This #ToB longlister is very meta and I can‘t figure out how much of it is ironic. ⬆️

There are various POVs (confusing at times), one of which is a supposed submission for a Creative Writing MFA.

There‘s a lot of angsty conversation so, if you don‘t like that, don‘t bother. However, it‘s not like Rooney where there‘s no communication - here, they over-communicate in a very performative, affected way.

Weirdly, I didn‘t hate it, a soft pick.

ChaoticMissAdventures Interesting. Ever& keeps trying to get me to listen to it, but maybe it is better in physical with all the different POVs? 14h
Chelsea.Poole “Weirdly I didn‘t hate it” 😆 I have this on Libby—another shortie to knock out quickly. 14h
merelybookish Interesting! Currently reading tagged book and also wondering what it's doing that is new or necessary 13h

BarbaraBB Interesting! 13h
Hooked_on_books Good that you liked it! I still don‘t want to read it. 😂 12h
quietlycuriouskate Sounds like something I can imagine being forced to read, should I ever find myself in one of the milder circles of hell. 11h

I read the fiction part first, and now there is no way to redo and try it anew beginning with NF. I do NOT have advice (other than to say that the print does have note on copyright page in front of NF side…) I honestly had to go review my notes on Biography of X to recall if I liked it or not, maybe ‘respect and being intrigued by‘ is positive enough. As to 💭 on this one, I found it fascinating. #Nov2025 Book 108 #ToBLL26 #ToB #Library

BkClubCare I will allow CL to have her wild weird trippy experiences and allow her to tell me but I wouldn‘t want to be there. And I will probably choose to not read another Jesse Ball novel. 13h
BarbaraBB That is a very snowy road! 13h

Ugh, this short novel from the #TOB long list is BLEAK. It follows a young woman's descent into serious mental illness. (Schizophrenia is suggested.) Eventually she must choose between life on heavy meds or psychotic episodes. As a reader, we experience both. As well as the hospitalizations in between. The book is well written but it is rough going. Worth reading maybe if you want to understand that diagnosis? Otherwise, I would say skip.

merelybookish There also appears to be some online controversy about the author. (In regards to treatment of reviewers.) I didn't dig into it too much but another possible reason why this might be a good one from the longlist to skip. 1d
sarahbarnes Good to see your review of this one. It was on the list of ones I was interested in, but I may reconsider. 1d
BarbaraBB I may reconsider too! 1d

CSeydel Oh, I used to read his blog. He‘s a very interesting guy with some interesting ideas, but he can get a bit much sometimes. He tends to take online comments about him very personally, and get very intense in his replies, which is fine when you have a few hundred followers but comes off as a bit needy and neurotic when you have millions. 1d
CSeydel Here he is talking about media personalities dissing his book on BlueSky: https://freddiedeboer.substack.com/p/why-i-need-your-help-with-my-novel 1d
LeahBergen Ooph. That DOES sound bleak. 1d
squirrelbrain Yes, I was interested too initially but I saw a comment about his behaviour on GR, so moved it down my list. Your review only reinforces that. 24h
merelybookish @sarahbarnes Maybe wait and see if it makes the long list. It is a compelling piece of writing but also so depressing. 14h
merelybookish @BarbaraBB It is short, so there is that. 14h
merelybookish @CSeydel Thanks for the link! Yeah, I can't get a good read on whether he deserves the negative reviews or not. He is obnoxious and I can't quite see that the criticisms of the novel are accurate. 14h
merelybookish @LeahBergen Author says he wants to de-romanticize mental illness and I think he does a good job of that. 😬 14h
merelybookish @squirrelbrain I wouldn't make it a priority. 14h

Is this the front cover or the back? I am so conflicted about which end to start 😆 #ToBLongList26 or is it 25? Ack #ToB #MemoirVSFiction #Both!

ChaoticMissAdventures Interesting!! I listened to it on audio and she says at the beginning the physical can be read either way and I didn't really understand what that meant 3d
BkClubCare @ChaoticMissAdventures - Nothing I can find says which is the fiction or not… 😒 3d
ChaoticMissAdventures Ohh crazy the audio says for each section what is nonfiction and what is fiction. It felt like the middle was the most nonfiction. I really struggled with this, the narrator was very monotone so I had trouble paying attention 2d

BarbaraBB Intriguing 2d
sarahbarnes I started with the fiction side, but I think either way you approach it, it still works. 2d
BkClubCare @sarahbarnes - I decided strategically (LOL!) to start with fiction first. The book does have one tiny note on the nonfiction side… 2d
sarahbarnes I‘ll be interested in your take on it! 2d

I am still trying to decide if I liked this because I liked it or if the bad reviews just gave me super low expectations.
Vi is a super unlikable MC. She is listless, unambitious, rude. Floating around with no direction for no reason (her parents seem great) then she molds a man out of a blob. I got Awada Bunny vibes from this but hesitant to say that, it is not as weird and the writing is not as strong (GR commenters are mad at the comparison)👇

squirrelbrain Ha, I hope I like it too as the reviews aren‘t great! 4d
sarahbarnes I‘m sort of tempted to try this one! 4d
BarbaraBB I am kind of intrigued now! 4d
ChaoticMissAdventures @squirrelbrain @sarahbarnes @BarbaraBB I cannot guarantee it is good! The MC is insufferable, But I did keep thinking I don't know what all the hate is about I didn't hate listening to it. 4d

#TOB
Well. That is a book.
I do not believe this is a book to tackle on audio. There is a monotone to the narrator, mixed with a stream of consciousness that makes it hard to digest. This is going to be a book I have no memory reading even though this very short read took me three days - I turned it off each time my mind started to wonder
Not for me

@squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB @Deblovestoread @Bookwormjillk @Chelsea.Poole @sarahbarnes

sarahbarnes I‘m reading it right now in hard copy and I do love it, but I love all of her books and can see why it might not be for everyone. 6d
Chelsea.Poole I agree. 6d
Bookwormjillk Good to know about the audio 6d

ChaoticMissAdventures @sarahbarnes I think I would have enjoyed it more in physical form. I like her at the sentence level and there have been moments that I wanted to think about more but the audio (I think she reads it) just took something away for me. 6d
sarahbarnes I can definitely see how this one would be really not great in audio form. 6d
Deblovestoread Thanks for the audio tip. 6d
BarbaraBB Thanks for tagging! I won‘t be in a hurry to read this! 6d

Help Wanted landed on last years‘ (this year?? 2025) #ToB long list. I read it earlier this year and I was not impressed. Follows a group of employees at a big box store teaming up and forming alliances to help corporate decide who should get promoted to manager. The characters were interchangeable, all just there to make a point about low-wage jobs and how employees are set up to fail.
Anyhoo, I‘m excited to get started on the new 2026 list.

#10BeforeTheEnd Week 5

How is everyone doing??

I am glad I put enough nonfiction on here to get me through Nonfiction November! All the NF is ticked off (finishing Peepshow today) I now have some chunksters while I also look at #ToB

Anyone else feel like they are running out of steam??

Ruthiella I‘m on track at 50%. 👍 And at least two of the remaining will double up for other challenges. Dunno if I will manage all ten but at least eight. 1w
willaful Pretty much on track - DNFing one book helped. 😂 1w
sarahbarnes I‘m reading my fourth…I‘m now getting distracted by library holds and the TOB longlist! 📚 📚 📚 1w
Dilara I'm on track: I've finished 7 of the books on my list because some were unexpectedly short and/or quick reads, but also running out of steam in that my motivation has waned for 2 of the books still to be read 😚 7d

The 4 #ToB books I have already on my shelves to be read.

I have read 11 off the list. 70 is far too many for me to think on so I am going to read the ones already on my TBR and read through the list and see if anything catches my fancy. Many of them have very low reader ratings and I just don't want to waste my time.

BarbaraBB I am interested in all four of these. I am looking forward to all reviews the coming months! 1w
squirrelbrain I loved the Desai but bailed on Katabasis. I have the other two on my shelves (well, 1 on my shelf, 1 on my Kindle!) 1w

#ToB26

One of my most anticipated moments each year: the #ToB longlist. I‘ve been deep diving almost all day and I have read 11, I own 12 to be read on my shelves and am about to buy another load… please help me prevent this and tell me what book or books I should absolutely get and what books I can skip 😀

squirrelbrain I think we may be too late already! 😝 1w
rebcamuse Hats off to you! I can only handle the shortlist! I‘m excited to see a bunch of wish list reads on the LL though—so I‘m hoping they‘ll make it to the SL. Currently slogging through Headshot from #ToB25 SL 1w
See All 13 Comments
BarbaraBB @rebcamuse I get that. It will take me months if not years to finish them all but I always love their choices; so many books I‘ve never heard of and many of them better than the ones shortlisted. As Headshot for example, which I didn‘t really like. 1w
sarahbarnes I see some books on the list I‘m very intrigued by as well, and hadn‘t heard of yet! 1w
Chelsea.Poole I finally had a chance to sit down with the longlist today. I am surprised at what is missing. I had guessed Heart the Lover and Language of Limbs (which I just finished!) would make an appearance. Plenty to dig into! 1w
BarbaraBB @Chelsea.Poole I was surprised about Heart the Lover too. Maybe it‘s a bit too straightforward for the ToB. Same goes for Language of Limbs - and Slanting Towards the Sea, that I loved. 1w
Suet624 I‘m so happy that we‘ve already read some of the books because of our summer camp Litsy adventures 1w
Chelsea.Poole What will you start with from the list? I had The Correspondent queued up already, as my next read. 1w
BarbaraBB @Chelsea.Poole That one is sooo good. You‘ll love it. I am thinking of 1w
BarbaraBB @Suet624 Me too! 1w
Sparklemn I have never heard of the Tournament of Books until now. I checked out the 2026 list. Amazing! Added several titles to my wish list. Thanks for sharing! 1w
BarbaraBB @Sparklemn Their longlist is always such an inspiration to me! They‘ll shortly announce the shortlist of 16 books and these will compete against each other in March during the tournament. It‘s fun! 7d
