An intricate story about a mother/son relationship. The mother arrives uninvited in Tokyo to see her son after many years apart. He is not pleased but they reach an uneasy truce & try to find ways to get along. Both mother and son spend time apart in Tokyo & in their heads, remembering what led to the distance between them. Both feel misunderstood. But over the course of her visit, they both grow and relations between them thaw. The novel moves 👇

merelybookish back and forth between the mother and son's perspectives and shifts a lot around in time. I found it took some concentration to listen to, and expect it would be better in print. I appreciated the depth of the characters and the complexity of their relationship. But my favourite part was the setting. I enjoyed wandering through the streets of Tokyo with them. #tob 2h
sarahbarnes I‘m waiting for this one from the library. The setting is definitely a big part of what interested me. Great review. 2h

Hooked_on_books Great review! He did so much in such a slim book. If you get a chance, take a look at the print or ebook—it has pictures of Tokyo sprinkled through it. I loved their inclusion. 48m

#WinterCampLitsy

Dear #camplitsy friends! Grab your furry sleeping bag: you wanted a Winter Camp and we‘re delivering!

Once the #ToB shortlist is out, we‘ll vote for 3 books that didn‘t make it and read/discuss from mid-January.

Unfortunately our lovely Meg is under the weather and will be hibernating for now. She‘ll join us again in summer. However, Helen and I are delighted to welcome Holly @hooked_on_books to keep the campfire burning!

I‘m glad I read this so I could finish out my reading of the #NBAlonglist for fiction, but it just didn‘t work for me at all. The stories just gave me nothing to hang onto. I‘m a bit disappointed that other books I read this year weren‘t on this list and this one was.

squirrelbrain I was just looking at my NBA spreadsheet (😝) last night and wondered about reading this one, so thank you for your review! Just one to go now for me from the list, which is also on #ToB - Volume. (edited) 18h
Chelsea.Poole I am so drawn to this thanks to the cover but I read elsewhere that the stories weren‘t worthwhile so now that I see your review too I‘ll pass on this…but I would take this cover art as a print to hang on my wall 😆 14h

Enshitification is Doctorow‘s very satisfying word for what tech companies do. First, create a great product to lure and lock in users. Then, change the product to benefit businesses/advertisers at the expense of users. Then, change it again to screw the businesses and benefit shareholders. It‘s an infuriating book that‘ll make you feel like you need a forever shower, but he does include some hope at the end.

squirrelbrain I had this reserved on audio at the library but then #ToB happened so I had to send it back! 😜 3d
AlaMich But I feel like these days this word could apply to so many other things besides tech, sadly. 3d
Hooked_on_books @AlaMich He actually does get into that a little bit. And it‘s unsurprising. If one sector of business is doing something a certain way at a certain point in time, it makes sense others would as well. I know from using them for my business that FedEx is decidedly enshitified. 3d

#ToB26 long listed, but this was already on my radar. As someone who loves those stories about reclusive people living off grid I was hoping for much more of that, since our MC is doing just that—he removed himself from the world at-large after a family fight over politics on Thanksgiving 2016. The novel really takes off when his grandchildren show up at his door. A look at America in the age of MAGA and the creepy Christians-with-guns movement.

sarahbarnes You may have sold me on this one. 5d
BarbaraBB Great review. I have a copy of this one too. Looking forward to it. 5d

Bookwormjillk I‘ve been meaning to read this since it came out. Hopefully soon! 5d

The Ten Year Affair | Erin Somers
post image
Pickpick

Cora meets Sam at playgroup & thus launches the "ten year affair" that sometimes lives more in Cora"s imagination than in reality. This is well-trod territory with a millenial spin.I probably would have been more moved by this book at 35 when I too was immersed in the world of raising kids, managing careers & making a marriage work. At 52, I found it kind of exhausting. That said, I was moved in the end. And Somers makes some sly observations ?

merelybookish About book clubs, parenting culture, pandemic life, restaurants, and more. At times they kept me going more than the plot. #tob 6d
sarahbarnes Great review. I‘m on the fence about this one, but good to know it has some redeeming qualities! 6d

Ruthiella I heard this author on a podcast (“So Many Damn Books” maybe?) and was intrigued. 6d
Hooked_on_books I‘ve read this one and liked it, though I‘m just a few years behind you in age and don‘t have kids. I liked it for the, “no, the grass isn‘t always greener” quality it has. We can always question our choices but it doesn‘t mean other ones would have been better. I thought that was good food for thought. 6d
BarbaraBB Great review. I think I‘m in the same place as you are and am looking forward to it. 6d
squirrelbrain I‘m glad you liked it in the end -it didn‘t sound great from your previous comment! 6d
merelybookish @sarahbarnes You can probably skip or wait to see if it makes the long list. 6d

This #ToB longlister is very meta and I can‘t figure out how much of it is ironic. ⬆️

There are various POVs (confusing at times), one of which is a supposed submission for a Creative Writing MFA.

There‘s a lot of angsty conversation so, if you don‘t like that, don‘t bother. However, it‘s not like Rooney where there‘s no communication - here, they over-communicate in a very performative, affected way.

Weirdly, I didn‘t hate it, a soft pick.

ChaoticMissAdventures Interesting. Ever& keeps trying to get me to listen to it, but maybe it is better in physical with all the different POVs? 1w
Chelsea.Poole “Weirdly I didn‘t hate it” 😆 I have this on Libby—another shortie to knock out quickly. 1w

BarbaraBB Interesting! 1w
Hooked_on_books Good that you liked it! I still don‘t want to read it. 😂 1w
quietlycuriouskate Sounds like something I can imagine being forced to read, should I ever find myself in one of the milder circles of hell. 1w
Suet624 Yeah, nope. 1w
squirrelbrain I don‘t think it would make much difference on audio @ChaoticMissAdventures - there chapters aren‘t clearly labelled in print either. 6d
squirrelbrain I expect the ToB to be full of unusual, quirky books @merelybookish - not your usual run of the mill stuff. 🤷‍♀️ 6d
squirrelbrain @Chelsea.Poole - after all the reviews I expected not to like it all. Go on, Holly, @Hooked_on_books - you might love it! 😜 6d
Hooked_on_books Ha! Nope. Not even if it makes the tournament! 6d
sarahbarnes I‘m not NOT interested in reading this. 😆 Great review. I feel like there‘s no way I‘m going to get to all the books on the longlist I want to read! 5d

I read the fiction part first, and now there is no way to redo and try it anew beginning with NF. I do NOT have advice (other than to say that the print does have note on copyright page in front of NF side…) I honestly had to go review my notes on Biography of X to recall if I liked it or not, maybe ‘respect and being intrigued by‘ is positive enough. As to 💭 on this one, I found it fascinating. #Nov2025 Book 108 #ToBLL26 #ToB #Library

BkClubCare I will allow CL to have her wild weird trippy experiences and allow her to tell me but I wouldn‘t want to be there. And I will probably choose to not read another Jesse Ball novel. 1w

Ugh, this short novel from the #TOB long list is BLEAK. It follows a young woman's descent into serious mental illness. (Schizophrenia is suggested.) Eventually she must choose between life on heavy meds or psychotic episodes. As a reader, we experience both. As well as the hospitalizations in between. The book is well written but it is rough going. Worth reading maybe if you want to understand that diagnosis? Otherwise, I would say skip.

merelybookish There also appears to be some online controversy about the author. (In regards to treatment of reviewers.) I didn't dig into it too much but another possible reason why this might be a good one from the longlist to skip. 1w
sarahbarnes Good to see your review of this one. It was on the list of ones I was interested in, but I may reconsider. 1w
BarbaraBB I may reconsider too! 1w

CSeydel Oh, I used to read his blog. He‘s a very interesting guy with some interesting ideas, but he can get a bit much sometimes. He tends to take online comments about him very personally, and get very intense in his replies, which is fine when you have a few hundred followers but comes off as a bit needy and neurotic when you have millions. 1w
CSeydel Here he is talking about media personalities dissing his book on BlueSky: https://freddiedeboer.substack.com/p/why-i-need-your-help-with-my-novel 1w
LeahBergen Ooph. That DOES sound bleak. 1w
squirrelbrain Yes, I was interested too initially but I saw a comment about his behaviour on GR, so moved it down my list. Your review only reinforces that. 1w
merelybookish @sarahbarnes Maybe wait and see if it makes the long list. It is a compelling piece of writing but also so depressing. 1w
merelybookish @BarbaraBB It is short, so there is that. 1w
merelybookish @CSeydel Thanks for the link! Yeah, I can't get a good read on whether he deserves the negative reviews or not. He is obnoxious and I can't quite see that the criticisms of the novel are accurate. 1w
merelybookish @LeahBergen Author says he wants to de-romanticize mental illness and I think he does a good job of that. 😬 1w
merelybookish @squirrelbrain I wouldn't make it a priority. 1w

Is this the front cover or the back? I am so conflicted about which end to start 😆 #ToBLongList26 or is it 25? Ack #ToB #MemoirVSFiction #Both!

ChaoticMissAdventures Interesting!! I listened to it on audio and she says at the beginning the physical can be read either way and I didn't really understand what that meant 1w
BkClubCare @ChaoticMissAdventures - Nothing I can find says which is the fiction or not… 😒 1w
ChaoticMissAdventures Ohh crazy the audio says for each section what is nonfiction and what is fiction. It felt like the middle was the most nonfiction. I really struggled with this, the narrator was very monotone so I had trouble paying attention 1w

BarbaraBB Intriguing 1w
sarahbarnes I started with the fiction side, but I think either way you approach it, it still works. 1w
BkClubCare @sarahbarnes - I decided strategically (LOL!) to start with fiction first. The book does have one tiny note on the nonfiction side… 1w
sarahbarnes I‘ll be interested in your take on it! 1w
