BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Calvin Trillin's Quite Enough of Calvin Trillin. In Calvin Trillins antic tales of family life, she was portrayed as the wife who had a weird predilection for limiting our family to three meals a day and the mother who thought that if you didnt go to every performance of your childs school play, the county would come and take the child. Now, five years after her death, her husband offers this loving portrait of Alice Trillin off the pagehis loving portrait of Alice Trillin off the pagean educator who was equally at home teaching at a university or a drug treatment center, a gifted writer, a stunningly beautiful and thoroughly engaged woman who, in the words of a friend, managed to navigate the tricky waters between living a life you could be proud of and still delighting in the many things there are to take pleasure in. Though it deals with devastating loss, About Alice is also a love story, chronicling a romance that began at a Manhattan party when Calvin Trillin desperately tried to impress a young woman who seemed to glow. You have never again been as funny as you were that night, Alice would say, twenty or thirty years later. You mean I peaked in December of 1963? Im afraid so. But he never quit trying to impress her. In his writing, she was sometimes his subject and always his muse. The dedication of the first book he published after her death read, I wrote this for Alice. Actually, I wrote everything for Alice. In that spirit, Calvin Trillin has, with About Alice, created a gift to the wife he adored and to his readers.

My #doublespin for June was this short homage by Calvin Trillin to his late wife Alice. Theirs is a sweet literary love story in which Alice starred as both critic and muse for Trillin‘s writing. In a few short essays Trillin brings to life his larger than life wife, an optimist, a cancer survivor, a woman who cared deeply about those around her and who never stopped believing that the hand she was dealt was a lucky one.

This slim book of essays about Trillin‘s wife Alice was a perfect Sunday afternoon read. His love for her and her personality shine through on the pages. She sounds like she was a dynamic and caring woman.

Where is my mind

Day 21 of #MayMovieMagic with #WhereIsMyMind
@Rohit-sawant @Cinfhen #BookToMovie

Update: I snapped this pic and posted and then realized I blew it, the book should be Still Alice. But then realized, well crap #WhereIsMyMind!

Cinfhen Hahahahaha😂funny, how that happens 6y
marleed I was about to snap a new pic and then had to laugh that the original was kind of fitting - and perhaps a little disconcerting. 6y
RohitSawant 😆 It is keeping with the theme. Also, wasn't aware of this one, it sounds like a moving read. 6y
marleed @rohit-sawant I thrifted it a while back thinking it was Still Alice. Litsy reviews (as I noticed this morning) like it so now I must read! 6y

Eggs @kaye Thanks for gold star ⭐️! Is this in reference to a book challenge somewhere? 6y
Kaye Well, not exactly, although there is a nonfiction bingo started by @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I think. I saw it advertised through @Cinfhen . I‘m just looking for nonfiction reviews and giving them a gold star since I like reading nonfiction. 😁 In other words, just my own harebrained idea 💡 (edited) 6y
Eggs Sounds like a great plan. I'll alert you whenever my next NF is read 🤗❤️😊💙 6y

This has been on my #tbr for a long time. A story of Trillin and his wife‘s Alice‘s love that he published after her death. A love story with devastating sadness. He certainly followed the advice to 🎵 “let her into your heart” 🎵 #heyjude #heyjune

GypsyKat Love that. ❤️ 6y
Cinfhen Great use of lyrics🖤🖤🖤 6y

This piece is excellent at what it sets out to do - talk about the woman behind the "character " that Calvin Trillin wrote about (lovingly) for decades. It's touching, interesting, and sad.
I've been trying to listen to more audiobooks, and at 2x (#sorrynotsorry), this was 35 minutes very well spent!

I don't do a lot of rereading, but I read this beautiful tribute almost every year on Valentine's Day (yeah I'm sometimes that corny). It's also a fab audiobook. #FunPhotoFriday @Liberty
