TV production for Sky 1.

My first thought for #TranquilTuesday was the British cozy mysteries I love in books and on TV. The village in the Cotswolds where Agatha Raisin moves seems like a tranquil place to live, except for all the murders! (Much like Midsomer Murders TV show) #MagnificentMarch

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks 👍🏻 📖 📚 5y
OriginalCyn620 I may have to try this out! 5y
MallenNC @OriginalCyn620 Our library has some of the first ones on Libby as audiobooks. Try those! The tv show is a little different than the books but they‘ve both good. 5y

I really enjoyed my first (well two) Agatha Raisin mysteries. I'd not read M. C. Beaton before but I have added the third book to my TBR list. I'm a big fan of the TV series and whilst there are some distinct differences the essence of the two remain the same. A good fun read. And I'm using it for the British crime novel prompt for my #readingwidelychallenge with my library.

I've finished the first story now onto the second. My first M.C. Beaton and I really enjoyed it.

I've had a great day today listening to Double J replay 1999's Triple J's hottest 100, whilst parenting and doing chores. So much great music. Even managed to find extra time to read my first M. C. Beaton.

(Triple J is a youth radio station and each year the audience votes for their favourites which becomes the hottest 100. Double J is its sister station for slightly older listeners. They do a lot to promote local music and unearth new talent.)

Jeg Just heard today that MC Beaton has died. 5y

#bookmail I ordered the Jan Karon book for hubby; he‘s been dealing with some anxiety issues the past couple months and was reading something that was just too intense. He loves the Father Tim books and hasn‘t read this one yet. And, after @BlameJennyJane introduced me to Agatha Raisin, I decided I need to dig into this series. This book contains the first two Agatha mysteries.

BlameJennyJane Yay! I‘m so excited for you! Enjoy Aggie! There are one or two fun Aggie groups on FB if you get hooked and want to find “your people”. Lol. I hope hubby feels better so. Anxiety is evil. 🤗 5y
Lynnsoprano @BlameJennyJane Thanks 🙏 Fortunately he‘s doing a lot better than he was a few weeks ago, but we‘re still trying to keep things light. He tried to watch something more intense on tv the other night and couldn‘t sleep. It truly is evil. He‘ll be fine for 3 or 4 years and then something will set it off and it‘s hell. 5y
BlameJennyJane @Lynnsoprano you are both in my thoughts. I‘m very susceptible to media influences too. Hubs and I saw the new Joker movie and I found it completely overwhelming and psychologically disturbing beyond anything I can recall and I retreated into the most benign of my cozy mysteries. 5y

I‘m reposting this so I remember I want to do it! I go through phases of reading cozy mysteries, so I think this will be fun. See the post on their pages for details.

BlameJennyJane Way cool! I‘m gonna repost too. Btw- the tagged book- Agatha Raisin is my favorite Cozy character. 6y
MallenNC @BlameJennyJane I love Agatha Raisin! I haven‘t read all of them but I love the ones I have and liked the TV show too. I‘ve got a couple of Agathas to read for this. 6y
BlameJennyJane Sweet! My library has most of the audiobooks (on Hoopla, I think) and I went through a phase when I had to have ALL Agatha books... truth be told though I‘ve only complete a handful of them. I love the show too! 6y

Not as funny as it was on TV and minor characters are indistinguishable so I was forgetting who was who amongst the suspects

I love this series of books. I initially got hooked on the tv series, and now I am loving the books. Cozy mysteries in small town English village. Nosy neighbours, funny characters and a middle aged, gutsy and often hilarious detective. What‘s not to love?

I seem to be in a cozy mystery phase right now. Earl grey latte and a cookie, perfect partners for Agatha Raisin.🍪

4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book was fabulous company while finishing a knitting homework assignment. Agatha is positively insane- in all of ways that I like 🤪!! I‘m glad that the series seems long enough to take me through the rest of my beginner‘s class and maybe even through intermediate knitting this spring!! 🧦🧤🧣

Feeling like a little snark on a Sunday morning :) I wasn't sure I liked Agatha in the first of this series as she's kind of a bat... but she's grown on me! Midway through " The Vicious Vet". Bring on the snark! #mystery #snark #currentread

PurpleyPumpkin Have you seen the tv show? Season 1 was quite entertaining, but I'm not sure if a second season is in the works. 7y
Andrew65 It does take a few books to get into this series. 7y
Bookzombie @PurpleyPumpkin I really liked the show. I wish they would do another. 7y

PurpleyPumpkin @Bookzombie Me too! They're fun shows and at an hour each, easy to fit in to my tv time. 7y
Mariposa_Bookworm I read the first of the series and I didn't like Agatha. However, if you think it gets better, I may give it a try. 7y
TheCanuckReader @Mariposa_Bookworm as long as you can accept she's crotchety it's good. I'm about 1/3 through the 2nd one and so far so good. 7y
TheCanuckReader there's a show??? 7y
Mariposa_Bookworm @TheCanuckReader yes! I think it may be available through Acorn, which streams all things British. 7y
