A Killer in King's Cove
A Killer in King's Cove | Iona Whishaw
28 posts | 23 read | 24 to read
A smart and enchanting postwar mystery that will appeal to fans of the Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear. It is 1946, and war-weary young ex-intelligence officer Lane Winslow leaves London to look for a fresh start. When she finds herself happily settled into a sleepy hamlet in the interior of British Columbia surrounded by a suitably eclectic cast of small-town characters she feels like she may finally be able to put her past to rest. But then a body is discovered, the victim of murder, and although she works alongside the towns inspectors Darling and Ames to discover who might have possibly have motivation to kill, she unknowingly casts doubt on herself. As the investigation reveals facts that she has desperately tried to keep a secret, it threatens to pull her into a vortex of even greater losses than the ones she has already endured. A clever postwar mystery that will appeal to fans the Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear or the Bess Crawford series by Charles Todd.

This is my first Lane Winslow mystery and I really quite enjoyed it. Set in post-WW2 Canada, the characters are quite delightful, as was the mystery. Cozy but not twee. Will definitely be reading more from this series!

I haven‘t audiowalked in ages and this book helped me get back into it. I liked the setting - historical mystery set in rural BC. I liked the main character too - maybe because it was only the first book in the series, I wanted to know so much more about her. Both the mystery and romance fell flat for me.

This has all of the elements you would expect from a cozy mystery. It makes for a nice listen at night in bed. 👍🏾 I‘ve placed a hold on #2.

My only nitpick is the budding romance. Why must authors in this genre position every MC in the path of love? 🤔 I can see all of the scenarios from here already.

Ruthiella I had this book IN MY HAND at the library sale yesterday! 😂 If it‘s still there next time, maybe I‘ll lay out another dollar and bring it home. (edited) 2y
Tamra @Ruthiella it‘s definitely worth the dollar! 2y

Finished this one on audio yesterday. I was surprised with how much I liked this historical mystery. It‘s set after WWII. Lane moves to Canada after the war to get away from the memories. She was a operative for the British government.

She moves and then she finds a murdered man in the creek. She of course is suspected and has to work to clear her name.

I like the set up of the romance and the mystery itself. The audio was good too!

kspenmoll Now I will check this out! Nice review! 3y

A truly interesting setting - extremely rural British Colombia after WWII - is the setting for this cozy murder mystery. I didn't really connect with the story, but I am intrigued by the female protagonist's back story of intelligence work during the war.

A wonderful historical novel with just the right amount of suspense. Lane Winslow, a retired British spy from WWII teams up to solve a murder and mystery that started during WWI. Can't wait to continue the series and learn more about the town's eccentric characters. So glad I read this book Amy @BookishBelle @monalyisha #newyearwhodis

BookishBelle I‘m so glad you liked it! I enjoyed that one so much that I read the second in the series as well! Third is on my tbr! 3y

Such an interesting book - set in rural British Columbia after the second world War. Reminded me a lot.of the Three Pines Series in that the place becomes like a character in the book.

It took me a month to read this...not because I didn‘t enjoy it. Life just got in the way. This was a delightful read... a much needed respite in my wild days of late. It was very well written and I already have the next in the series on my wish list. I‘ll be getting this in the mail today or tomorrow and I‘ll start my next #lmpbc book right away as my days are more likely to get harder than easier as the next month goes on.

robinb So glad you enjoyed it...me too! Hoping for better days ahead for you. Hang in there, sweet friend. 💕 4y

BookishBelle Thanks! Sorry, I haven‘t been on in a few days. My coworker‘s husband has symptoms of the virus so I‘ve had a lot going on the past few days transitioning me and some of my staff back into working from home. Anyway, you can send it on when you get a chance. No rush on this end either. I haven‘t started my selection yet. 4y

Great start to a new series for me! It‘s my pick for #LMPBC #GroupM, and I‘m so glad I chose it as I‘ve been meaning to read it for ages! I won‘t give away much detail (see GR), but I loved the interesting characters (in-depth development), the descriptive scenery (British Columbia) and the absorbing plot. Only cons were a good bit of backstory to work through (and I‘m sure more to come...and that‘s par for the course), and some abrupt POV ⬇️

robinb changes. Nothing major. The heroine, Lane Winslow, is simply wonderful! Interesting tidbit: Lane was inspired by the author‘s mother who was a wartime spy as well. Lovers of Bess Crawford and Maisie Dobbs should try this series. Looking forward to more! 4.5/5⭐️

It is truly Fall, my porch is too dark & too cold at 6 a.m. Having my first coffee in bed does feel Luxurious though! I can enjoy the porch later in the day #porchlife

Blaire It‘s true. I want to get out on the porch but it‘s in the 40s...just a touch too chilly. 5y
Scochrane26 I went to let my cat out on my sunporch this morning, then realized it was about 40 degrees. Made him come back in because I wasn‘t going to be cold. Now it‘s warmer, so I let him out. 5y

A Killer in King‘s Cove is like an English village mystery, except in Canada. Set post WWII, the characters have interesting backstories from the war that impact their every day life. Looking forward to seeing how the series, which is set in a small mountain town, develops. 📚 Bookish question: What are your favorite fictional small towns and villages? 🔎🌲🏔🔎

Loved it! Moving right on to the second book in this series. The Canadian setting, the fact that it takes place right after WWII and the mystery, all add up to a very enjoyable read. Now I drink my tea and read more of this series☕️

Excited for my #bookishmail from Thriftbooks today! The first two in a new-to-me mystery series! I also managed to snag the third and fourth books on Kindle sale recently.

Maybe I should have read the first one before ordering the rest you say??! 😳
Now where‘s the fun in that I ask you??! 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣🤣🤣🤣🤞🤞

5⭐️My new mystery series obsession. Former WW2 MI6 operative, Lane Winslow escapes to the tranquil woods of Canada. Her cottage is in the idyllic setting of apple orchards, evergreens, a lake, and a quiet community. Until a body is found wedged in the creek dam. Her name scribbled on a piece of paper in the corpse‘s pocket. Secrets and lies unravel in a well written plot. Gorgeous scenic descriptions and overall, well done.🔍
