Speak No Evil
Speak No Evil | Uzodinma Iweala
"A lovely slender volume that packs in entire worlds with complete mastery. Speak No Evil explains so much about our times and yet is never anything less than a scintillating, page-turning read."Gary Shteyngart "A wrenching, tightly woven story about many kinds of love and many kinds of violence. Speak No Evil probes deeply but also with compassion the cruelties of a loving home. Iwealas characters confront you in close-up, as viscerally, bodily alive as any in contemporary fiction."Larissa MacFarquhar In the long-anticipated novel from the author of the critically acclaimed Beasts of No Nation, a revelation shared between two privileged teenagers from very different backgrounds sets off a chain of events with devastating consequences. On the surface, Niru leads a charmed life. Raised by two attentive parents in Washington, D.C., hes a top student and a track star at his prestigious private high school. Bound for Harvard in the fall, his prospects are bright. But Niru has a painful secret: he is queeran abominable sin to his conservative Nigerian parents. No one knows except Meredith, his best friend, the daughter of prominent Washington insidersand the one person who seems not to judge him. When his father accidentally discovers Niru is gay, the fallout is brutal and swift. Coping with troubles of her own, however, Meredith finds that she has little left emotionally to offer him. As the two friends struggle to reconcile their desires against the expectations and institutions that seek to define them, they find themselves speeding toward a future more violent and senseless than they can imagine. Neither will escape unscathed. In the tradition of Junot Diazs The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichies Americanah, Speak No Evil explores what it means to be different in a fundamentally conformist society and how that difference plays out in our inner and outer struggles. It is a novel about the power of words and self-identification, about who gets to speak and who has the power to speak for other people. As heart-wrenching and timely as his breakout debut, Beasts of No Nation, Uzodinma Iwealas second novel cuts to the core of our humanity and leaves us reeling in its wake.

This was a short but powerful story about a young male realizing that he is gay but his conservative, strict Nigerian parents are not accepting. Niru struggles with his feelings & having no one to talk to. His older brother is in med school, he had a falling out with his best friend. He meets someone but he‘s so paralyzed by his parents overbearing pressure to be perfect & not be gay that he really struggles. The writing is beautiful even dealing

ncsufoxes With difficult subject matter. The book also highlighted the police brutality that Black males face in the US. There was a lot to unpack in this short book. And teenagers suck & make crappy decisions, them & their underdeveloped prefrontal cortexes. #bookspin book #booked2022 (a coming out story) 3y

Excellent, vivid writing by Uzodinma Iweala in this slim but memorable novel. It's a powerful coming of age story that explores topics of sexual identity, homophobia, immigration, and racial injustice.

I saw in another review someone comparing this to The Hate U Give and while there is some similarities... this was mostly about Niru, a Nigerian American boy coming to terms with his sexuality. The sections in his POV were tense and heartbreaking. And then Meredith 😠 mostly, this book was about suffering, lots of different kinds and I'm really sad now, so excuse me.

Megabooks Oh yeah. This is a super sad book. I remember fuming at parts! 4y

Thank you @Hooked_on_books for sharing this slim but POWERFUL story with me. Did not see the ending coming at all🤯
Contemporary fiction revolving around an Nigerian American prized student & athlete from a very traditional/religious home. Niru is keeping a secret from his parents and best friend and when that secret is exposed an avalanche of consequences erupt.

One of the ongoing assignments for my creative writing class is to bring in an index card each week with one sentence that we found striking in some way, whether read or heard, from some form of media.
This one reminds me so much of one root of dissonance between generations in the queer community, but it is reversed for me: pride in protection, frustration with complacency.

Niru realizes he is gay and is horrified—because his conservative, Nigerian-born parents think homosexuality is abomination. They inevitably find out and this book looks at the fallout. This book gutted me, but I do wonder if the author tried to do just a little too much in just over 200 pages.

Speak No Evil is a phenomenal story that touches on class, race, religion and sex. It would seem that Niru is your perfect child — excelling in school, sports and even earned acceptance to Harvard. Niru‘s stressors increase as he deals with the aftermath of his father‘s anger at the discovery that he is gay. The novel is heartbreaking and the ending left me blown away and speechless.

Thought provoking story about a high-schooler named Niru. Niru goes to a prestigious private school in the D.C. area and is headed to Harvard. He comes from a wealthy, ultra-religious, Nigerian family who are in great conflict because Niru believes that he might be gay. The author gives fair treatment to the subject matter. Oh, the family drama — it‘s heart breaking.

The writing was good here, but the structure of the story needed work. The first part dealt with the son of successful immigrants coming to terms with his sexuality. The second part abruptly changed focus to race relations in the US. The stories were related, but the focus was different in each. Either story on its own would have been great, but I didn‘t like the abrupt switch between them. #Hoopla

Uzodinma Iweala's book focuses on two protagonists: Niru, the son of a Nigerian immigrant who has just come out to his best friend, Meredith. Their friendship transforms as each deals with the aftermath of Niru's revelation. Niru's parents do not accept his homosexuality, and Meredith struggles with how best to be Niru's friend. (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod Though I wish I understood their friendship more, the novel is powerful as it confronts Niru's attempts to deal with others' expectations, with how to be a son, a brother, and a friend. The writing is powerful and, with the structure, serves to reinforce the irretrievable nature of the past. 6y

For the first part of this #audiobook set in contemporary, wealthy Washington DC, I was wondering if I needed to listen to another story about a white teen girl in love with her Black best friend, who then tells her that he‘s gay. That the guy‘s religious Nigerian immigrant father is not ok with his son‘s gayness is also a little old. A certain scene, however, snapped me to attention & then kept me riveted. This book begs bookclub discussion.

How do you rate a complex, original and well written book that you powerfully didn‘t want or need to read? This was incredible on every objective level, but I‘ve read so many novels about miserable queer people unable to come out and the repressive worlds they live in, I don‘t know if I need to read another book that‘s a pen portrait of a damaged queer person and their world as long as I live. But that‘s my personal needs, not the book‘s quality

bookishkai I felt that way about this book, too. I understand why it got good reviews: the quality of the storytelling and the diverse characters. But I wonder how many of the reviewers were queer themselves? Because I really thought we were getting past the kill your gays trope. Sigh. I‘m glad I‘m not the only one who didn‘t love this. 6y
Emilymdxn @bookishkris I totally agree. I think I‘d have loved this book if I hadn‘t already read a thousand books portraying queerness the same way. I do think it was more complex than most of the kill your gays books, if I was throwing out 1000 of them I might keep this one, but I don‘t need more death and self hatred, it‘s never served, nourished, entertained or educated me. GingerAntics True!!! I tried making a relationship like this work, it ended badly. Readers definitely need to be with readers. 6y
Julies_Bookshelf_Adventures Very true. Us bookworms need to be with other bookworms. Simple fact of life. 6y
LauraBeth @GingerAntics and @HufflepuffGirl90 I did manage to marry a non-reader. We‘ve been married almost 20 years, so it worked out! Prior to him, I dated readers but they were all aholes for some reason. He was kind - so I went with that over being a reader. The ideal would have been kindness AND a reader - I just never found it (and I looked for it until I was 30 😂). 6y

PagesByTheWater My husband is definitely not a reader like me, or a bookworm. But he‘s definitely wiser, more intelligent, than I. And he DOES read, just random articles that catch his fancy. 6y
GingerAntics @LauraBeth yeah, kindness and lack of assholery are very important. 6y
Linear Funny enough, I met my husband in a BN but our book love isnt even apart of our relationship. His books hurt my soul, their all paper backs with broken spines and in some cases, missing covers. His bookshelf is hidden in our room lol hes a toilet reader 6y
Mindyrecycles Some people don't read, and that is okay. I thought this was funny but there is also the sense of an immediate disdain/dismissal of reading that indeed comes off as a conversation and date ender! However my son is not a reader despite my best efforts, and I still like him very much. His long time girlfriend is quite a reader. I agree that kindness and curiosity and other qualities can overcome the non-reading handicap. LOL 6y
Mindyrecycles My husband doesn't sing, but he appreciates my singing and knows I HAVE to do it, so there's a parallel there. He does read, but we hardly ever read the same books so it's very exciting when we do! Gone Girl and Bird Box both made that cut. 6y
GingerAntics I‘ll agree some things can overcome not being a reader. A complete disdain is where the problem come in, I think. I see a lot of disdain for reading now, honestly. Next time my creeper comes around I should tell him I don‘t date guys who don‘t read. 6y

#tob2019 #audiobook This is a new delivery method for me; need to figure out how to speed it up. #librarybook

xicanti If you're reading through Overdrive or Libby, there should be a little icon that looks like a speedometer. Tap it a couple of times and the book'll speed up! 6y
BkClubCare @xicanti - found it! THANKS and Merry Christmas!🎄 6y
thebluestocking You are on a #ToB roll! 6y

BkClubCare @thebluestocking - not really. Taking me for. Ev.er to read Milkman. Hoping Parking Lot Attendant is faster! Plus, library books give me only 2 weeks 6y
thebluestocking @BkClubCare Two weeks is fast! I get three weeks and that seems to just blow by. I‘m taking forever to read The Overstory. So. Long. Though I cheated on it today and read So Lucky. It was very short and pretty good. Have you read it yet? 6y
BkClubCare @thebluestocking Not yet! But you have inspired me to put this phone down and read at least a few more pages of Pkg Lot Attendant. 6y
thebluestocking @BkClubCare Good for you! I‘m still struggling with The Overstory at just a 1/3 of the way through. 😬 If you don‘t have access to a copy, I‘d be happy to pass along my copy of So Lucky. 6y
BkClubCare Oh! Oh! Yes, that would be incredible. What can I get you in this exchange? Have you read Milkman? 6y

This book just socked me in the gut by chapter two, right at the start of my #beachreading. Have a feeling it‘s going to be heartbreaking...

Pickpick

A heartbreaking, difficult read. It was definitely flawed and I didn‘t love how it ended, but the writing was beautiful. I finished this last night and it made me even more depressed than I already was from the SCOTUS news. And now it‘s a dreary, rainy day, of course😒

Chrissyreadit Yes. I was wondering if any one else feels sick about SCOTUS. I‘m terrified. 6y
cariashley @Chrissyreadit me too. It‘s like every day is more terrifying that the last. 6y
Kitta Terrified about #SCOTUS too, I‘m on an immigrant visa so I can‘t vote. Really hoping for some positive change soon 6y
cariashley @Kitta 😞 well I‘ll be voting and donating and raising my voice on your behalf, for what it‘s worth! 6y
