Don't Call Me Princess: Essays on Girls, Women, Sex, and Life
Don't Call Me Princess: Essays on Girls, Women, Sex, and Life | Peggy Orenstein
11 posts | 9 read | 21 to read
The New York Times bestselling author of Girls & Sex and Cinderella Ate My Daughter delivers her first ever collection of essays--funny, poignant, deeply personal and sharply observed pieces, drawn from three decades of writing, which trace girls' and women's progress (or lack thereof) in what Orenstein once called a "half-changed world." Named one of the "40 women who changed the media business in the last 40 years" by Columbia Journalism Review, Peggy Orenstein is one of the most prominent, unflinching feminist voices of our time. Her writing has broken ground and broken silences on topics as wide-ranging as miscarriage, motherhood, breast cancer, princess culture and the importance of girls' sexual pleasure. Her unique blend of investigative reporting, personal revelation and unexpected humor has made her books bestselling classics. In Don't Call Me Princess, Orenstein's most resonant and important essays are available for the first time in collected form, updated with both an original introduction and personal reflections on each piece. Her takes on reproductive justice, the infertility industry, tensions between working and stay-at-home moms, pink ribbon fear-mongering and the complications of girl culture are not merely timeless--they have, like Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, become more urgent in our contemporary political climate. Don't Call Me Princess offers a crucial evaluation of where we stand today as women--in our work lives, sex lives, as mothers, as partners--illuminating both how far we've come and how far we still have to go.

A great read. Orenstein‘s essays on breast cancer, girls and women are thoughtful and engaging. I like her curiosity & blend of personal opinion with studies and data. Her writing is lively and engaging, honest about her own experiences as she grapples with feminism and how to raise a daughter, for example. I loved the essay ‘what‘s wrong with Cinderella‘ and her thoughts on Hillary Clinton and the obstacles that still exist for powerful women.

Megabooks I adore her books! 5y

When the author was diagnosed with breast cancer at 35, a friend said this, “I don‘t think of you as having the same thing they have.” “They” being patients with worse cases. I was struck by the realization that that‘s how my own friends & family feel about my diagnosis. I‘ve been fine for 2 yrs, and needed only a lumpectomy & radiation, so they see me as fine.

I switched up my listening because I was more in the mood for non-fiction. This is a collection of essays about various feminist icons and issues. I‘m enjoying it so far.

It took me a bit to get through this. There is a lot of heavy subject matter- cancer, infertility, science of genetics. But Orenstein‘s writing is interesting, and the last part was more about raising a daughter in the current society, and I flew through.

If you enjoy nonfiction essays this might be your jam.

I got in my walk before lunch with Sietje. The weather later today is supposed to get nasty- thundershowers and possibly hail. Although cloudy it was a nice walk, around 60 F, and we saw this Gray Hawk scouring the long grass for rodents or snakes. I hope he got some lunch!
I only audiowalk during ‘thons, I like to hear the world around me the rest of the time. But I started the tagged book last night. 👍

I really enjoyed Orenstein‘s Girls and Sex, so I was excited for this collection of her previously published essays. The first (profiles of individual women) and fourth (explorations of sexual politics) sections are great, but the middle is bogged down by too many redundant essays of the author‘s breast cancer and discussions of infertility, to which I don‘t relate. I would suggest this as a good selective library read.

#bookmail! I‘m trying to cut back on my book buying, but I certainly can‘t resist a Powell‘s sale! I‘ve very happy with this stack and especially look forward to the backlist titles from Leni Zumas and Chloe Benjamin after loving Red Clocks and The Immortalists.

Cinfhen So curious about both of those books!!! 7y
Librariana I'm with @Cinfhen - curious about those two... especially The Immortalists. And I don't think that I'd be able to pass up a Powell's shopping trip either! 😍💜📚 I hope we'll be able to go back and visit now that the hubby and I are moving up to Washington! 😄 7y
Hooked_on_books @Librariana How cool! Where in Washington are you moving? I know a Litsy meetup in Portland is in the early planning stages for May/June. If you‘re in the PNW by then, you could join in! 7y

Cinfhen Didn‘t know you were moving @Librariana good luck💚☘️😊 7y
Librariana Thanks, @Cinfhen! 😄💜 I briefly mentioned it in a post a couple of weeks back since I'm in the job hunting process. I was deep in résumé and cover letter editing mode! 😁 And we're moving to Spokane, @Hooked_on_books 😊 We were stationed there years ago and hope to have good networking opportunities for job prospects. If the future work schedule allows, I would love to meet you all! 💖 7y
Hooked_on_books @Librariana Spokane‘s a bit of a trek to Portland (and I‘m on the coast, even further), but we‘ll see what happens. I hope the whole moving process goes smoothly. You‘ll be in @Rachel.Rencher territory up there—could be an “eastern” PNW meet up in the future. 😉 7y
Rachel.Rencher @Librariana I just moved out of the Spokane area! I live in Boise now. 😊 I was born and raised in the Spokane/ CdA area though so let me know if you need anything! Thanks for the tag @Hooked_on_books 😍 7y
Librariana @Rachel.Rencher - the hubby and I were actually contemplating a move to Boise there for a little while! 😄 What a serendipitous coincidence that things are working out this way for each of us! Thank you so much for the tag introduction, @Hooked_on_books! You're an angel! 😇💖 7y
Librariana @Hooked_on_books - Holly, I do agree that it's a bit of a trek to the Portland area, but we've made it once before and hope to do it again in the near future, when time and schedules permit 😁 Thank you so much for your well wishes for a smooth move. We hope it is, too! 💕 7y

This one hit a little too close to home today. When this essay was originally published, I was both a yearbook editor and valedictorian. For the last month I have basically been living Avenue Q.
