Shrewed: A Wry and Closely Observed Look at the Lives of Women and Girls
Shrewed: A Wry and Closely Observed Look at the Lives of Women and Girls | Elizabeth Renzetti
8 posts | 7 read | 6 to read
Why are there so few women in politics? Why is public space, whether it's the street or social media, still so inhospitable to women? What does Carrie Fisher have to do with Mary Wollstonecraft? And why is a wedding ceremony Satan's playground? These are some of the questions that bestselling author and acclaimed journalist Elizabeth Renzetti examines in her new collection of essays. Drawing upon Renzetti's decades of reporting on feminist issues, Shrewed is a book about feminism's crossroads. From Hillary Clinton's failed campaign to the quest for equal pay, from the lessons we can learn from old ladies to the future of feminism in a turbulent world, Renzetti takes a pointed, witty look at how far we've come -- and how far we have to go.If Nellie McClung and Erma Bombeck had an IVF baby, this book would be the result. If they'd lived at the same time. And in the same country. And if IVF had been invented. Well, you get the point.

“Politics has always been a bare-knuckle game, even here in Canada, where the myth of politeness lies as thin as April ice on a pond.“

A look at living life as a modern woman from a feminist perspective. Renzetti uses great humor in exploring some difficult realities for women, though the tone turns more somber in the second half. I love this type of book and appreciate that this one is from a woman in her 50s, a touch older than me, but I could relate to her. Plus she emphasizes the importance of intersectionality, which is good to see.

A witty, insightful, and occasionally hilarious collection of essays on women, journalism, and the state of the world today.

Another book as great as expected. Renzetti‘s voice is wry, her eye precise and her feminist agenda right on the mark. Each essay / letter / speech / chapter was well done and I appreciated how she acknowledged her own past shortcomings and ongoing attempts to be a feminist at all intersections; I also loved how she wrote of her own changing role, as someone who listens and supports, helping provide space for new and needed voices.

I am loving every moment of this book. It‘s frank, hilarious and honest. But this chapter really sealed the deal.

“ I was probably alone...sitting in the school library where all young heretics learn their first and best lessons..” Off to a great start with this book! I didn‘t know she was Canadian so it‘s interesting to read from that perspective.

This just in! I feel like I‘ve been the number one person in line for two books for SEVERAL WEEKS. What a tease to see that you are number 1 of 1 copy at the library.
