Nothing Left to Burn
Nothing Left to Burn | Heather Ezell
8 posts | 7 read | 20 to read
The autumn morning after sixteen-year-old Audrey Harper loses her virginity, she wakes to a loud, persistent knocking at her front door. Waiting for her are two firemen, there to let her know that the moment she's been dreading has arrived: the enormous wildfire sweeping through Orange County, California, is now dangerously close to her idyllic gated community of Coto de Caza, and it's time to evacuate. Over the course of the next twenty-four hours, as Audrey wrestles with the possibility of losing her family home, she also recalls her early, easy summer days with Brooks, the charming, passionate, but troubled volunteer firefighter who enchants Audrey--and who is just as enthralled by her. But as secrets from Brooks's dark past come to light, Audrey can't help but wonder if there's danger in the pull she feels--both toward this boy, and toward the fire burning in the distance.

My first editor's debut, this YA suspense revolves around Audrey's romance with a volunteer firefighter both on the day of an evac and the months leading up to the forest fire, and the disparity in their relationship between the two timelines. I saw my teenage self in the MC, how the lust of first love blinded me to the indicators. If slightly disoriented in chapter 2, it will soon make sense, and it's worth it, because the words are so beautiful.

Ignorant to whether a term already exists for this common e-reader problem, I've invented one.

PAGE LOOP: When you flip a page on your e-reader, but you're too tired to notice it didn't flip, and you start reading the same page again, and the last words on the page fit plausibly enough with the first words to make you believe you have indeed successfully flipped the page, how many words you read before noticing an indicator of how tired you are.

LauraBeth 🤣 Also applicable when you think you turned a page but it turned two pages! 7y

Ah! My pre-order came in. This is my editor from my first 'practice' book when I was writing YA. She let me read the first few chapters over a year ago, and that's how I figured out what all the fuss was about. THERE WAS AN AGENT WAR OVER THIS ONE, I can't remember if it was 6 or 12. It's a YA novel set during a forest fire evac.

CocoReads Sold. Adding to stack now. 7y
LauraBeth I dropped in for more Author Lingo! 🙌 7y

jmclarks_Books_Bazaar If you have kindle unlimited you can check out my new book for free. I‘d love to get your feedback on the first few chapters. You are always reading the best stuff. 7y
RaimeyGallant @jmclark35 Hi! I've seen your book before from one of your posts when you first signed up. You should go to help/settings and ask Litsy to add it to the database. While I love reading new authors, this may not be the best time to catch me, because I just committed to re-reading my critique partner's MS. Also, I'm finishing my WIP right now, a mystery, and I'm trying to read in that genre at the moment to keep the inspiration flowing. :) 7y
RaimeyGallant @jmclark35 And I don't have a kindle yet. :) 7y
jmclarks_Books_Bazaar I‘m definitely going to do that. Thank you so much 7y

This. Was. Awesome.

It was pitched to me as just a survival story of a California family fleeing a forest fire, but it goes into waaaay more than that. Topics like guilt and forgiveness and redemption and what it means to grieve and move on. Highly recommend.

Book 10 of 2018. This was a dark, intense YA novel about a fire destroying everything in its path and the characters caught in the middle of it all. Audrey has 20 minutes to evacuate her house while the fire is getting closer in the first chapter. I was totally hooked as soon as I read the first scene. Look for this book in March 🔥
