Together We Rise: Behind the Scenes at the Protest Heard Around the World | Women's March Organizers and Conde Nast
11 posts | 5 read | 15 to read
In celebration of the one-year anniversary of Womens March, this gorgeously designed full-color book offers an unprecedented, front-row seat to one of the most galvanizing movements in American history, with exclusive interviews with Womens March organizers, never-before-seen photographs, and essays by feminist activists. On January 21, 2017, the day after Donald J. Trumps inauguration, more than three million marchers of all ages and walks of life took to the streets as part of the largest protest in American history. In red states and blue states, in small towns and major urban centers, from Boise to Boston, Bangkok to Buenos Aires, people from eighty-two countrieson all seven continentsrose up in solidarity to voice a common message: Hear our voice. It became the largest global protest in modern history. Compiled by Womens March organizers, in partnership with Cond Nast and Glamour magazine Editor in Chief Cindi Leive, Together We Risepublished for the one-year anniversary of the eventis the complete chronicle of this remarkable uprising. For the first time, Womens March organizersincluding Bob Bland, Cassady Fendlay, Sarah Sophie Flicker, Janaye Ingram, Tamika Mallory, Paola Mendoza, Carmen Perez, and Linda Sarsour tell their personal stories and reflect on their collective journey in an oral history written by Jamia Wilson, writer, activist and director of The Feminist Press. They provide an inside look at how the idea for the event originated, how it was organized, how it became a global movement that surpassed their wildest expectations, and how they are sustaining and building on the widespread outrage, passion, and determination that sparked it. Together We Rise interweaves their stories with "Voices from the March"recollections from real women who were there, across the worldplus exclusive images by top photographers, and 20 short, thought-provoking essays by esteemed writers, celebrities and artists including Rowan Blanchard, Senator Tammy Duckworth, America Ferrera, Roxane Gay, Ilana Glazer, Ashley Judd, Valarie Kaur, David Remnick, Yara Shahidi, Jill Soloway, Jia Tolentino, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, and Elaine Welteroth. An inspirational call to action that reminds us that together, ordinary people can make a difference, Together We Rise is an unprecedented look at a day that made historyand the beginning of a resistance movement to reclaim our future.

Speaking of censorship... et tu, National Archives? For an exhibit featuring the 2017 Women‘s March, the Archives blurred photos of signs critical of Trump, as well as mentions to women‘s anatomy...

Holding down the fort here at the clinics while some of the other volunteers and staff attend the Women's March in DC. I'm not down there in person, but I'm with you all in spirit!

CarolynM ✊ Good for you! This is such an important issue. The political assaults on the provision of contraception make me so angry. 6y
Amiable @CarolynM Exactly! That's the part that makes me especially angry. If you don't believe in abortion, why wouldn't you want to support an organization that provides birth control--that will help prevent abortions? That would seem to be a no-brainer. 🙄 (edited) 6y
CarolynM Indeed. Same goes for proper sex education. 6y

#bookhaul from Second Flight Books #smallbusinesssaturday I discovered it passing through Lafayette, Indiana and even got 15% off by showing I had bought a few yummy truffles next door at Richelle in a Handbasket! #shopsmall Ooh, and a free tote, too! Tagged book is for my daughter to remember her day at the #womensmarch and pass on to her daughter someday and say "This is how it all started back in the day."

Talewaggingreads All that's missing is a bottle of a good red.❤🍫🍷📚 Haha! Good red/good read! 6y

Today's protest/call to action at the Capitol.

Urging congress to pass the ERA. (Equal rights amendment). They had some fantastic speakers.

Last week was the NRA. Once June hits we get about one a day. Even if congress is out of session.

Karkar When I was there a year or so ago, the protesters for banning circumcising. I thought wow there really is something for everyone. 6y
LibrarianRyan @Karkar were you at National or Illinois. Illinois is one of 3 or four capitols built in the style of federal congress and it gets used all the time for films. The number of protests and rally's at the Illinois state Capitol is amazing. This one was smaller than I thought it would be. But some!!! The union rally's take blocks. 6y
Karkar @LibrarianRyan National....I find it interesting to see what different people support. Except I was not too keen for talking to the circumcising group. 😮 6y

Great book published one year after the Women's March. Many photos, essays, and personal stories. My favorite was the essay "The Roar" by Ashley Judd remembering her reciting the poem "I Am a Nasty Woman"

This is one book worth listening to. The organizers themselves read it and it lends to a sense of intimacy that merely reading it would have lacked.
