A great read. Orenstein‘s essays on breast cancer, girls and women are thoughtful and engaging. I like her curiosity & blend of personal opinion with studies and data. Her writing is lively and engaging, honest about her own experiences as she grapples with feminism and how to raise a daughter, for example. I loved the essay ‘what‘s wrong with Cinderella‘ and her thoughts on Hillary Clinton and the obstacles that still exist for powerful women.

This is fabulous. I don‘t know if I‘ll read every essay but I‘m enjoying it.

When the author was diagnosed with breast cancer at 35, a friend said this, “I don‘t think of you as having the same thing they have.” “They” being patients with worse cases. I was struck by the realization that that‘s how my own friends & family feel about my diagnosis. I‘ve been fine for 2 yrs, and needed only a lumpectomy & radiation, so they see me as fine.

I switched up my listening because I was more in the mood for non-fiction. This is a collection of essays about various feminist icons and issues. I‘m enjoying it so far.

It took me a bit to get through this. There is a lot of heavy subject matter- cancer, infertility, science of genetics. But Orenstein‘s writing is interesting, and the last part was more about raising a daughter in the current society, and I flew through.

I got in my walk before lunch with Sietje. The weather later today is supposed to get nasty- thundershowers and possibly hail. Although cloudy it was a nice walk, around 60 F, and we saw this Gray Hawk scouring the long grass for rodents or snakes. I hope he got some lunch!
I only audiowalk during ‘thons, I like to hear the world around me the rest of the time. But I started the tagged book last night. 👍

I really enjoyed Orenstein‘s Girls and Sex, so I was excited for this collection of her previously published essays. The first (profiles of individual women) and fourth (explorations of sexual politics) sections are great, but the middle is bogged down by too many redundant essays of the author‘s breast cancer and discussions of infertility, to which I don‘t relate. I would suggest this as a good selective library read.

#bookmail! I‘m trying to cut back on my book buying, but I certainly can‘t resist a Powell‘s sale! I‘ve very happy with this stack and especially look forward to the backlist titles from Leni Zumas and Chloe Benjamin after loving Red Clocks and The Immortalists.

This one hit a little too close to home today. When this essay was originally published, I was both a yearbook editor and valedictorian. For the last month I have basically been living Avenue Q.
