Hah! I had no idea ToB did a Horror Popup mini tournament this October. Did anyone follow along? It could be fun to pit these against each other, and I cringe to admit I‘ve never even read the tagged. Maybe they‘ll do it again next year! 🎃
Am I here for #ToB side quests? Yes!

KT1432 Ugh omg I would have loved this lol!! now

The #ToB crew is hosting a horror pop-up in which 16 classic horror novels will be set up against one another in the usual way.

https://www.tournamentofbooks.com/welcome-to-the-horror-popup

I don‘t think I‘ll participate (too many books too little time) but I do love that tob is alive and kicking and can‘t wait for them to follow up with the #ToB26 longlist!

Ruthiella I did see this and thought it was pretty cool that it is all older titles-classics even! I probably won‘t participate either but I‘ll try to check out the commentary! 2mo
ChaoticMissAdventures Ohh that sounds fun!! 2mo
Suet624 I thought of you immediately when I saw their notice about this event. I appreciate their efforts. I‘m not someone who tends to like horror stories so I probably won‘t participate, but I‘m happy they‘re trying. 2mo

A strange collection of slightly intertwined stories of rejection, self-hatred and nihilism. It is gross, disturbing and violent at times, but I also found it quite compelling. All of the characters are somewhat addicted to the online world and their own fantasies. Not sure I could recommend it to anyone but it certainly made me think. I believe it was a Jaclyn Crupi recommendation. Also worth reading Vulture review.

Holy shit this was fucked up. Like good but also wtf. Disturbing and upsetting on multiple levels. Real unique. Recommended to travis and alex2. Died reading the group chats.

I don‘t have the emotional bandwidth to handle this one right now…Might pick-up again in the future.

BarbaraBB I didn‘t like this one either and was skimming it towards the end (edited) 7mo
Night_Reader Same, will try it again later on. 7mo

A scalpel-sharp collection that dissects failure, self-delusion, and romantic erosion with bleak precision.
Each story drags you through the ego bruises of people who crave connection but flinch from vulnerability.
It‘s funny until it‘s not—then it just hurts.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 black hearts 🖤

Reggie Oof. This sounds great. 7mo

I added all my unread books to the #ISpy overview in Storygraph. In the bingo you see the ones that fit a March prompt of which I actually read just one 🤦🏻‍♀️ I hope and expect to tick off some more books during the year!

Ruthiella We Ride Upon Sticks was fun. 7mo
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella I didn‘t read it when it was in the #ToB but one day I will! 7mo
Suet624 Again, I have no idea what you‘re doing here with the ISpy prompt but I applaud you on your many prompt-attempts. 😊 7mo

Mehso-so

In the end I‘m glad I read it but it wasn‘t a home run for me.

Ok I probably posted that last blurb about 50 pages too early. I related to and had empathy for George in his late teens early 20s. George in his late 20s early 30s is much harder to stomach 🙄

squirrelbrain He did turn into a bit of a d***, didn‘t he?! 8mo
