Max is a grave-robbing 13-year-old who gathers relics to pawn for comic book money. Macon works at the local Mallmart by day and publishes his comic book manifestos by night. Madison is a punk beauty who just might be able to fly. When Macon gets badly beaten in a fight with his boss over comic books, Macon and Madison take revenge by smashing the front of the store. They leave their calling card graffitied across the wreckage: Comic Book Liberation Army. The next day Max joins in the mayhem and soon the town has declared all-out war on comic books. Thus begins Teenagers From Mars, a chaotic comics extravaganza in which three teens strive against censorship, and adults, to protect the comics they love. Originally published as a series of comics, Teenagers from Mars shows what happens when people who love comics enough to fight for them are forced to.

I need suggestions. I have a sixteen year old daughter and we are going to be starting a reading program at home to supplement her school work. I am looking for books that are definitely not too young for her but I have no objection to ones which might be considered a bit too old for her. Books that will obviously keep her interest. No religious content but spirituality is encouraged. LGBTQ content is a plus. See comments please. . .

Laney1733 I'm looking for books to develop her empathy as well as encourage her to think about bigger issues such as the environment and the future of humanity. Fiction or nonfiction, I'd like to target a bit of both. Thank you all very much!! 7y
buecherwurm When I read your post I had to think of the Carbon Diaries. I'd classify it as a YA environmental novel. I remember loving it as a teenager but I'm honestly not sure at which age I read this. Depending on your expectations it might be too easy.

Libby1 Herland and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman for early feminism. Also, The Doll‘s House by Ibsen looks at gender issues. The Colour Purple by Alice Walker. If you think it‘s not too young for her then Number the Stars by Lois Lowry is an excellent one about the Holocaust. My Name is Malala by Malala Youssefzai is amazing. Does she have any particular interests? 7y

buecherwurm And the History of Bees deals with some very contemporary topics. I read this recently so it should be just fine or maybe slighty advanced for your daughters age (I'm 21).

The Kite Runner, Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda and My Name is Malala are definitely going on the list. I love all Octavia Butler so I'll have to look at that again. These are all excellent suggestions, so many great books! I just want to stuff it all in her brain today. 7y

kgriffith I have recommended this book to people telling them that it is the book I wish I‘d read when I was 16. Intersectional identities, LGBTQ+, and beautiful prose.

TheReadingNurse I read The Secret Life of Bees and The Color Purple around the age of 16. I remember being extremely moved by both books. I also recommend Salt to the Sea, it deals with a teen trying to escape Europe during the Holocaust 7y
