Hold Back the Dark
Hold Back the Dark | Kay Hooper

An SCU team investigates an inexplicable string of murders committed by men and women with no memory of their crimes in the latest in this New York Times bestselling series. Madness has taken ahold of Prosperity, North Carolina. Residents are killing one another, as if in a dream, and waking up with no memory of the monstrous acts they've committed--or why. As the death toll climbs, the local sheriff's department is further rocked by a murder carried out by one of their own. Deputy Katie Cole knows that whatever monster is afoot is beyond her scope... The Special Crimes Unit is called in for their specific brand of investigation. It will take all their training, all their experience, and every extra sense they can call on to get to the bottom of things in Prosperity. And as a dark pattern begins to emerge, even the most experienced and hardened SCU agents have to wonder if this is beyond their understanding.

Reviews While Reading/ a pre-review review

— 75% finished, or 199 pages

Still a lot of #facts alternating with reviews of said #facts always followed by more facts. These facts amount to a bunch of stuff nobody knows. Then there is more review and reiteration of #facts leading to more stuff nobody knows. 🙄

Reviews While Reading 🤓— a pre-review review ✍️

@ 36%, or 106 pages 📖

Lots of information, #facts, explanations and rationalizing. Very Nancy Drew.

Relevant Q & A:
Anybody remember Nancy Drew?

Butterfinger Yes. I need to reread some. Or get the new versions. 5y
PurpleTulipGirl I read some Nancy Drew, but I liked the Hardy Boys more, till I discovered Trixie Belden. 5y
Geenie @Butterfinger I haven‘t since middle school. Now that I remember her I‘m thirsty to read her again and see what had me so wrapped up. 5y

Geenie @PurpleTulipGirl I‘ve never read the Hardy Boys or Trixie Belden! Are they from the same time or genre? 5y
SamAnne Oh yes! Nancy! Tricia! Hardy Boys! Read those when I was 9 and 10 in the 70s. 5y
Geenie @SamAnne all three?!! Both of you? @PurpleTulipGirl what was I doing that idk who these other guys are? 5y
Geenie @SamAnne I see what‘s happening here. I was born in 88. So I somehow stumbled upon Nancy and never knew Tricia or the Boys. Hardy Boys is sounding more familiar the more I type and read it. 🤔 5y
SamAnne @Geenie my mom did skills development for workers at a Goodwill store. She brought the whole gamut of books home to me. 5y
Geenie @SamAnne 💃👍💖 your mom 5y
PurpleTulipGirl Hardy Boys books were very similar to the Nancy Drew ones. It always seemed to me like they were intended for boys, while Nancy Drew was for girls, but I didn‘t care. Trixie Belden was more of the same; mysteries solved with the help of friends, set in the ‘50s and ‘60s. I identified more with her than Nancy Drew. Trixie is a tomboy and stubborn. It appealed to my misfit nature. 5y
Geenie You are knowledgeable and informative @PurpleTulipGirl 😊💖 that‘s lit 🔥 5y

Really good except for the end. 🙁

Booknerd2 The ending was so anticlimactic and it had so much potential. 😡 6y

Mehso-so

This one had great potential but fell very short. Too many characters & too much explaining. It started with blood & gore & a scary premise. Then the talking. About psychics. About psychic abilities. About energy. Blah, blah blah.
I realized there was only 10 pages left in the book and we hadn't even confronted the "BIG BAD" (to quote Buffy). It was then wrapped up in a nice little bow way too fast. This one left me very unsatisfied.

ContraryMary Had it been like 100-200 pages longer and had a more satisfactory ending I feel like it would have been one her better ones in recent years. 7y
MaleficentBookDragon @ContraryMary I agree. I wish more time was spent on the school situation. I also think they could have cut the number of agents there by at least half. It could have been so good.😖 (edited) 7y
Booknerd2 Just finished it and I agree with all the above comments. @ContraryMary 6y

Some holds came in at the library, so I am putting my #unreadshelfproject2018 and #freakyfriday reads aside for the moment, and meet up with Bishop‘s Special Crimes Unit one more time. After a couple episodes of Westworld that is.

Pickpick

Got this as an ARC. The SCU and 6 psychics, known as the Chosen, receive messages to go to Prosperity. Strange thinks are happening there. A sinister pattern begins to emerge. It starts with a headache. The residents are doing unimaginable things, and waking up with no memory of the unspeakable acts they have committed. It's a darkness unlike any the world has ever seen.

tracey38 Oooh, sounds good! 7y
MonicaLoves2Read @#tracey38 It was good. It comes out in April. 7y
